The message that the story depicts is neither singular nor simplistic. In this arc Togashi has presented us a very nuanced and multi-faceted perspective of the human race and its nature. Some of the beautiful ideas that I got from these episodes: - The depiction of more human like emotions by the Chimera ants as the arc progressed. You see the King show affection and care for Komugi, Youpi gain a sense of respect for his opponents, the royal guards learning the affection and role of a mother after they sacrifice themselves for the King's well being. The author mentions that the royal guards have alleviated to the queen/mother's level as their sacrifice is analogous to how a mother sacrifices her body, time and effort in raising their children. Also note that all of these are positive emotions...the kind of emotions that you'd consider attributed of any good human - Battle between specices: While Meruem was a lot stronger than Netero in terms of strength and just Nen ability...there was no match between what the new Chimera ant species have achieved compared to the feats that thousand year old human race has achieved...one prime example based on just technology being: the rose. The King was always in checkmate as Netero had planned to use this bomb if things didn't work out. Netero was only playing around and enjoying himself until the end...as he knew he will win anyhow. Also note the specific emphasis on the bomb being low budget and popular among small dictatorships. it basically means that this is not even the prime or the best technology that the humans have...we as a race have advanced way further! Netero: "I'm not alone...the human race has infinite potential for evolution as well" - As mentioned in this episode, human race is not as noble and morally right as we think....specifically citing the use of these mass destruction bombs and how all nations don't want to negotiate on a peace treaty - The author mentions "how are ants and humans different?". Don't we humans (at least most of us) eat animals species. Then how are we different from the ants, who see humans as a source of food. Yes many ants have shown inclination towards being evil, malicious and inclined towards making Chimera ants the prominent species of the planet....but we humans have done the same. - Morality of Gon: Remember when Gon and Killua were captured by Chrollo and the Phantom troupe and then Gon asks the following from Chrollo: "How can you kill someone who has nothing to do with you?"And look at Gon this episode…he says to Pitou something like: "If you delay any further, I’ll kill her (Komugi)". The irony! Another thing that I personally disliked is his treatment of Killua as a friend. There are many instances in this anime where you have been shown that Gon has not always been morally right, but it is just the case that his negative side is being amplified in this situation. Will share a very good video directing Gon’s character and his morality, once you finish the series. - Togashi’s work has been heavily influenced by the 2nd world war, the atomic bomb, and the worst of the humanity that war brings out. You can draw many parallels. These are just some of the ideas that I can think of that Togashi has presented. A few more beautiful episodes coming up as we wrap up this arc, you are gonna "enjoy" them! (Note my quotations :P)
