“Black Irish” refers to the descendants of Spanish immigrants/refugees fleeing the reconquest back in days of Isabel and Fernando. It’s definitely a way of one group of white people to racialise another (or themselves) and is probably not historically accurate. I’ve mostly heard it as a way of explaining how one member of a family has olive skin or curly hair.

@daniel I'm pretty sure Black Irish is when they talk about really fair Irish people with dark black hair...the myth is that these people are somehow the offspring of Irish women and the shipwrecked sailors from the Spanish armada. Sounds like total garbage to me but that's what I've heard.

I think wikipedia says it’s black haired Irish from the north that didn’t mix with the Danes when they were colonizing the south. I think that makes them “pure Gaelic” or something like that?

The majority of Irish people have dark hair. I myself have dark brown hair, pale and freckly AF, and blue eyes. It's the most common look. No one ever said Black Irish in Ireland unless you are talking about Irish people with African ancestry. It's purely an Americanism. I think it's probably because, for some reason, we're all expected to be red haired. So when we are not, they say I must be black irish or they must be black irish. It's nonsense.

I honestly didn't realize it was an american thing. TBH I think I've heard Irish people (my relatives) say it. I could be wrong. They are in the north. But I feel like I've heard it in Ireland.
