i think maybe figure skating gives athletes more agency in some "game-time" decisions relative to other sports - it's not uncommon for figure skaters to change up elements DURING a program. the athlete's ability to do the math on scoring for their program elements under pressure probably makes it a different decision for every athlete and coach. maybe it's dramatized here, but i don't think it's necessarily rebellious! as a plan-everything-in-advance kinda person, i would HATE that lol, but the risk-reward of going for the higher value, higher difficulty jump over a "flawless" performance probably pays off sometimes! i also think it's a neat bit of story-telling to see an athlete who's been as unconfident and anxious as yuri decide to be ambitious and go full-send rather than overthinking it and worrying about errors! can't wait for y'all to see the next ep :-)

"the most important thing to victor is to be surprised and maybe yuri knows that" YES EXACTLY, you get it! i totally understand sara's frustration with yuri but i think that his choice to do a quad flip was more a declaration of his feelings, and the desire to surprise of course, since it is a jump known as victor's signature move :) and victor is probably pretty lenient with yuri not listening to what he says because, like he mentioned before, he's the exact same type of skater with yakov (the russian coach) so he's understanding of it lol the way this episode has me crying and squealing - from yuri's anxious breakdown to his free skate leading up to the kiss - despite having seen it multiple times before 😭

💋 ⛸️ 🥈 let's go lol, not only were Yuri and Victor surprised but Sarah and Adam as well 🤣

Sarah

I think I'm the same as you... I'm a very low-risk person, so if a coach had a plan for me, I'd generally listen and stick to it!

Sarah

I am 100% a rule-follower, so if Victor told me to do something, I would just listen haha. I can totally see what you're saying, though, and Yuri's thought-process does make a lot of sense

Sarah

very surprised, but I absolutely LOVED IT!!!

I remember in ep 2 when a young Yurio was getting reprimanded by Yakov for trying to do harder jumps in competition than planned, Victor laughed and said that he also used to get scolded for that. So I think that's part of why he wasn't mad at Yuri for not following his orders, he totally understands and was the same way. also... I seriously can't with Chris wtf😭😭

Here's a quick explanation of the scoring system! For the technical score each element has a base point value according to its difficulty, and then judges give an execution score from -5 to +5 which is combined with the base value. Then there's the program components score which evaluates stuff like performance, music interpretation, etc. Your total score is technical + program components - deductions for falls or other violations. Sometimes it can be more advantageous points-wise to do a harder element which has higher base difficulty points (flip) and get lower execution, than if you did an easier element (toeloop) flawlessly. The risk is if you flub the execution so much that it doesn't even count as the harder element anymore, for example if you underrotate so much that the base value gets downgraded from a quad to a triple. Here the announcer said that there appears to be enough rotations, so Yuri got scored on the quad flip he successfully completed just with deductions for execution and the fall. The base difficulty of your elements is really important in scoring-- it's why for the short program last ep Yuri got a much higher score even when others skated their program really well, because he had more difficult elements. That's also why some of them were really happy with scores in the 80s or 90s even though it can look bad compared to Yuri's 106, because it was a good score for the level of the routine they skated. As a side note, gymnastics has a similar scoring system with difficulty and execution which is how you can see Simone Biles fall on her vault and yet still have the highest score.

Sarah

Excellent explanation. Thank you! I was so stressed seeing Yuri go rogue. I thought he was going to mess everything up
