If you rewatch the final clash, you do see Itachi's hand briefly over Sasuke's Chidori. Itachi doesn't agree with what Sasuke is doing, but he did say he would support him no matter what, so he's keeping his word. But yeah, as others have said, highly recommend that you finish the rest of the series after the main storyline wraps, as well as The Last movie (which you should probably watch before Episode 494). That should cover the rest of the Naruto canon material and serves as a nice epilogue. Admittedly, I don't like Boruto, but the Boruto movie is good and more or less covers the first major story arc, but also is largely self-contained.
