Matt and Daniel are joined by friend and Rabbi Yoseph Leib to remember Matt's longtime friend Ben Ziggy. And in the show's ongoing chronicle of the amoral and clinically stupid, we cover Coleman Hughes' herculean feat of blame shifting for the Free Press, and we return to Daniel Maté's personal Alkali Lake: the Habonim Dror summer camp.

Palestinian joke: A father meets the teacher of his son on the street and asks him: “Is my son doing well in school?” The teacher replies: “Generally yes, but he does not understand our government – how our government works.” The father replies: “Thank you for informing me. I will explain it to him right away.” The father goes home, finds his son and instructs him: “Your teacher told me that you have difficulty in understand how our government works, so I will explain it to you in a simple way that I am sure you will understand: I am the government, your baby brother is the future, your mother is the goverment's counsellor – meaning that your mother is the one that one can ask for advice – and the servants in our house are the people. – Do you understand, my son?” The son replies: “Yes, I think I do.” The next day the son comes home from school and first finds his little baby brother that just shat in his diapers and is now full of his own shit. Searching for help the son runs into the kitchen where sees his father raping one of the servants. Shocked and confused he runs to his mother, shouting: “Counsellor, counsellor, what shall we do!? The government is fucking the people and the future is full of shit!”

In the early 80's, worked as an editor at Oak Publications. I got to correct mistakes in all the books I used to teach myself guitar. Stefan Grossman was one of the first transcribers of blues guitarists. He was fussy to work with, but laid the foundation for many musicians. The Traum brothers, Happy and Artie, were part of that roots music community. Peter Wernick wrote the first book on how to play bluegrass banjo. It was such a consistent best seller he bought a house from the royalties. If this is new to Daniel, he might want to check out Russ Barenberg, (solo and with Country Cooking) and fiddler Kenny Kosek. Also, The Wretched Refuse String Band with Richie Schulberg and pickup players like John Goodman.

Great episode as always, but last part/breakdown of the Haaretz article was a tough/hard listen - but like Daniel said…. It brings clarity that there is no hope whatsoever in the groups where we once before hoped some moral clarity would unveil itself as of miracle from above. So damn sad.
