Do you ever wish you could escape from all the stresses on Planet Earth? For this Besties Battle Bracket, the four best friends determine the best hub world. You're familiar with these spaces, typically the central starting point of an adventure. From the hub world, new stages and realms branch outward. Hub worlds are often safe, comforting reprieves from the thrills of fighting evil and saving the world. Or in the case of Dark Souls, they're practically on top of a graveyard.

But we'll say no more, for fear of spoiling this important and serious bracket!

Rubric:

Better amenities?

Compelling neighbors?

Where would you rather retire?

ROUND 1:

Super Mario 64 - Peach’s Castle

Sonic Adventure - Station Square

Astro Bot - Crash Site

Splatoon - Inkopolis

Assassins Creed 2 - Ezio’s Villa Auditore

Metal Gear Solid 5 - Mother Base

Dark Souls - Firelink Shrine

Bloodborne - The Hunter’s Dream

Mass Effect 2 - The Normandy

Destiny - The Tower

Hades - House of Hades

Fire Emblem Three Houses - Garreg Mach Monastery

Kirby and the Forgotten Realm - Waddledee Town

Persona 4 - Inaba

Sega Genesis Classics - Childhood Bedroom

Majora’s Mask - Clocktown

A bit of a bummer none of the Lego games made it on the list. Like the OG Star Wars with the diner was a lot of fun!

Thomas Barker

I’m so excited for this one! I have such a soft spot for a good hub world, it’s one of my favorite things in gaming

billfromamerica

I really liked the Milano in Guardians of the Galaxy!

Jordan

No one mentioned the elephant in the room with The Hunter’s Dream, where German heavily implies in dialogue that you can have relations with the doll. The ultimate amenity.

dummy bunny

You missed an excellent opportunity to say "your bum is on the rail" when talking about pooping off the side of mother base

Jesse Edwards

Personally, I think Majula from Dark Souls II blows firelink shrine out of the water on all 3 parts of the rubric.

zach winstead

Who else compulsively trues to stnc with Russ during his "My name is Russ Frushtick and I know the best game of the WEeeek"

Dean Wright

Griffin: “I want to be objective and not talk about which is better to live in.” Immediately talks about what it’s like to live there.

Will

Surprised Deep Rock Galactic wasn't on the list

Benjamin Heasly

Peach's castle may not be up to code, but it's certainly up to toad...FWIW.

Dave Stern

I like how Firelink Shrine got dinged for “there’s a murderer there” and Inaba completely skates on the fact that there are murders there which is the whole concept of the game. Music absolutely slaps though, no argument there.

BassToad

Normandy Wins because Grunt is there. Mordin is also there and he sings his cool Major Modern General song

Geoff N

"Motherbase can't blow up a dream" is the quote of the year so far.

Will Gosson

These guys did not take into account the Moon Presence in the Hunter's Dream

Jesse K

Right off the bat, can’t believe no one brought up that Mario is a plumber and is constantly going into sewer pipes. There are almost too many toilets if anything!

Idea for select future episodes (not a comment specifically about this episode): for some of these bigger bracket episodes, you could do an award-show style (ala Giant Bomb) structure where you have multiple categories with nominations for each round, and then finish up with choosing best overall ___, pitting the winners of each category up against one another. For example, "Best City" could have rounds such as Best Food (eg Persona 5), Best Architecture (e.g. Imperial City, Baldur's gate, etc.) , Best Vacation Spot (e.g. Delfino Plaza, New Donk City), Best Nightlife (e.g. Midgar, ME Citadel) and then use the winners at the end to crown the best city overall. Just a thought to break the structure up a little bit, as the true bracket doesn't always do a great job at encompassing variation. Although, the downside would be less hilarious rubric shenanigans

Patrick Young

My favourite hub world is the psychonauts summer camp, just a very iconic and nostalgic (weirdly even for me who never had a summer camp experience) place

William Vernia

Insane Isle Delphino snub, easily clears Peach’s castle in all rubric categories

MetaRidleyScott

No love for Phantasy Star Online’s Pioneer 2? You could shop there, you could heal yourself, you had a bank and that’s where you would hang out with your friends and dupe spread needles.

Peter Smith

Want to shout out Diddy Kong Racing!

Dirch Frode

Correct answer is actually hotel krat

Clay

I won't stand for this Bloodborne Messenger slander, those are just little guys who like to dress up and deliver messages, they've never done anything bad!

Zachary Martel

In my most parental voice... I'm not mad, just disappointed that we did a whole hub world episode and no mention of Monster Hunter.

Theresa

Skyhold from Dragon Age Inquisition should have been the Bioware rep, not the Normandy

Victor Hart

Having the castle from Mario 64 over Isle Delfino from Sunshine is absolutely insane.

Cardinal27

I will not stand for the absolute disrespect on my buddies the messengers. They play dress up and are there for you at every step to offer you trick saws and blood sundries! For shame, Besties.

ThanaThots

Fire Emblem got by a lot on how long ago they played it. They forgot that it’s ruled by a pretty zealous religion that send kids out to kill people they consider heretics. It also eventually gets razed to the ground by an attacking army, not the best place for retirement!

Jay

I think russ might need to retire from rubric duty😭 When he said he couldnt make a rubric if it didnt consider what it would be like in real life everything clicked for me. I wish there was more discussion of how the hubworld functioned as a gameplay element, which had better aesthetics, which had better interactive elements, etc.

Sarah Cox

A Hat in Time’s hub world is probably my favorite.
