MISS SAIGON 25TH BIRTHDAY

Ya this one is tragic. It’s a retelling of the opera “madam butterfly”. It’s such a real experience and that’s truly what makes it even more heartbreaking. From what I’ve heard from my east and south East Asian friends who have done this show, they say although it is a dream show it is taxing and most leave after their first contact is up because it’s just a lot to carry. I have to say the engineer is the show stealer. He is amazing. I think the actor (blanking on his name) did such an amazing job of making it his own because Jonathan Price (the og) made it sooo iconic (for posative and negative reasons iykyk) and tbh now his is kinda the go to way to play the part. And to be able to do that in a role you didn’t originate I think says sooo much about your talent, charisma and Stage presence. Eva you may recognize from Hadestown. And fun fact the engineer is now in Hadestown. So fun little connection. The original part of Kim was played by Lea Salonga who you may know as Mulan and Jazmine. Also the helicopter landing on stage will always amaze me. So insane. Ya this was a great watch I’d LOVE to see you react to more live stage pro shots. There are some REALLY great ones out there.

And yes les Misérables was written by the same people

The Engineer, "the hustler dude", was played by Jon Jon Briones; Gigi, "the strong h***er", was played by Rachelle Ann Go; Kim was played by Eva Noblezada. I was fortunate enough to see this musical live when the Broadway tour group came to Portland, OR a few years back. It was my first time seeing it, but I went with my mom (who had seen it before), and she wasn't very excited to see it because of what happened. Nonetheless, she agreed that the music was/is good. On a different note, I have a friend whose parents are both from Vietnam, they met in the U.S. My friend says their dad will sometimes tell a story about how he and his family were on one of the last helicopters out of Vietnam. Their dad was about 7 years old at the time, so doesn't remember much.

This was the only musical I've ever actually seen on Broadway (Around 30 years ago). I also saw this a couple of times on National Tours.

I actually just came back from holiday in Vietnam

Tyler Explains It All

This is my all time favorite musical. I have a poster signed by the touring cast when they came to my city.

My mom was just in Saigon and Cambodia. She brought me back a fan and one of those hats. I love Vietnam. I took Vietnamese. Xin chao (hello) lol

Fun fact: The actor who played Thuy's new was very little english. And yet he did an amazing job on my opinion

Tyler Explains It All

The actress playing Ellen was only 35 when she played this role. She is 45 now. And Chris was only 28. So it was only a 7 year difference. Not crazy.

I wish I knew more about what was going on in Myanmar. My grandmother is from there but she left a really long time ago
