EVERMORE ALBUM REACT

Comments

Clara Gros-Louis

Less than 3 hours, I'm assuming this wasn't a live XD

Becky Tucker

Thank you, Audrey!! Love that you’re learning her lyrics because it makes it so much more fun to sing along

Becky Tucker

Champagne Problems was written with her ex, Joe ( pseudonym William Bowery) and it’s supposed to be fictional… Joe wanted her to write more non biographically but these songs ( folklore and evermore ) seem to have a lot of truth in them in hindsight

Becca

I love the evermore scarf! It's amazing like you said to slowly break down the stories of these songs and get to the point where you feel like you get it! Kind of like cardigan/August/Betty. The two songs tis the damn season and Dorothea are usually viewed as linked. Dorothea is from the perspective of the man left behind when she went out to make her name and her career who still loves her. And tis the damn season is her disillusioned a little by the reality of fame wanting to just pretend for the holiday that she took the road not traveled with him. But still.... She won't ask him to wait if he won't ask her to stay.

Tiffany T

So many things to say but the most important are, Audrey, I always appreciate your vulnerability so thank you for sharing these. Secondly, Weenie's little snoot sticking out of your scarf was soooo stinking cute

katie

happiness is about her longtime best friend abigail's marriage which lasted 7 years, no body no crime is completely fictional and the haim sisters (danielle, este, and alana are some of her best friends who also opened for her on eras tour in august). they performed no body no crime live on eras as well if you want to check that out! dorothea is allegedly about one of her best friends selena gomez, champagne problems is fictional. ivy is fictional too. this album along with folklore (which btw it goes folklore then evermore, they're sister albums both released in 2020) are a mixture of her life and fictional stories

Jaimie C

I've been waiting for this one 🥰 it's my favorite album!! Also I am happy you stop throughout the songs to decipher the lyrics. I much prefer this rather than people missing the lyrics and miss the story. Thank you!

Becca

Hahaha, I was waiting for you to get to No Body, No Crime. Did not disappoint. I love that one. The subtle shifts in the lyrics that drive the story. The overall sound of the track. And best of all, the smug way she whispers that final word. Just awesome!

Leanne W

Folklore was first and then Evermore. Most of these songs are meant to be fictional. There is a rumour Champagne Problems is real and is just flipped, that she proposed to Joe and he said no and that ties in with her line in "You're Losing Me" "I wouldn't marry me either, a pathological people pleaser" But that's just a rumour! No matter if it's true or not, it's an amazing song!

Savvy

Love your idea of doing lover album before tortured poets! That will be great!!! :) As that’s the high of the Joe relationship, and then we go into the downfall in tortured poets… “I assume lol”

katie

btw bon iver is the same guy who collabed with her on exile on folklore. he used a much lower voice on exile and used a much higher on evermore. personally, evermore is one of my favorite songs in her discography🥲

Michelle Peeples

Tis The Damn Season-I always thought of this song as a friends to lovers song. She’s home for the holidays and she’s thinking about exploring the attraction while she is on vacation , but she is aware it won’t go anywhere.

Annie Willow

Ivy is about Emily Dickinson and her sister in law Sue from Sue’s perspective. The song even plays at the end of the penultimate episode of AppleTV+ Dickinson after a beautifully intimate scene with Emily and Sue.

Courtney Santoro

Obsessed with your baby in the background <3

Mara Stoll

The Bon Iver part is supposed to sound different in Evermore because it’s meant to be her lover (Joe Alwyn) coming into her life when everything else was really awful and completely breaking her out of the spiral she was in so then she can come back to it from a healthier healed place knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel

Mara Stoll

I love Goldrush because it’s meant to (I think) represent a dream about being with this guy who’s not meant for her and so the opening and ending sections represent the fade in and fade out of the dream sequence hence why they’re so sparkly lol

Marina Ribeiro

Evermore was released after folklore! And they are both mainly ficcional or about someone she knows. Your reactions are great, Audrey !!! I just loove it !

DazzleFae

Your story about your Grandma literally made me sob. So thank you for that. No, it was heartbreaking and beautiful and just had me thinking. Hearing your Grandma just talk about when she was younger is so upsetting. Recently mine was talking to me and some of my cousins about her first job. And the way she just so casually mentioned the sexual harassment she went through every day from every single one of the men she worked with as if it was nothing was horrifying. Me and my cousin had to actually tell her that it was not okay that they did that. You're so right about how much worse it used to be for women, and you just had me thinking about that.

Brianna Washington

"I don't like slow motion double vision in rose blush" I haven't looked this up yet so forgive me if I'm off but I always look this line to mean a whirlwind behind rose-colored glasses. Like everything about it is not what it seems with the relationship.

Becca

Your story about your grandma was so sad and beautiful. Things really have improved for women and we are lucky to live now. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but in the background of Marjorie part of the background track includes a recording of her grandma's voice singing. And I know she's mentioned that wherever she takes the eras tour is like her grandma also gets the chance to sing that huge stadium venue too. I've always thought that was a beautiful acknowledgement of her grandma's talent and dreams and more than likely encouragement to Taylor when she was young and dreaming of a music career.

Tanya

In Gold Rush I always thought of rose blush as like ‘rose coloured glasses’. Maybe 🤔 lol

Nikolina Sesar

I just wanted to comment this too but you beat me to it haha

Ann-Christine Gerritzen

I don't like evermore (the song) either. Bon Iver sounded so amazing on exile that I was so excited for this song and then whatever this is happened.

Becca

Wow. Just got to the point where Bon Ivers comes in on evermore. Loved your reaction because that's always how I've felt.... How most of the people I've ever heard from feel. Taylor's part of the song is amazing.... But I absolutely hate the duet part. And it's like lemon juice in a cut too because that's the same singer who collaborated with her in exile which sounded amaaaazing! But when he did that one, he sang in a totally different, deeper part of his range. So everyone was so excited when they saw he was collaborating again on evermore but it was .... So tragic when you actually heard it. Just nowhere near as good as exile.

LanaJulie33

Evermore is my favorite song on the album, aside from right where you left me. Really wish you didn't put the deluxe tracks behind another paywall.. I thought this tier gave access to full album reactions.

Jay Johnston

Interesting is that Thomas Bartlett is credited on many of these songs for keyboard and synthesizer. Thomas Bartlett is the boyfriend and producer for Ella Hunt who played Sue

Michelle Peeples

Majorie says backing vocals by marjorie Finlay. How would they do that if she died in 2003? I know computers can do wonders, but I am so curious about that. :)

Becca

Oh! You asked about the line in Ivy. And the old widow goes to the stone every day. But I don't, I just sit here and wait. Grieving for the living. Basically, the way I see it, she's saying a widow whose spouse has actually died will go to the graveyard to grieve at a headstone. But she's not grieving for someone dead, she's grieving for someone alive whom she can't have. And so all she can do is sit there to grieve. There's no stone to go to or socially acceptable outlet when she's grieving for someone she shouldn't even want because she's married to someone else.

Becca

My understanding is that they took a small clip of a pre-existing record of her grandmother singing. It is really just a vocal flourish on "ah" not a longer song or particular words. You can hear it clearly right after the words "and if I didn't know better, I'd think you were singing to me now" I thought Marjorie was more of an opera style singer anyways.

Becca

Which is really cool tech use you're right, no idea how specifically they do it. I just meant.... That's probably why it's just a tiny moment, because they probably didn't have to worry much to just take that tiny couple seconds and not be trying to match a word or phrase or anything more complicated.

Wayne Joy

Since you got this backwards both in this video and in your Willow videos on youtube I will point out that Folklore came out around 5 months before Evermore. Also as I saw someone else mention, Champagne Problems was co-written by her now ex boyfriend.

Caitlin Green

Evermore is supposedly fiction but now knowing what little information we’ve been given on her and Joe and that time frame it seems like it might hold more truth than fiction. People have linked Champagne Problems to her relationship with Tom Hiddleston who she dated right before Joe. There are rumors he asked Taylor to marry him and she said no. Closure is rumored to be about super model Karli Kloss. Karli and Taylor were best friends during the 1989 era and even rumored to be involved romantically but nothing concrete has ever been said about that. Karli went on to marry someone in the Kushner family and now has close ties to Trump and is friends with Scooter Braun who we all know “stole” Taylor’s masters. It’s been said Karli wrote Taylor a letter years after their falling out to get closure but Taylor never responded to her. Time to Go also calls back to Karli. “The words of a sister come back in whispers to prove she was not” people have speculated that Karli gave Scooter insider information to be able to keep Taylor’s masters from her. And this song also calls to the scooter and Scott situation with the “15 years 15 million tears begging until my knees bled” she was with her old record label for 15 years and begged to purchase her masters but they would not let her. “He’s got my last frozen behind glass” is a nod to the fact that they had her original work frozen and out of her reach. Marjorie is dedicated to her grandmother and is track 13. On Folklore Epiphany is dedicated to her grandfather and is also track 13. Coney Island ties in a few different relationships. The accident linking it to Harry Styles and the snowmobile accident. The birthday cake and him not showing up linking it to Jake and her 21st birthday. Not thanking someone at the podium a call back to when Calvin Harris didn’t mention her in his acceptance speech at the iHeart awards even though she thanked him in hers.

David Arch

"Slow motion double vision in rose blush" I think means drunk or tipsy.

Emma Ballantyne

Evermore didn’t hit for me until she performed it at an eras show, that completely changed my view on it! i recommend checking that out, you might like it better :)

Brianna

The song evermore is one of my faves! 😭😅 To me, I relate the lyrics to feelings of grief and loss. The first and second verse describes things like staring out a window contemplating death and then walking in winter a storm.. feeling so low about what happened, then the bridge with Bon Iver is meant to be like a wrench in the gears… it’s the climax of feeling the depths of grief and depression and then it ends with the soft, ‘but you were there’ … that feeling of relief when someone/thing pulls you out of it. The pain won’t in fact be forevermore. That’s just my interpretation of it but I do definitely think that the off-putting disruption in the music is purposeful 💗

✨Megan✨

Wayyy too much AMAZING content in one day! I LOVE these kinda days! 🥰

Wayne Joy

Bon Iver was the guy from the Folklore video who was wearing the bandana as a face mask. Their duet 'Exile' from Folklore was very well received so they did another one for Evermore. His voice on 'Evermore' with all the effects is what he usually sounds like on his albums.

Cody

Yes they are also the 3 girls that play the evil step sisters at the start of the bejeweled music video

katie

yes!!

Paula

Not that “who” song are about matters but Gold Rush is rumored to be about Harry Styles and his music video to his song satellite has a reference to Gold Rush. In his music video there are street signs at an intersection that say “gold rush” and “eagles.” In Gold Rush, she mentions her eagles tshirt hanging on the door. Also, there is speculation that his song Satellite could be about her. Not sure - but the street signs were definitely intentional. Listening to some of their songs that are speculated to be about each other, you get why we have 1989. I think there was way more to that relationship than the public saw (which good for them to find a way to be together out of the public eye). There songs about each other are beautiful it their own way, even if some of them are sad.

Noelle

This isn’t a Joe breakup album (the ex-boyfriend you were thinking of). They were still together when the album was written and released, and he actually worked on it with Taylor! He’s also a bit younger than her, so if Taylor’s talking about an “older man,” it’s NOT Joe. Long Story Short (one of the more optimistic and loved-up songs) is about him, but the more “break up” tracks aren’t about that relationship. Like Folklore, many of these songs are fictional stories or based on other people in her life

Melody P

Both Folklore & Evermore have many songs that are not considered from Taylor's personal experiences...though there may be parts she pulls from her past.

Paula

That is what I think of too

Shani Gribben

I know that Carolina isn’t on this album but it does totally fit the vibe of this album

Shani Gribben

My grandma puts ice in her wine but I always assumed red wine was meant to be consumed at room temperature

Nikki Badgett

Someone prob already said this j but this is my #1 fave Tay album (I say #1 fave bc I have a hard time saying any aren’t my faves lol) so I have a lot of thoughts and I’m just gonna comment as they come. 1.) Folklore came first. 2.) Evermore is still supposed to be “stories” but I’d say it’s more metaphors and there is a lot of Taylor’s personal experience still in these songs even if they are written from a different perspective. I saw a video where Swifties far smarter and more researched than I said this is about Scott Borchetta selling her masters and now I can only hear that. lol. Scooter Braun, who bought them was always mean to her and all around a douche. But, Scott, who ran her label and sold them to him was family to her. They’d been together since the beginning and she loved him and tried to buy them herself. Of all the people to sell them to if not her; he knew she’d been bullied by Scooter and how she felt about hm. And then he didn’t even give her a heads up. He was so close to her family he spent holidays with them etc. Her dad owned stock in the label and was on then board and she was the first client and put him on the map. She grieved not only the masters but her ruined relationship with him.

Nikki Badgett

They only wrote sad songs together. She even mentions that in an interview. In hindsight most think they were probably breaking up and getting back together during these albums where we thought they were all lovey. Midnights also reads like mostly a breakup/melancholy album in hindsight. Also in “You’re losing me” which was written at the same time as TTPD was started and way before we knew they were having problems or broken up she says “How long could we be a sad song til we were too far gone to bring back to life”

Nikki Badgett

This is how I see it too! Couldn’t have said it better!

Nikki Badgett

Also, your interpretation after Happiness of this being her journal I 100% agree with. She has said that starting with Folklore, then Evermore, then Midnights she was able to just put out what she wanted to say and do something different. I think; given all the new info we have about the Joe relationship (approx 7 yrs) being so on and off etc… and the breaking up soon after she reentered the public eye which he tried so hard to keep her away from and had never really had to deal with bc she had taken her hiatus and then the pandemic happened; that all 3 are her fathoming that relationship and the fact that maybe it wasn’t healthy and they weren’t as in love as she thought. They weren’t actually broken up hey when these were released so she couched her feelings which are normally so open as “stories” about other people and with Midnighrs as nights from her past and lovey sounding songs. But if you study her lyrics then you’ll hear it. She was in pain and trying to hide it. And I think Evermore is the most open; where the “stories” are the most obviously about her life and situation. The things about this that scares me is Rep and Lover are her love albums for Joe. More so Rep bc I think she was starting to fathom somewhat on Lover but either way… TTPD seems to be the demise of it. And now that we’re in this era of say whatever I want… and the track list certainly seems like she still is…. And she said she NEEDED to write this album…. I’m SCARED for it. lol. But I think it will be great for you to have as much of this material fathomed as possible before TTPD comes out! Also, I still think Rep drops this month bc I think we need the beginning before the end. I can’t wait for you to hear that or for that vault from it!! 🖤

Nikki Badgett

Also again. 😂. I love Coney Island but it took me a little while to get used to his voice with hers. She sings other songs with the National (Aaron Dessner who is one of her producers is in it with his twin and the guy who sings these vocals with her plus a few others.) I think you should give them a listen too. I could be missing some but Renegade and the Alcott are the two I know and there both beautiful IMO. Also, you mentioned William Bowery writing on it so even though it’s been said I thought I’d remind that this is her long time boyfriend Joe’s pseudonym.

Nikki Badgett

I have to admit that it took me a while to fathom Cowboy Like Me but if you consume any YouTube content (being a creator idk if you do) I would go watch Chats and Reacts vids (esp for Folklore and Evermore) and also The Girls at Home. Both are two Swiftie friends channels but they have much more Insight than I do and when come to a song I don’t fully understand they can help me a lot!

Nikki Badgett

Closure I saw someone already said the Kari Kloss theory but I heard a pretty compelling theory that this is also about Scott Borchetta selling her masters and that he wrote her a letter later trying to patch things up with her family so he could come back around. But I had never paid too much attention to the accent so that would fit Karli or even Joe, if they were apart at the time, better.

Nikki Badgett

On Evermore I heard someone say that’s also a veiled reference to Scott and him selling her Masters. This would’ve been the time she was really grappling with that and also we were in lockdown so she didn’t have a lot of escape. Also, I believe the timing lines up July—- Nov Dec etc… I could be off on that though. Again, I really suggest Chats and Reacts breakdown of this. They have a reaction vid and the like 4 breakdowns of it. If you watch any content at all I’d watch that if you want explanation of these songs. I live most of them more now bc I understand them better. Including Long Story Short which you did a great job fathoming and I liked from the beginning but I LOVE it now! It also helped a lot on Evermore and Cowboy Like Me etc. But also, Justin Vernon is Bon Iver so you were right about him writing his lyrics and while I think that part was meant to be chaotic it’s still not my fave section, though I’ve gotten more used to it.

Morgan Bauman

I feel like the men featured in evermore (except the one you pointed out and applauded as blending properly) could all be cut out of their respective tracks…or replaced by almost anyone other kind of sound…and the songs would improve? No offense to the men, just…the vibe on those doesn’t work for me. (Like with “The Last Time” on Red, which is my only skip from T Swift.) Is the word falsetto? For that kind of singing voice? (I already took my sleepy meds so I could be mixed up) I just…don’t care for that specific sound. So I’m with you on that.

Morgan Bauman

Also… My personal theory (since she emphasizes how cathartic singing “champagne problems” is with a huge crowd in the Eras Tour) is that the song “champagne problems” reverses the characters’ genders to something more traditional, and that 1) it was a true story 2) SHE was the one who proposed (“I wouldn’t marry me either” - You’re Losing Me). Because if that’s the truth, like, her attitude in some of those early live performances makes a lot more sense… And now, too, honestly? The idea of Travis Kelce patching up her shredded tapestry? I dunno. But that’s just my personal theory.

Hannah Alfred

I don’t like the evermore guy harmony/lyrics either! Same same girl!! 😆 It is a great song without him.

Savvy

I really do get your reaction to the evermore bridge when Bon Iver comes in. I felt the same way on first few listens. But truthfully, it has really grown on me! I think evermore is a grower album. I hope you come back and give it another listen one day!

Savvy

Also, there are connected songs on this album! It's Dorothea and Tis the Damn Season. Dorothea is the girl who's perspective we get in Tis the Damn season, and the guy is singing about her in Dorothea. :)

Savvy

wow. I love your theory about champagne problems. this makes a lot of sense!!

Savvy

so in a way, she is singing from Joe's perspective... or her thoughts of how she thought he felt... interesting!

Morgan Bauman

Yes, exactly. Although the song mostly focuses on the feelings of the person who was rejected, just from a second person POV. Also…she wrote it WITH Joe. Which makes the whole thing much more interesting to me? Like working through a rough patch in 2020 so they could stay together three more years after a rejected marriage proposal. Or maybe it was a ‘not now’ and then. Well. ‘Not now’ eventually became ‘not ever’. (Although Jack told us “You’re Losing Me” was written two years ago, sooo…)

Tsukiakari1203

closure isnt involved in the dorothea/tis the damn season story\

Sereta Sutton

Ma’am.. you’re telling me you missed Majorie singing in the background of Marjorie?? 👀👀 😭 I know we were all crying. But go listen to it again.

Sereta Sutton

Y’all. I got Coney Island for my Eras Surprise Song and I was like.. nooo. I don’t like this one. Her singing it on her own was better, but still.. 😂

Savvy

thx! I have seen some debate about this, so since it's not confirmed, I edited my original message :)

Sophie

evermore is by FAR my favorite album she's ever made. As a fan of old poetry, and witchy cottage core vibes, this whole album was right up my alley. It was actually released on Emily Dickson's bday, I think! My favorite is probably right where you left me (which is like my favorite song she's ever written). I also adore Ivy -- just cause it's so pretty and the direct connection to Emily Dickinson and Sue's romance is such a vibe. I think you're totally right about the connection to the song evermore too! One of Emily's most famous poems ends "Sue - forevermore" so I actually do think ivy and evermore are probably meant to be connected specifically. Also, I would recommend listening to the live version of evermore on the eras tour; I much preferred how the bridge sounded when she sang it alone tbh. Cowboy like me and tolerate it are also favorites of mine. Like "you hang from my lips like the garden's of babylon" -- like the famous wonder of the world that no one has ever been able to confirm actually existed! Wildly haunting line. But yeah, I think this is overall her best lyrical album and one of her most underrated. Also, as you were going through I noticed a lyrical parallel between "Gold Rush" and "I Know Places" on 1989. In gold rush she says "eyes like sinking ships on waters so inviting I almost jump in" and in I Know Places she says "loose lips sink ships all the damn time, not this time." So I wonder if she was making a connection there too. Lastly, Taylor's use of literary devices like polyptoton ("you had a speech, you're speechless") or like antanaclasis ("you asked me to dance, and I said 'dancing is a dangerous game'") on this album is like *chef's kiss* and as a poetry girlie, I'm sooooo here for it. I'm hoping tortured poets has a similar energy, and if it does I'm gonna be INSUFFERABLE when that album drops lol.

carly powell

Ivy is such an Outlander-coded song

Tiffany T

Audrey you NEEEED to listen to Taylor singing Evermore at the eras tour, she does the male part and she sounds sooooo good. It’s how the song SHOULD sound

KyraB

I’m all for revisiting and doing the extended Disney + version of the Eras Tour. I’m also on board for listening to Lover album before doing the City of Lover concert. It would be awesome if we could get the Lover album done before Tortured Poets comes out but I know you got a lot you are doing so if not that is totally understandable. I really like the Lover album. I think it is slept on and under appreciated. The more I listen to it the more I like it. It is surprisingly one of the albums I return to most.

Kaylee lynn💋

ig thats whats happens when you date a british man 😂

Sophie

I'm such a fan of the Lover album also, along with evermore it's often underrated imo

Mikala B

There are a lot of comments so I’m sorry if this has already been mentioned… but, fun fact, William Bowery is actually Joe Alwyn. He cowrote some of the songs with her. Folklore came first and then Evermore. They were both written at the beginning of the pandemic.

Sela Cornell

Audrey! Someone probably already mentioned this but Folklore came before evermore! Folklore was released in July 2020 and Evermore was released December 2020. Evermore is the “sister” album to folklore. I used to get them mixed up all the time too😂

Diana

Midas was a king who's said to have had the ability to turn anything he touched into gold. Chevy is an old car model. 'Your Midas touch on the Chevy door' means that he made even the Chevy look fancy. 'Til someone's on their knees', he was on BOTH knees because he was begging her to say yes. I don't like slow motion double vision in rose blush = I don't like being drunk 😂 She wrote Tis the damn season while she was drunk. The story is about this girl named Dorothea that returns to her hometown for the holidays and rekindles her relationship with her ex. Dorothea (the song) is the perspective of the guy. According to Taylor, Dorothea and this guy went to school with the trio from Folklore. Just so you know, most songs on both folklore and evermore are fictional, so don't read too much into them. Very few are related to her own life.

Cody M

With the "motion capture" lyric in evermore, my first thought was her role in Cats. Since, well, that motion capture put her in a bad light.

Jay Johnston

I gotta say 'Marjorie' makes me emotional and so did your story. Both my grandfathers passed away before I was born and my one grandmother passed when I was 4 and the other when I was 14 and I don't really relate to it cause of grandparents but I definitely do relate to it, especially the line of "All your closets of backlogged dreams And how you left them all to me" Sometimes my mom will look at me reading or writing and says she just sees so much of my dad in me. Sometimes even when we're just talking she says that it's like she's talking to him again. He passed away when I was 14 as well but we shared a love of a lot of things, poetry being the biggest thing. Emily Dickinson and her poetry were actually the last thing we talked about before he got too sick and the song 'Ivy' from this album was in the show 'Dickinson' which was what made me start reading her poetry again a decade after my dad passed. 'Tolerate It' is another on that gets to me. My last relationship wasn't a great one and a lot of the time it felt like my love was just being tolerated cause they didn't want to be alone. I've been single since that break up cause I just wanted to take time to get back to me and now I just don't want to fall back into that

Andrea

I have the same thoughts on Lover. I find myself listening to it more and more. Probably is helpful to listen before Tortured Poets — time permitting of course! 🫶🏽

Susan Deans

I always feel terrible listening to tolerate it (one of my favourite songs on the album though) I've actually, unintentionally, been on the other side of the situation. Not to that extent at all though. For context, I've recently come to terms with the fact that I am asexual. I actually broke up with my ex because I felt like I was just sort of tolerating him feeling that way towards me (because that's how your supposed to feel) and I felt, and still do feel, guilty about what I see as stringing him along. I didn't think it was right or fair to him because I absolutely adore him still, just not in that way. But I wasn't ready to be honest with myself yet. The song hits me so hard because I hate the thought of him looking back and feeling that way about me.

Charli

You’re my soul sister! I simply adore u🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

Jonesy96

‘Evermore’ is a masterpiece. It definitely seems like she had an ink and quill in hand when she wrote it. I also love how it has (either a coincidence or she did it on purpose) connection to the American poet Emily Dickinson. Especially the song ‘Ivy’ (one of my favs). The poet was known to write poems/letters to her bestfriend/lover who ended up marrying Emily’s brother. It’s only one interpretation of it, but it’s really fascinating stuff. I love when poetry connects! Glad you enjoyed the album! You’re awesome! 🙂

Starbuck1234!

the order is folklore, the pandemic album written from April -July 2020. She then got to play folklore for the first time with Jack and Aaron at the Long Pond Studio in September 2020. During this time when they all gathered at Long Pond, she wrote a lot of Evermore. They just kept writing. So folklore was written 100% remotely, but evermore was written some in person, some remotely, and very differently. But, still in the forest. She released Evermore Dec 11, 2021 (her birthday weekend, 31) and also won the Apple Songwriter of the year award that week so she gave the Apple Interview with Zane Lowe. Here she talks about Evermore and the writing of it. You should definitely watch that interview, it is so interesting to hear her talk about the inspiration behind each song and folklore and writing these albums. The Apple Interview with Zane Lowe, 2021, on You Tube. Its a favorite.

Starbuck1234!

I’m also a dachshund gal. Oscar is to my left there in my pic, he’s an old timer at 17. I understand you not vibing to the title track of evermore. And Justin wrote his part of the bridge, which I agree is very different from Taylor’s style of writing. BUT. The song evermore and the up-tempo bridge goes very well with the theme/topic of the song. The song (along with Long Story Short) tells the story of Reputation. These songs go together , along with Renegade. They are about 2016 when she was cancelled due to Kanye West and the illegally taped phone call that was video taped and edited to make it look like she was lying (“motion capture put me in a bad light’). This happened in July 2016. In November, she was in a deep depression, which she has discussed, didn’t think she would recover, thought her career was over. In December she was feeling “unmoored”, this means yes uncertain but really UNTETHERED, she was being tossed around, drowning. Then, the bridge happens, and it is chaos. Like what she was feeling at the time, being tossed around in a flood, drowning, didn’t think she would ever be able to climb out. If you have ever been depressed, that is what it is like, a never ending ocean dragging you down and each day is worse being untethered to something , she was drowning. But in the “cracks of light, I saw you, I thought of you, I dreamed of you and it was real enough to get me through, I swear, you were there”. The thought of him got her through her darkest moments, and then its back to the beginning tempo, and with him by her side she knew the pain “WOULDN’T be for evermore”. Even though they recently broke up, at the time in 2016, he pulled her out of her darkest moments and darkest time, her depression, and helped her get back up. And, that is Evermore. She ends it with the “pain WOULDN”T be for evermore”, she ends on and up note. And then she comes back with the second ending with Its Time to Go. I love her endings. I really think you need to listen/watch the live version on evermore at the Eras Tour. It is one of the highlights imo of the tour. She does a fantastic job with it and its oh so good. Reputation was such a rough time. Everything changed during that album. Evermore has Reputation running through it. With Long Story Short, Willow, and Gold Rush and evermore are Reputation coded. And Call it What you Want/Renegade/Long Story Short/Evermore tell the same story of Reputation. Evermore ERas Tour. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLFU3fnX/

Your comment about accents... I hear a touch of a british accent in "bustling" in Champagne problems. Is probably spending so much time with joe and I think possibly in england

Is anyone surprised to hear that Ancestry.com reports that Taylor Swift is related to 19th century poet, Emily Dickinson? It all makes sense. Bring on The Tortured Poets Department!

Not sure if someone else commented this but regarding Gold Rush: I always interpreted this song as a song about having strong feelings or being in love with someone who is really famous, popular, or beloved and being frustrated with the fact you have these feelings for them. Basically like not wanting to like a person and imagining what a relationship with them would be like but also hating that you are having those feelings about that person knowing that it could never happen. I see the "I don't like slow motion, double vision in rose blush" lyric talking about not liking the feelings they get when they think of them or are around them because it's uncomfortable and mushy. Like getting double vision or that cliche slow motion movie moment kind of thing. I always saw "rose blush" as maybe blushing cheeks or the color of a dress.

Also not sure if someone already said this but Dorothea and 'Tis the Damn Season can be seen as sister songs. 'Tis the Damn Season is from Dorothea's perspective when she's reminiscing on her relationship with a guy back home when she visits her hometown for the holidays and thinks about what could have been. The song Dorothea is the guy's perspective where he talks about seeing her on TV and says it's never too late for her to come back and be with him and expressing his love for her still. Pretty cool storytelling! It would have made sense if they were closer to each other on the track list.

Ivy is absolutely a sapphic song. Just another one of her fictional stories. Lots of them are fictional on this album.

No doubt it's the bourbon and attending the service for a friend my age who was amazing and generous and had their life cut short - suddenly - but this reaction was exactly what I need. Honoring your openness and honesty and curiosity and ear.... Thank you for listening with your heart and skill. Off to beverage a little more and lift glass to my friend and colleague.

If you are ages 28 to 55 that grew up in 2000s and 2010s indie-rock boom. They are highly familiar with exact, specific style of "sad dad rock" pioneered by The National and the experimental folktronica of Bon Iver(Justin Vernon). To them, deep, unpolished baritone or a glitchy, weeping falsetto sounds like classic alternative music
