I think the thing that is being missed is there is a member of the task force tailing Light so when L gets a report that Light suddenly has a second girlfriend and its around the time the second Kira appears he just goes on his hunch

Yeah, we saw Light being tailed so it stands to reason they would have seen Misa go to his house on at least one of the occasions.

So, something that's being glossed over; L and the task force tortured a 19 yo girl they *presumed* to be a killer so hard that she wished for death. What are your thoughts on that? Although the stakes are immensely high, I think it crosses a line.

After she is restrained and blindfolded L says: "Watari, take the necessary precautions, but beyond that, you're free to do whatever has to be done, okay? Just make her speak" Then we see Watari putting on white gloves in front of a table filled with flasks with chemicals. Three days later she is begging for death and the task force says "Maybe this was all too much for a young girl to take" and "We've pushed her too far" They don't show the action take place but I'm beyond sure that they tortured the girl, she being a suspect and not even a condemned criminal.
