How many hours do you guys feel like is TOO many hours to put into a game? Sometimes a game gets its hooks into me so strongly I can hardly think about playing anything else, especially with roguelikes/lites (think Russ with Binding of Isaac). Do you ever feel like you’re playing one game too often, logging dozens of hours, to the detriment and neglect of others? What do you do if you feel that way?

Thomas Walsh

Is anyone in the industry/regulatory space doing anything about gambling/psuedo-gambling in video games? I hear a lot of outrage about AI in game development but gacha-style monetization seems to be ever more normalized.

Peter Graham

Why do you think that the quippy, “Whedon-esque,” style writing is SO ever present, particularly in AAA and big fantasy titles? I’m pretty allergic to it and it’s almost an immediate deal breaker, and I just don’t get why every character needs to be “clever” in that specific way. Is it the marvel-ficatuon that just won’t die? Is it just a YA fantasy trope that’s commonly appealing to the types of people who write videogames for a living? Basically why can’t more fiction just take itself seriously or find humor in other places at least.

How many years away from a really seamless light easy system like a ps portal with cloud streaming that works, battery life etc where it becomes as easy as a game on your phone

We all know the story: Nintendo added swimming mechanics to a shooter, and created the best team FPS of all time: Splatoon (my beloved). But Splat 2 and 3 mainly added quality of life enhancements. What will or should Nintendo add to really set Splatoon 4 apart?

Clair Ma

I don't know if this is too specific, but I'm curious if you guys would ever do a dive into the weird obscure old/indie games, maybe from a video game history lens? I'm thinking a bit of like, old free browser text adventure games like Photopia, or the Flash games from sites like Kongregate or Miniclip (e.g. point and click adventures or Nitrome games). This was sparked by anticipation to hearing Plante's thoughts on Pathologic 3, since I figure the original game kind of has a similar vibe. Thanks, love the show

Joel Castelli

I'd love to hear an episode on gaming with kids! Every parent has strong opinions on this. Some believe screen time is evil, others have their kids gaming with them at 6 months. I think most folks fall in between. Aside from the typical fare like Kirby and Mario, my 5yo loves games like Donut County, Rekt, and Untitled Goose Game on switch. What are some of the lesser known indie titles that surprisingly resonate with kids?

Cameron Dickerson

Short & sweet: How many games are in your steam libraries?

AJ

I know you have talked about games for kids before, but I’m curious about games for kids that don’t require much reading. My daughter is playing the new Bluey game, which is very 5-year-old friendly, except it has a lot of dialogue. Are there games for little kids that you’d recommend that don’t require a ton of reading to know what to do? We play a lot of Kirby, Princess Peach Showtime, and Mario Wonder, which are all ok, but the reading challenge always hits at some point!

Alice

How you poopin these days?

Morgan McNamara

Would either of you ever think about streaming games like Griffin and Justin do? Also what are some good co-op games to play on the couch with someone? I want to play games with my spouse, but it feels like there’s not a lot of not online options (other than the obvious Minecraft and stardew valley).

Nick Bernstein

What are your feelings on Rom hacks? Do you have any favorites? I hadn’t enjoyed a Pokemon game in years but recently played Pokemon unbound and Pokemon odyssey which were wonderful.

Erick Gappa

I really prefer to play games on a large TV, so I mostly use a Xbox series X. But I've been thinking I want one of those new Steam Machines, if the price is manageable. With the news of the delay, do you think they come out this year? Do they cost less than $800?

Spughetti

Any chance the Resties make a guest appearance on the McElroy Entertainment System? No preference on game, but I'd love to be able to see the Besties game together!

toucanpete

Are there any plans to include video with the podcast? And do you have any new workout games? Aka games you play while you are on a bike?

Ethan Smith

With the way Nintendo has started pricing their switch two games- is there a way that we as consumers can make it known that we aren’t happy with this pricing change? And how do we do that when it seems like the general consumer continues to pony up the dough?

Paul Coffee

Guitar Hero was a very good party game. Meeting up with people to pass the guitar around and play songs was the best. Rock Band made things even more party-game-ish, but that genre isnt exactly a staple at everyone's parties anymore. Do you think there could/will ever be a musical rhythm type party game like that again. Something people want to do in person with eachother.

Kyle Lambert

What are the Resties’ feelings on LEGO games? The only time I’ve heard them come up on the main show was Justin saying he didn’t like them, is that a common sentiment? FWIW my 4yo and I finally moved on from Luigi’s Mansion 3 onto LEGO Marvel Superheroes and it’s been a blast.

Kevin Malantic

We need more Travis. When one of you guys are out, which seems to happen a lot during the winter holidays, could we have more Travis filling in? How about Ron Funches? Can we have them on the Resties too? Also New York Giraffe. Can we please have more New York Giraffe? I mean, unless he's driving an Uber or something and is too busy.

That one guy from that one movie

Steam Machine Bets.🎰 Will it be successful? Price point predictions? What would YOU do if you're valve to market it to a core demo?

The Olympics are upon us once again, and I for one have Olympic fever! Do the Resties enjoy the Olympics? Do you remember ever playing an Olympics video game that wasn't complete garbage? For my part, I enjoyed Olympic Decathlon (which was confusingly originally Microsoft Decathlon but ported to the Apple II) as a little kid in the early 80's, but I also had very few games available to me at the time ...

Alex T. Rex

Why are there so many McElroy's and how many different projects do they have collectively. Who is the mysterious 3rd brother for those of us who only listen to Besties?

Svaldbardseedvault

Do you think the new steam machine is going to be as big a deal as I think it is (I think it is a big deal)? Are we finally reaching a point where consoles are irrelevant, and games are truly platform agnostic, and anyone can play a game in their living room, move to their desktop pc, and take their portable handheld on a plane, all using the same cloud save and only paying for the game once? I’m psyched.

PoohGhoulBear

If besties competed against triple click in an Olympic format of Rocket League, Diablo, and Tower Fall, who would win?

SlimLeaper

Now that it’s 2026, are there any plans to update the required reading list? We’re due a 2021-2025 episode!

I'm going to be visiting Brooklyn for a wedding in March what should i do while I'm there? Context I live in a small town in Nevada

I'm always curious if people have the same experience I do: I know I will enjoy a game but I don't want to start it because it's a lot of mental energy to get through the opening and learn a new game and get to the point where I am into it (single player games, too). Do you experience this?

Walker Weber

Recently my friend asked me this question. What is the first single player video game you remember finishing. I had older siblings so much of my early gaming was playing with and watching them but I still remember when I beat my first game by myself

Donnie H

How do you feel about games that are more like art pieces? I picked up Mini Mini Golf Golf and it's a wild ride!

G-Walle

Do you guys have any knowledge of education and gaming like if there's any company out there trying to combined great education and fun gaming into something that makes educating kids easier?

Will Candler

Who is the best Megaman Robot Master? (choose one for the main series and for Megaman X too!)

LizardWizard

As someone who’s super stoked for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, who are you most excited to have on your island?

Jon Gill

Shamelessly copying this one over from last time, since I posted it months late: We know that Griffin is a fan of the Devil's Plan and Physical 100, but have any of you had the opportunity to explore further into the wonderful world of Korean reality television? There are some fantastic shows out there, many of which were created by the same creator as Devil's Plan, the masterful Jung Jong-yeon. One of his best shows is Crime Scene, a social deduction murder mystery show so good that its Chinese adaptation spawned a multi-billion dollar of industry of "jubensha" LARP parlors. And then there's The Genius. The Genius is the original "brain survival" game, where players compete in a variety of elaborate and political board games over the course of the season, and it literally changed how I think about game design forever. The Genius shares about 90% of its DNA with Devil's Plan, so if you're a fan of Devil's Plan, I can't recommend going back and watching The Genius highly enough. English fansubs of both shows are easily acquired online. The latest season of Crime Scene is also available on Netflix as Crime Scene Zero and makes a great entry point into the franchise. (Equally shameless self-promotion that you should feel free to cut from the pod: I run an annual "live reality game" called Genius Northwest, inspired by The Genius, Devil's Plan, and similar survival games. Each year we rent out a mansion in western Washington and invite 10 players to compete in a three-day "season" of games, politics, and puzzles. If any Besties hosts or fans are interested in applying, we'd love to have you! Check out https://geniusnw.com/ for more details.)

With the flood on games coming out month after month, and only increasing (shout-out to Post Games's coverage of this topic), do you feel there are any games of the past that you feel like had unique gameplay that would feel fresh and new if brought into the modern era? For example, Trap Gunner on the PS1 had a really fun 1v1 spy vs spy gameplay that i feel would shine with a modern redesign, as it was held back by the limitations of the ps1. Thank you!

Shmueli Berdugo

What is a good entry point for a 5 year old kid. So far we’ve tried Putt Putt games and Mario cart with assist but most platform games are too hard (even games like Kirby and Yoshi’s crafted world).

greaves

I’m about the same age as you guys and I know, personally, that in the late 90s I was absolutely in the GRIPS of my first MMO obsession that went by the name ‘NETSTORM’. Did you guys ever dip a toe or, perhaps, more than that? There’s apparently a modern remake on the horizon from some members of the original team so it’s been on my mind again for the first time in years. Big love from Australia x

The Legend of Zelda turns 40 on February 21st! Any reflections on how this series has shaped video games/game culture for the last 4 decades? What are the Besties’ favorites?

Tess

Factorio is great but have you played TImberborn?! If so, what are your thoughts? If not, check it out..cause beavers.

Ferreeeeeence

As a fan of Monster Factory, and sometimes monster creator myself, I'm curious how many of you get silly with character creators in your personal playtime. Is there something that stops you from it, or a certain breaking point where you go bog standard character?

Ryan Alexander

Hey guys, I’ve been listening to your show for many years now, I love the Resties and the besties and I look forward to every bit of content you two are connected to. I’m curious about your thoughts on video Game composers/compositions- a recurring theme is for you guys to mention how incredible a soundtrack is, which has provided so much incredible working music for me- but, what do you look for in a video game composition? If this isn’t already on the docket for a bracket battle, I’d love to hear more in depth about your favorites. Thank you for so much thoughtful, well researched, funny, and kind content. Best wishes -Ryan

I know sports games (other than golf and racing) are not necessarily in the Besties game lists on a week to week basis but I have a good one for you. It's called Tape to Tape. It's a run based hockey game that reminds me of NBA jam more than anything else. Have any of you laced up your skates and checked this game out and bracket battle best sports based side quests in games? You guys are great and thanks for all of the awesome content.

David Miller

Hey guys. I don't know for sure whether this has been brought up any recent episode or not, but would anyone mind just commenting their thoughts regarding CO33 having the GOTY award stripped due to sneaky AI stuff? I personally feel very fine saying yes let's absolutely draw a hard line in the sand now to discourage the use of gen AI in the vid game industry, but that being said I'm open to whether my view is too harsh or unfair towards smaller devs or if anyone has an argument for why it should be used but only as a tool to jump start a narrative idea etc etc. Just wondering what everyone's take on it was

I'm a couple weeks behind so maybe I missed it but I'm curious if Chris in particular has seen Obex yet. I was able to catch it in theaters and it feels very...Chris. I loved it personally

Question around Mewgenics, the representation of disabilities in the game is dismissive and problematic, will you please reference how unacceptable it is when discussing the game? autism (among others) isn’t a gameplay mechanic

Luc Gallant

When the new Witcher game comes out will you guys get the Mitcher on a guest again? Remember the Mitcher? He was my favorite of Russ’s eccentric friends.
