Hey my lovely customers~ I recently ran into a problem that I'm trying to navigate through. I have a few story Ideas that involve certain characters (ex: Megumi, Yuuji). In a post on Tumblr I had someone point out that they are underage and I shouldn't be writing about them despite me aging up their characters.

I found this interesting because in desert Rose Megumi and Yuuji engages in smut but I thought they were at least 18 in the show. They behave older and they have an older appearance I never thought they were 15. Like I don't like young boys I just like emo boys lol, but they don't act or look like kids I guess. I stopped watching seven deadly sins because the girl ban was with looked like a child and the purple haired girls true form is a child. Even though they are hundreds of years old you can't just smack a number on there and everything will be okay, that's just how I feel. I don't like stuff like that.

Needless to say, I'm not trying to defend myself or anything but I can see how writing smut about Megumi and Yuuji can turn some people away.

My question to you my lovely people in my resteraunt is what are your opinion on the matter? Should I continue writing my stories with them in it as aged up characters of course or should I stick with the people of canon age?

I don't think there's a single thing wrong with aging up characters. And tbh, I think the attitude some people have against it is downright bizarre. Like, they're not real! Whatever age you decide they are, is their age. If you were to write a story in which Harry Potter is fifty, then he's fifty. So why is it a problem if you make them 18 to 20?

Diana Arlette

Honestly, you should continue writting stories as you imagine the characters age. We all liked how you writte!

Stephanie

I think it's perfectly fine to write about them, since you're aging them up. Some people are always going to have a problem with it, but you can't please everyone and I think it's silly to argue about them being minors when you're not writing them that way

Snaksnok

It doesn't matter, the reality is these are fictional characters. There is a difference between fiction and reality, fiction does not make people do anything, I hate that mentality of it being oh so terrible to write smut about anime characters, what teenager do you know that looks like JJK character's? If you can't tell the difference between a real kid and a anime man I'm concerned about you. Don't worry about people like that, they hate just to hate and no matter what you do it will never be enough, give an inch and they take a mile.

I think aging up characters is ok so long as the character(s) that interact romantically and/or sexually with them are around the same age. 4 years age difference is the max for me. However when it comes to fics like Desert Rose I thought it’s implied and stated that the “students” are older than their canon counterparts, and that Rose was around Megumi’s age. At the end of the day, everyone will have their opinions. Mine are so long as everyone is an adult and the gap isn’t during a weird period it’s fine. Again Desert Rose is fine with Rose being around Megumi’s age but sleeping with Toji because she is an adult and despite her trauma they allow her to give consent and she’s able to withdraw it whenever she’d like. However I didn’t really enjoy other fics because it’s set during canon and the MC is a first year that flirts and sleeps with Gojo. It’s not the teacher student dynamic it’s when Gojo openly states he’s almost 30 fucking his first year student (a.k.a a 15 y/o)😶

Aging up characters are fine in my pov. It's your story, your rules. They are fictional characters if you say they are 50, then they are 50. Point blank period. As long as people as then up then they are fine

Wolfie_314

When I read any jjk fic I tend to think of the students as over 18, even though in canon they aren’t. I personally don’t feel like there is anything wrong with writing about them as long as they are aged up. In ✨my canon✨™️ I think of the Jujutsu school as more of a college, and the students are all over 18. It just makes more sense in my head. I can understand where people are coming from though but as long as the character you’re writing about is of age and look and act their age I don’t really see a problem. With that said I am open to hearing other people’s perspectives, this is just mine at the moment

MelonCat

I don't have a problem with it to be honest, you are aging them up and is not like you put them in situations of abuse or something like that! I like how you write them so for me is no problem at all 💕

Nessa

You aged them up, there really is no problem at all. I think people take these things way too serious, it's fanfiction after all. I'm an enjoyer of Yuji/reader content, written some myself and always age him up to early/mid 20s, whether it's smut or not. Can't please everyone, tbh. Nothing wrong with enjoying them in this fictional setting, don't let that hold you back from your creativity.

Snaksnok

And for the record I think its fine even if you don't age them up, and I know that's controversial. I'm of the opinion as long as it doesn't look like a real child or try teach people life lessons fiction is fair game. The MHA fandom gets a lot of similar comments, and you can't convince me those characters look like kids, I mean just look at Bakugo! He's ripped 🤣 Don't mind those types of comments, people need to accept people have different opinions for what is and isn't acceptable and they can't force their opinions on others.

StarlightAqua

They are fictional characters, who IMHO are drawn to look like adults. I personally see no issue if you age them up because it's you acknowledging they're adults. They aren't real people, so the reaction doesn't have to be as visceral.

Pinaberry Lamb

You are writing fiction, not a biography. As long as your intentions are fine it should be fine.

Cylon

Personally, as a full-blown adult, I prefer not to read smut with underage characters, however, I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with aging up underage characters. I find no issue with reading or writing smut that has aged-up characters. It’s no different than writing an AU or non-canon compliant story where you are able to pick and choose what canon elements to keep and what to change. I hope this makes sense.

Snaksnok

I still can't get over Gojo being 30, in my head he'll never be older than 20 😂

SadisticKiss

I legit thought the jujutsu school was a college like I had no idea until the person asked me how old they were and I went to check and was blown away to find out that Megumi was 15 like what 😭. Why can't anime/manga writers just write this people in college or something like people like to ship characters. I feel like it's like they want to age up characters when they look like kids but age the characters down when they look like adults that makes no sense XD

Wolfie_314

Yeah LOL Like most characters who look like and act like adults end up being children and i’m just- How are they gonna say this person who looks and acts like a gosh darn 5 year old is 50 but the one who looks like an adult and acts mature is 15? I don’t get it lol

Jess

i’ve only watched the show and even though they might not explicitly state it i think it’s implied they are under 18 because they’re first years in high school. that being said, i think aging up characters is fine. like other people have pointed out, they’re fictional. and as long as your intent isn’t anything harmful it’s okay. also, this is a topic that is so sensitive and heavily debated that you won’t be able to please everyone. i think if you have ideas you want to explore and you have readers who actively tell you they want to read them you should go for it 👍🏼

Amanda Niehaus

I feel like you should finish desert rose with them aged up just because the story is almost done but then probably not write about them in a sexual sense anymore

Murasaki96

It's totally fine. It's fictional, text on a screen. The characters doesn't even represent real people. I don't even care about "aging up" cause in the end it doesn't make any real difference, it's not hurting anyone real. If reading something "problematic" is enough to influence someone to do something similar then they shouldn't be reading/watching it in the first place. I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea but as long as you use trigger warnings then they can choose to opt out. My opinion is that one can write or draw anything (in general, not towards real people). We can't limit or censor ourselves because some people get offended. It's your story not anyone else's. Murder, torture, rape and all these things are wrong irl but it's still somehow more okay to write about that?

Goats Loves Burritos

It’s such a hard topic to discuss sometimes, aging up characters, cuz the answer can be iffy- totally don’t blame you for not thinking they were fifteen cuz I didn’t either, they aren’t really in a proper hs setting and they don’t really act like regular high schoolers? ESP when Yuji just… doesn’t have a legal guardian, makes it seem they’re older. And then it’s like, the media is consumed by all ages so you don’t know who’s grown up with the characters and therefore have kinda grown with them in their mind and who’s genuinely being a creep… I don’t really think you did anything wrong since you clearly weren’t emphasizing and/or fetishizing the fact that they’re underage hs students in their canon media, I’m personally not attracted to them but eh, it’s not my story yk? If people don’t like it they don’t HAVE to read it

SadisticKiss

I like how you said I don't emphasize that they are ‘kids’, because I portray them as adults drinking and having tough conversations. Like if I write a teenager I would emphasize those traits such as mood swings and eye rolling and you know that general teenage I'm an adult but not an adult attitude. I feel like there is a huge difference so I thank you for your input even though you aren't attracted to them lol. It's the emo and the sweet attitude that gets me from both of them that I just like but nothing about like them behaving like children just more softie in my book.

Bunni

Gojo is the prime example of this

SadisticKiss

I thought about that too! Like its okay to kill and torture these kids but I can't age them up and write them living a happy life 😭? Thank you for your input!

SadisticKiss

I appreciate your opinion, so I'd like to ask if it would bother you if I were to write another story with them being aged up and if so can you explain to me?

Amanda Niehaus

It wouldn’t per se bother me if they were aged up without teen in their age and it was set in the future.

Amanda Niehaus

I would also use a trigger warning if you do

SadisticKiss

Okay that makes a lot of sense this thank you 🖤

SadisticKiss

I'm a little slow so I wasn't thinking about them being under 18 just because of how violent it is I don't like thinking that kids are being put through trauma like that so I guess I just assume they are adults. I do appreciate your input 🖤

SadisticKiss

Yes I never wanted to write about kids I just like the characters and they all die in canon so I will never see them older anyway 😭. I like how you said its like Au because it is an alternate universe where they are 21. I don't like lolis or anything like that so it kind of blind sided me when someone had pointed it out so I was like oh wow XD. Anyways thanks for the input 🖤

valleydoll

i dont know it’s a weird thing cause right now in real time they’re my age 20/21 but right now in the manga they’re 15/16 so it is a weird situation but i guess as long as they’re aged up i dont care it’s fiction at the end of the day

Karleequinn

It’s fiction, and you aren’t sexualizing children. You aren’t writing about children. It’s aged up like you said. Write what you want to write. I’ll still support you. And saying aged up is still inappropriate is like saying you can never have sex with anyone cause they were a child at one point.

Stonecoldsensitive

I think if the characters are aged up, it's fine. It would be wrong if the characters were minors in the fanfiction/story. I would read future works with them so long as they were aged up/not in high school 🤷‍♀️

Karleequinn

Also, with that logic it’s like saying you can’t write about nanami cause he died. Uh, yes you can, cause In your story, he isn’t dead. You can’t write about Yuuji and Megumi cause they are underaged; yes you can cause in this story they are 18/19.

SadisticKiss

Wait that is crazy they would actually be 20/21 in real time I never realized that 😭

SadisticKiss

You make a good argument and thank you for your input 🖤

MyaTheDERP

I get where the anti aging up thing comes from but I have no issue with it usually because I can usually tell the intentions of the writer by the way aged up stories are written. I feel like most of the people against all aging up assume the character is the exact same but with a new number slapped on them so creeps can claim they're not being creeps (which I know does happen but you can def tell when that was the intent). It just also just feels like some of those people are so loudly against it because they're desperate to prove that they're not a creep. Kinda like how some people film themselves constantly helping homeless people to try and prove that they're a good person

MyaTheDERP

Also JJK doesn't do a good job differentiating teens and young adults. Like teen Gojo and Geto look EXACTLY like their adult selves except with different haircuts. There should be more than a hairstyle change to depict someone aging by 10 years lmao

SadisticKiss

Yes! In taken I call it college like Jujutsu university. I don't want high school kids and don't find them attractive I like anime characters that arent real and that behave in a way I like.

SadisticKiss

Yeah because that would be necrophilia 🥺. (jk jk)

valleydoll

yeah megumi is 2002 and yuji is 2003!

SadisticKiss

I thought he was younger than Nanami at first and like in their 20’s 😭

SadisticKiss

I know right! I just learned that Gojo was thirty like what 😭? I completely agree too, I feel like they should make it even more obvious that they are older or younger. But in the end they are just fictional anime characters. I've always had mixed feelings about my hero I'm not even ready to go down that route lol

Jess

no worries! i think jjk in general makes us so warped about how we view ALL of the characters because of how intense and messed up jujutsu society is. like nanami looks like he’s in his mid thirties when he’s actually late twenties 😭

SadisticKiss

Yeah it's pretty crazy that he's younger than gojo, and your right if they were doing more teeneage stuff like sports or something maybe it wouldn't feel like they were so old or if they had them not fighting for their lives like they are in war 😭

SadisticKiss

You know I want to write a mha fix bevause I fell in love with bakugou but I'm too scared to because of that 😭

Snaksnok

Don't beeee, people will bitch and moan anyway, might as well have a good time! The students literally fight in a war in that show but gods forbid they have sex I mean honestly it's ridiculous! Write what you want, you're not gonna please everyone but you'll never be able to do that anyway so it doesn't matter

Stonecoldsensitive

I completely get where you're coming from :) I loved Taken

ScarletzAce

I think it's okay to continue aging up characters. Ngl I'm eating this shit up too. You're literally the only fanfic writer i've ever actually read from and kept rereading. Most other fanfics i've "read" i barely got a chapter or two in. I'm living for the Megumi x Sukuna and chapter 31 from Desert Rose where Geto was helping Yuji fuck Rose right. Omfg don't even get me started on chapter 41. ANYTHING YOU WRITE IS A MASTERPIECE so write what you want because i feel like if people keep trying to tell you what to and what not to write is gonna affect the quality of everything in a bad way.

Bee

I like to go by the good ole rule of "Don't like? Don't read." Tumblr is notorious for people forcing their views onto others. Don't let them get to you. When I started watching a lot of animes, I was teenager. I watched a lot of animes with highschool boys in them. I grew up. And with the power of fanfiction, so can they! Woo! It's your story, you can freaking turn a character into a dog riding a unicycle if you want to. Aging up isn't a stretch.

Ironfist Asuka

Hey, just want to echo what everyone else is very sensibly saying which is, I think if the characters are aged up, it's fine! Thank you so much for your fantastic writing 😊 very happy fan over here and love your writing style!!

Jess

Age up characters is fine. Plus in anime yes they are 15 but currently in the manga they are 22 I believe. I support you and your writing. If people don’t like it then they shouldn’t read it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. It’s all fiction nothing about it is real. I don’t have an issue with other people aging up characters.
