The Resties haven't been the biggest fans of the extraction shooter genre, mostly due to its intense demands on our gaming time. But Escape from Duckov knows how to adapt the genre for the elder gamer: make the campaign single player and replace the military dudes with adorable ducks. We also chat about Lumines Arise, the Tetris Effect-ification of a beloved PSP-era franchise.

Stuff discussed:

Escape from Duckov

Lumines Arise

Hard Boiled 4K Blu-ray (also streaming on Criterion Channel!)

Angel Dust - 1994 on Archive.org

As someone on the outside of the Vast majority of Shooter games, the evolution of the Extraction subgenre has been fascinating to watch. It feels like someone has an agenda to make this genre the next Battle Royale. It feels like it’s come about the opposite way. Where pubg blew up of nowhere and then Fortnite succeeded so much after it, it felt like it warped the industry around it. Suddenly everyone was taking a shot at a battle royale or making a game mode of it to where it hit oversaturation faster than companies could be ready for and pivot away from. But Extraction feels like it’s being “forced” for lack of a better term. There was the extraction mode in The Division that seemed to do well enough, but then Rainbow Six extraction didn’t seem well received. More came out but they’d get compared to Escape from Tarkov which I’ve caught onto as the gold standard thus far but I’ve never caught gameplay of it the way I’ve been subjected to other big shooter game modes. That’s until Arc Raiders which finally seems to be THE big hit of the genre. Maybe I’m ignorant but it’s wild to me that a specific genre would get so many “chances” in an industry where other genres and even beloved IPs are at risk of getting permanently shelved after 1 shot because they don’t make oodles of money or blow critics out of the water. Compare say Astro Bot, if it wasn’t Game of the Year level quality how many more shots would that studio have been given to try again before the higher ups say “eh, do something else, let Nintendo keep their monopoly on good 3D platformers”? Would it inspire other studios to go “oh I think we can succeed where this one didn’t quite work out?” Maybe it’s the wrong comparison as “Shooter” is a more stable overall genre to experiment in but it fascinates me how reversed the past two “big” game modes in shooters were in comparison to me.

Man, I've been smoking weed everyday for 20+ years and hearing you guys talk about weed games makes me laugh. You guys sound like parents who used to smoke, then started again and are now trying to sound "hip". One love to you guys. If you ever need a contact high then reach out lmao

Any plans to check out Arc Raiders? It's a new extraction shooter that launched a couple weeks ago. It's been a lot of fun and has gotten pretty good reviews. They seemed to put a lot of thought into what they wanted to do with the genre instead of just making a Tarkov clone (like Arena Breakout did). I think it's a much more accessible entry to the genre and it's been fun meeting a lot of players in game who are new to extraction shooters. It's also made for a much more pleasant multiplayer experience. People will stop and talk and help with quests instead of just head, eyes -ing you before you even see them. I have like 500 hours in Tarkov (low by that game's standards) so I've been excited to see the genre expand. Hope to hear your thoughts on it some time!

Wow, the archive.org tip was incredible! I have been looking for Yoji Yamada's The Twilight Samurai for a long, long time. And just like that, I've found it!

What was the name of the egg game on itch?

I used to own Lumines on PSP and never once played it. In fact I never intended to, because you could use the Lumines UMD to downgrade and then jailbreak the PSP, which is the only reason teen me ever bought it lol. I'll have to give the new one a try though because I do love Tetris Effect.

Just want to note that PEAK had another major update last week with the addition of the new Roots biome. This game just gets better and better, and it's been a joy coming back to it regularly for new content or to introduce new players to it. It's genuinely my #3 GOTY.

I’ve never heard of Escape from Tarkov. I don’t really know what an extraction shooter is. Ok. Just did a little google. Never heard of any of these games. I read vg blogs. I follow vg podcasts. I spend an embarrassing amount of time weekly on switch2 and ps5. I feel like there’s a whole secret world the video game landscape hidden from me. Like when my student first told me about Roblox.

Completely agree on the Mario bros being a go to Halloween costume and bonus bring the theme for a family costume.

Was there mention of a Lumines demo? Maybe I misheard but not finding it linked out or when searching Steam.

Really hope they add controller/deck support, have never played an extraction shooter and don’t usually go for multiplayer so this sounds insanely compelling

Catching up from the previous Resties where you talked about fav magazines, I wanted to share a link to forgottenworlds.net. It's a fan magazine about... old video game magazines. They're limited run, and I've only bought the last one (The Sega issue), but what a trip. Has lots of high quality scans of old magazine covers, review pages, etc.., and even some interviews with industry folks. I encourage anyone to give it a look to see what this person is about! For what it's worth, I chased EVERY PIECE OF NEWS THERE WAS ABOUT THE 3D SONIC GAME FOR THE SEGA SATURN. I'm still waiting for it's official release.
