I think people defend Damon (kind of unreasonably, and this is coming from someone who loves the character (not the person)) because the writers really regretted making him such a villain early in season 1 because they didnt realise how much it would affect the audience, so they proceeded to basically ignore their own canon and that gives everyone permission to do the same (exactly like Chuck Bass in season 1 of Gossip Girl). For me, this is more about the failure of the writers than anything else. But for sure there are some unreasonable Damon fans dismissing his worse qualities, he absolutely is a bad guy (which makes him a very interesting character)
