King Arthur and Dracula have more in common than one might imagine. Both are, in name, born sons of the dragon.
In 1431 Sigismund of Luxembourg, the Holy Roman Emperor at the time, made Vlad II a knight of The Order of the Dragon. He then became know as Vlad Dracul, meaning Vlad the Dragon. When his son Vlad III was born, he later became known as Dracula, meaning Son of the Dragon, or Son of the Devil.
King Arthur's father was Uther Pendragon, whose surname name meant Chief-Dragon or Head-Dragon. In some legends Uther adopts the epithet after seeing a dragon-shaped comet in the sky. His son Arthur is sometimes referred to as Dragon's Child.
It made sense, at least to my brother Adam and I, that Dracula and King Arthur would have to do battle one day. The parallels would eventually lead them one another. And perhaps, in an alternate universe, if things had gone differently, they could have formed an alliance of understanding. Both born in the fire of their times. Both destined to lead.
