Genya backstory woooow! Some notes/clarifications: Genya right now is 16, Sanemi is 21. Exact ages for how old they are when their mom died are never given but just based on appearances Genya could be anywhere from 9 to 12, making Sanemi 14-16. The 'Let's protect our mother and family' speech was a flashback in a flashback. That was after their father was killed, but before the rest of the family died. They had that conversation and then their mother turned into a demon and killed the rest of the family. Adam is right in regards to the mother turning into a demon that night. They say 'she never slept' because the kids always saw her working and caring for them, like she never took a break. You don't really touch on it here due to all the other things going on, but it puts into perspective Sanemi's hatred towards demons and Nezuko when we first meet him in Season 1 at the Hashira meeting. His mother was established as a perfect caretaker and protector, protecting them from their abusive father even at risk to herself and taking care of all of the children even if it meant not sleeping, but she still turned into a bloodthirsty demon that killed her children. The idea of a 'good' demon like Nezuko probably is impossible to him until he sees it. Fun fact: This episode was released on Mother's Day!

Why is Gen’ya, among his teammates of the Final Selection back in season 1 (e.g. Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke and Kanao), the only one to carry a (Nichirin) gun instead of a proper sword? Because he’s the only one who couldn’t put the demon slayer breathing, as he himself explain in his flashback.
