to be fair, the leaf has numbers. the hyuga, ino-shika-cho and all their clans, the leaf's anbu and foundation, shino's bug clan, most of these dudes would probably be enough for the reguar-shmegular uchiha's.

I"m sure none of us would not have done what Itachi did but that's why he is the most unrelatable character in the show. He did his best to just see things black and white and he was 100% confident what would happen if the coupe happened, another war. He chose to protect the most amount of innocent lives. He is more AI than human but his decisions definitely make sense given his thought process. But that's his story, anbu black ops since he was a child, murdering people like nothing, forced to think and act as logically as possible, not being able to with sasuke.

I know the coupe doesn't seem like a big deal because itachi killed them so easily but that's gotta be some "he snuck them" plot hole type shit. The entire uchiha clan going to war against the leaf while other nations try to take advantage literally sounds almost as bad as whats going on right now

The worry wasnt that the Uchiha couldn't beat the village, it was that it would trigger world war 4 lol and itachi had JUST lived through a war and didnt want to start the next world war because his family wanted to take over the village.

The leaf is mean man. They're the strongest nation, hiruzen would probably head straight to Naruto and hide him, so the Uchiha wouldn't be able to control the nine tails. At this point itachi also only just awakened his mangekyo. He wouldn't have his complete mastery yet with susano etc. And then the leaf village just has the numbers on them. Would be a 10 vs 1 situation for the uchihas. And hiruzen is just so nasty on his own. But still got danzo, the hyuga clan would probably be a strong enemy on their own for the Uchiha, whole anbu to deal with. Nah the leaf wipes them. Itachi is a genius. When danzo told him "side with the Uchiha and get annihilated with the rest of your clan or.." I think itachi knew he was right. And it is why he went with option b which was side with the leaf and help his brother survive. Itachi also just loves the leaf. He feels he is a leaf Shinobi first, before being an Uchiha. Hashirama would've loved that man

Shisui was going to use his genjutsu to control Itachi’s dad (the leader of the coup) to try to get him to convince everyone to change their mind about the coup. But it wouldn’t had worked because the entire clan was already gassed up and ready to go. They would have just called him a traitor and did the coup anyway. Danzo knew it wouldn’t work so he stole Shisui’s eye to prevent him from trying that.

Also, Itachi loved the Leaf as a whole. He knew the Uchiha clan coup would basically destroy the entire village, no matter which side won. So he chose to protect the village.

Yeah it always baffles me when people get mad at Sasuke for not following Itachi's will when Itachi, well-intentioned as he was, essentially let the Leaf get away with being horrible to the Uchiha by letting himself get used by Danzo.
