Near is reaching some incredible conclusions at lightning speed over here. I'm very impressed. Now if only the other police officers can get behind what he is saying, we might be good.... unless Light kills them all.

Liking Light as a person and liking Light as a villain/character is very different. The more you hate light and want him to be caught, the more he is a successfully written character, just like people love to hate Joffrey from Game of Thrones! Also, the dynamic between Mello and Near is so cool! It's some twisted combo of rivalry and camraderie ...

In terms of Mello and Near's different approaches -- Near definitely represents the cold, calculating, and strictly logical side of L. I think his weaknesses are that so far he seems to be more passive, hands-off, and sort of by-the-book. Conversely, Mello is the more emotional, driven, action-oriented side of L (like the version that would reveal himself in-person to Kira). He doesn't restrict himself to any rules or conventions but is 'willing to do whatever it takes'. I think the two of them make for such an interesting antithesis. Mello is driven by ego and feels very 'alive'. He takes initiative. His motivations are clear. While Near seems not to care at all whether or not he's the one to succeed L and be 'first'. It doesn't matter to him whether or not they work together, he just wants to solve the puzzle. By contrast, he appears so detached and almost inhuman.

I clearly have trouble detaching the Light as a person stance from Light as a character 😏

Sarah was 100% correct about Light not being able to kill Mello because only Soichiro Yagami saw Mello's face. That's why Light was so desperate to have his father kill him before he died last episode. Light knows Mello's name, but he still doesn't have his face, so as long as Mello lays low, he is immune to the death note until Light sees an actual photo/video of him or in person. It wasn't explained in the anime super well, but in the manga it makes it pretty clear that when the first explosion happened that isolated Mello and Light's dad in the same room together, the camera that he was wearing got knocked out. Light had no visual, only audio. As for Near knowing the rules of the notebook, in an earlier episode, Near proposed to the Japanese Task Force that they would share the information they had. It was at this point (offscreen) that Near presumably received the information that they had about the death note they had in their possession.

Mello is my favorite and I really love his scene in this episode and his dynamic with Near. I feel like they both have alot of respect for each other its just their (especially Mello and his little brother energy) competitive nature makes them more rivals than friends.

I love Light as a character and as a villain/protagonist That said, he is a atrocious human when the notebook is in his possession I don't think many people are upset with Sarah for thinking Light is a bad guy 😂

I was a little worried about Mello when he joined forces with the mafia guys but I'm appreciating his relationship with Near more and more
