I finally hit a wall with the sketch book. It took longer than I thought it would, but my unfamiliarity with traditional mediums started getting to me when I tried to do the hand studies I talked about.

It almost feels like I don't know how to work within the confines of the paper, and my lines are so unsure compared to what I can do with a tablet. It should feel the same, right? Some of it does, but the control I usually feel with figure drawing is gone. I never had much to begin with, I am still learning after all, but to start over like this can be very humbling when you thought you knew more than you really do.

But maybe I needed this. To take that discouragement and turn it into something else. So yesterday I decided to try to apply some of what I've learned from keeping the sketch book and use it in my digital figure drawings. It helped me gain back some of the confidence I've lost, and while I am taking a small break from the sketch book, I will keep experimenting with trying to mimic that traditional look of figure drawings in photoshop like I do with my paintings. Then once I go back, maybe I can take some of what I learned with me. It is all about finding the good within the bad, and figuring out a way around these mental blocks.

Side note! I have looked at a lot of Kevin Chen's and E.M. Gist's figure drawings for inspiration lately, as they both have a style I really like. Thought I would share links to some of their work. I also attached the full figure drawing that I used in the banner below!

digital and traditional is so so different! i didn't realise how different until i tried to do the same thing traditionally as i did digitally and it.... didn't turn out well, but also vise versa. it's so odd! i guess how we don't look at our hands when we draw digitally? (unless you're on a screen drawing tablet) where traditionally you can see your hand and the whole picture. you can't zoom in, you can't delete or make easy colour changes, it takes a lot to get used to. but i saw your hand sketches and they're so good!!! honestly, keep going i can't even imagine how good you're gonna get :D <3

It really is!? I think that was part of why I avoided doing traditional for so long, because I knew how unstable my confidence can be when confronted with so many of my fears all at once. But it was a good reminder of just far I have to go still, and that it can be motivating rather than daunting. The last thing I want for myself is to become complacent. YOU ARE SO ENCOURAGING, AND I LOVE YOU!!! ❤︎ ❤︎ ❤︎

totally i get you!!! it's horrible when you have high hopes for something traditional and it.... just doesn't work, or doesn't work as you'd hoped, but it's all part of the learning process! maybe try some 10 minute doodle tasks? pick a bunch of things and draw them in 10 minutes then move on, doesn't matter how messy or bad it is, but it might help you get used to pencil movements and working in traditional :D I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3333

Yeah! I try to keep a lot of my drawings in the sketch book to 10 minutes or less, but I might do it a little differently just to change things up. Or maybe I should just do some shading exercises??! I will have to mess around with it. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
