OLIVIA RODRIGO - OBSESSED + BONUS

Comments

Brianna Washington

so exciting!! ok so i definitely think you should listen to sour but if you are wanting to revisit guts without having to listen to it again, she has a concert on her youtube of a bunch of the songs acoustic where she sounds INCREDIBLE!! and she talks about the album process with her co writer/producer Dan Nigro. it’s a GREAT watch

I Am Not Chamari

Obsessed is SUCH a banger I'm so glad that you liked it! Honestly, I think it makes sense for you to go back and listen to Sour. It's what blew Olivia up and made it possible to explore more of the sound she wants to do, which I do truly believe is a lot of the more grungy, rock sound. There are a lot more ballads on Sour than there are on Guts, but I think it works as it is a breakup album! As Brianna mentioned, there are some amazing acoustic live performances and she's also done a lot of the rock/upbeat songs live as well - for example, SNL, tiny desk, Jimmy Kimmel, etc. And Olivia writes all of her music with her trusted producer, Dan Nigro! Girl I've Always Been and Stranger are self-written.

In terms of why Olivia did all of these different kinds of sound, I have two main thoughts. 1. The album concept of spilling your guts works so well with so many different sounds and it makes sense to explore genres all within that one theme. 2. I think she is definitely a pop/rock girlie in terms of the music she ultimately wants to make, but I also think she is interested in making music that she would want to listen to and that is in the style of her influences. I feel like it goes back to her really only making music primarily with one producer - they're just able to explore so much together while it still feeling authentic to who Liv is as an artist.

Oh, I love that concept of her, spilling her guts! That would make sense because we deal with so many different emotions, which would have different sounds. I really really like that!

I 100% think you should do Sour! It’s an amazing album!

I can't wait for you to get to the lover album because there's a song on that that's always for me shown that same.... I'm ok now vibe... That you called out on stranger. I forgot that you existed. It's such a cheerful post break up song. And I agree.... There aren't enough songs like those that focus more on the fact that you get to a point where it doesn't hurt anymore.

Can you react to Olivia's most recent Tiny Desk? It's awesome! Really showcases her voice and pure talent!

such a great reaction! you always pick up on those vocal riffs/plays, i loved your reaction to these deluxe songs. these are the songs that didn’t make the cut for the album or didn’t fit thematically. From what i gathered, her first album had a lot of (great) ballads and a lot of the songs are about the same guy, it’s a break up album. So she gotten a lot of feedback that that album was too depressing/slow. So for her GUTS album that you reacted to, Olivia said in interview that she wanted to show the other side of her, her humor and tongue in cheek style personality. so GUTs kinda has that vibe. Some people went in expecting a more serious album then was taken back by how tongue in cheek it was. also, F those youtube haters, i love your honesty! All that said, i think you would love SOUR because it has a lot of ballads, a lotttt of emotions compared to GUTS. And i think you may like her latest tiny desk concert - 4 songs from GUTS but it’s more acoustic setting, but what i find really cool is that she plays instrument on all the 4 songs, so you get to see another side of her live.

I agree! Love her reactions! Hate when she cries…LOVE when she laughs! Whenever Audrey reacts to anything AT ALL and says she doesn't care for it, usually, I already feel the same way she's feeling and then she says it, and it’s like *magic*!!! And I feel very well validated! So, she just puts the nail in the coffin of a lot of these songs for me! Then there are some songs I feel like, Audrey or some of you don't like, that I actually love. A little something for everyone! 😊
