This dynamic of two people in competition trying to defeat Kira, while Kira continues to attempt to stay undetected is verrrrrrrry interesting. I would never have predicted that the anime would head in this direction, but I like it!!

Also, look at Watari with his army of investigators! This is wild!

In the anime, both Mello and Near are considered to be male characters.

Imo Near and Mello definitely *should* have been women. Light has some misogynistic attitudes so it would have been a really interesting dynamic. Also the show in general, despite its many merits, does feel like it lacks well written and nuanced female characters.

magena

M and N are males. It’s interesting that early animation often created androgynous characters lol

Sarah

It took me a second to get there, but Adam figured it out 😊

Sarah

I feel like that about a lot of anime tbh... at least the ones I've watched so far

Sarah

I was so convinced that Rem was male too, but I was wrong, so here I was thinking I was ahead of the game this time. Nope!

I love that L is dead but not gone. The feeling that his legacy lives on and continues to haunt Kira makes it feel like he's the one who ultimately won their contest.
