I would say the king is very prideful and cruel, just like other human kings have been in the past. Wouldn't necessarily say that he is mad, as he seems to be extremely intelligent and does things with either logic or just pride. One reason why is think "the cute little white haired girl" is soo nice to him is because he is the king...usually citizens are very respectful to their leader 😅

The interaction between the king and the nameless girl is one of my fav scenes in Hunter x Hunter. There is just something very odd and beautiful having the cruel, extremely strong, intelligent and prideful king interact with a cute little weak girl who is always very polite and grateful.
