I know we had a discussion about it during our livestream last week, but I'd love to hear thoughts on the Noya vs Yaku debate.

In this set of OVAs we can see Yaku's strengths, probably for the first time, and as we highlight in this episode, Lev + Shibayama = Yaku. He just has that "something" that allows him to read the game, make great plays, and cover for his teammates' deficiencies.

Do we really think Noya is better?

the snake team is much more enjoyable in the manga, i think it's just the constraint of the time limits they had for the ova, i think both of you would really enjoy to read that part of the manga

5:30 I mean, the spectator was leaning away to give space for Yaku, but he lept the barrier and landed on his foot.

Fun fact!! Haikyuu!! was originally meant to be centred around nekoma which is why they are the most fleshed out besides karasuno

What a disgusting CHEATING play. I'll go against the grain here and say that it wasn't just mean spirited, they actively blocked the view and called a false out with the purpose of making the ref give out a point; I love characters exploiting weaknesses and being cunning, putting a ref on the spot for a call that could damage his reputation is crossing a line. Maybe it's not that common in Volleyball but Soccer is PLAGUED by this kind of "plays", it ends up souring whole matches and tournaments since most players fake stuff. Be cunning; don't be a villain.

LOL jumping on #4 for being soft for sitting out with a dislocated thumb but then he’s the only guy on the team who vocally doesn’t like the tactics the team uses to win points is classic first time viewing of the OVA. Funnily enough when it comes to the comparison of Kuroo and Oikawa a non spoiler tweet of side by side images of Kuroo and Oikawa matching expressions was trending on Haikyuu Twitter recently here https://x.com/totokawamori/status/1858164770588819593?s=46&t=fZ6t5k8AOXKtWz3vCuDOaQ The thing differentiating the twos confidence in my opinion is Kuroo has cultivated a ton of self confidence and belief in his abilities. His love and passion of volleyball supersedes the pressure of wanting to win and keep on going. On the other hand we see Oikawa’s passion and love for volleyball is just as strong as Kuroo, but it boils over in middle school and it turns into pressure that does mentally break him. As far as Oikawa’s confidence coming off as cockiness I think a lot comes from this original break down. The charm and the swagger almost comes off as a character he’s portraying to protect his insecurities. In the post season 2 OVA we see him with the Aoba Johsai pull off the veil and show his true emotions with the team and Iwaizumi afterwards. Once again I’m here to push my agenda that Oikawa and Kageyamas middle school coach was awful and didn’t cultivate their talents which led to mental breakdowns! If Oikawa had Nekomata sensei as a coach would he be different, who knows? Also Oikawa is an antagonist and Kuroo is the cool anime senpai trope in anime so it’s very easy to love Kuroo (who doesn’t) vs Oikawa. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk if you’ve read this far.

I think Yakun is better at digging and passing than Noya, but Noya fascilitates the offense better than Yakun. They're both amazing liberos who fit the themes of their teams.

You know, I’ve also thought it was kinda odd how really small injuries are taken so seriously, but I also think the author of Haikyuu probably felt some sense to not encourage athletes to power through pain and make sure to have it looked at since a lot of his audience were young teens. I thought Adam’s comparisons of Oikawa and Kuroo was funny. I see Kuroo giving more dad energy while Oikawa has only child energy (even though he’s not an only child). Also the lion imagery when Lev was blocking at the end is also because Lev’s name means lion in Russian (per Lev’s intro episode). And it was such a rush to see how Lev and Shibayama worked together and grew during real fame play. Also the end scene was just a commentary that Hinata lives in the mountains slightly more remotely which is why the boar was there lol.

Who Really Cares

Lol, one of the comments on that twitter post: "Kuroo is just Oikawa with good PR and no trauma from Ushijima" LOL

Encountering boars (or raccoon dogs or deers) is a Japanese stereotypical joke of “how countryside a place is”, so it’s just a joke scene showing that Hinata lives in a pretty remote area. (He does have to ride across a mountain to get to Karasuno. And the Karasuno area is already pretty remote compared to Tokyo, as you can see in the summer training camp episodes where they get made fun of by Nekoma)
