Ah, the day some parts of social media screamed with theories, and would continue the screaming for two years..... :) [SEE NUMBERED POSTS ABOVE] Note: There is a minisode between Seasons 2 and 3 but it's not necessary. Only if you want to find it. You can put it in front of 3x1.

My Reel Reaction impression/impersonation: "This aired in 2012. But with AI agents going rogue in 2026, could that imaginary code actually exist today? How would Moffat and Gatiss do this today? What if Moriarty could control AI? Let me know in the Comments!" LOLOLOLOL

(4 of 4) 4. The Homeless Network StagingThis theory focused on the crowd's unnaturally fast reaction to the fall. The Theory: The entire crowd that swarmed the body, the "doctors" who rushed out of the hospital, and the cyclist who hit John were all members of Sherlock’s Homeless Network. [1] (https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/shortcuts/2012/jan/16/sherlocks-death-your-theories), [2] (https://www.quora.com/How-did-Sherlock-actually-fake-his-death-in-the-series-It-was-shown-in-2-ways-Which-was-the-actual-one)The Execution: Their job was to flood the scene instantly to block John’s view, apply fake blood, and physically pull John away before he could get a clear, coherent look at the body. [1] (https://www.quora.com/How-did-Sherlock-actually-fake-his-death-in-the-series-It-was-shown-in-2-ways-Which-was-the-actual-one), [2] (https://asherlockstudy.tumblr.com/post/154789432720/sherlock-reichenbach-fall)5. The Psychotropic Drug (The Baskerville Theory)The Theory: Pulling from the previous episode, "The Hounds of Baskerville," some fans hypothesized that Sherlock used a modified version of the hallucinogenic gas on John. The drug would make John highly suggestible, causing him to project his worst fear—Sherlock dying—onto whatever actually happened when Sherlock jumped.

(3 of 4) 3. The Bungee Cord and Mask (The "Anderson" Theory)This theory was so widespread that the show explicitly filmed it as a comedic sequence in Season 3. [1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Reichenbach_Fall), [2] (https://screenrant.com/sherlock-show-reichenbach-fall-death-survive-explained-theories/)The Theory: Sherlock jumps from the roof attached to a bungee cord, bounces back up, and crashes through a window into the hospital. The Twist: Meanwhile, Jim Moriarty’s corpse is fitted with a hyper-realistic Sherlock mask and thrown to the pavement. To make sure John believes it, the famous British illusionist Derren Brown is hired to hypnotize John the moment he gets knocked over by the cyclist.

(2 of 4) 2. The Squash Ball / Pulse TrickFans noticed Sherlock aggressively bouncing a small rubber ball earlier in the episode while waiting at St. Bart's Hospital. [1] (https://www.buzzfeed.com/danmartin/the-9-best-theories-about-how-sherlock-faked-his-death)The Theory: This was a nod to a classic magician's trick. If you squeeze a squash ball tight under your armpit, it temporarily constricts the radial artery and cuts off the pulse in your wrist. The Use: Sherlock used this to fool John into thinking he was dead when John rushed over to check his wrist for a pulse. (1 of 4) FROM AI (SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR NEXT EPISODE AHEAD): During the two-year hiatus between Season 2 and Season 3 of BBC's Sherlock, fans dissected the final scene frame-by-frame. When the series returned, showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss directly parodied and incorporated these real-world theories into the premiere episode, "The Empty Hearse," through a fan club run by Philip Anderson. [1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Reichenbach_Fall), [2] (https://www.pastemagazine.com/tv/bbc/sherlock-bbc-season-2-season-3-death-explained-problems-spoilers-streaming-legacy), [3] (https://screenrant.com/sherlock-show-reichenbach-fall-death-survive-explained-theories/)The most prominent fan theories regarding how Sherlock faked his death include:1. The Laundry Truck / Dumpster TheoryThis was the most popular and geographically supported theory immediately following the finale. [1] (https://www.pastemagazine.com/tv/bbc/sherlock-bbc-season-2-season-3-death-explained-problems-spoilers-streaming-legacy)The Theory: Right before Sherlock jumps, a laundry truck filled with bags pulls up directly underneath his trajectory. Sherlock lands in the soft bedding to break his fall. [1] (https://www.pastemagazine.com/tv/bbc/sherlock-bbc-season-2-season-3-death-explained-problems-spoilers-streaming-legacy), [2] (https://www.buzzfeed.com/danmartin/the-9-best-theories-about-how-sherlock-faked-his-death)The Swap: As a cyclist intentionally knocks John Watson down to disorient him, Sherlock leaps out of the truck, and a body double (provided by Molly Hooper from the morgue) is placed on the pavement covered in fake blood. The truck then immediately drives away.
