I feel calling it a buttpull is a very superficial reading of it. It fits with the themes and the characters and isn't done solely for the purpose of fan service. You may not agree with the narrative choice but it wasn't lazy.

Regardless of how it's percieved, the story couldn't have continued without it. I personally think this could've been an effective ending, but he made sure to throw in "Pain isn't the leader, sasuke is still lost" so this was never going to be the ending

One of the best episodes. Still one of my fav animes, but I've always felt Naruto suffered from not showing basic village people after the land of waves arc. They show them here and there when Jiraiya travels too, but it feels less integrated with the ninja world. Essentially being a ninja is like an occupation/ life course similar to being a Ramen chef. In the beginning it kind of shows that the ninja are like military for a village/nation at high levels and glorified private contractors at low levels. When we stop seeing basic citizens, the idea that ninja are protecting and defending sort of goes away and it starts to just feel like senseless beef between a bunch of people with powers lol. I mean technically some of our main cast may have non ninja parents like Sakura. If they even threw a simple scene in where she's worried her non ninja mom, who cant protect herself, might die in a village attack, it would feel so much more grounded. Note: I just looked it up and i guess they are non cannon ninja.... but I always thought her parents ran that flower shop from part one haha. Even though most of the people we see in the crowd this episode are still ninja its great to see basic towns people mixed in. It really makes the world feel a little more fleshed out again. Also I have no idea why more shows don't recycle flashbacks but with different people remembering it differently than before. So smart. Kept the same sequences and everything from a budget standpoint.
