Someone correct me if Im wrong! I think the Senior Grand Prix series generally starts around mid/end of-October (always with Skate America) and ends beginning of December, with competitions commencing weekly (America, Canada, France are the usual order, then comes Japan, Finland and China mixed-up each year, then the final for which the location varies. Until 2022 Russia was one of the six locations instead of Finland.) Competition lasts 3 days so the whole circuit is brutal for skaters, they don’t really have a lot of time to rest in between or significantly redo/change their programs. It is also the first BIG international competition with many of the top skaters participating in the season, so nerves are always high. After the Grand Prix Final come Nationals for each country, for example both Japan’s and Russia’s are at the end of December which do not allow the skaters much rest either (I think the US has it in January, my country also has it mid/end of December.) Europeans start at mid/or end of January, with Four Continents usually somewhere around mid-January to mid-February. Worlds is held at mid/end of March (so now!) Olympics year throws everyone for a loop - some skaters will skip events/ get shuffled because most Federations play chess to maximize medal potential. Injuries early on in the season can also have devastating consequences - a bad ankle or knee sprain in a Grand Prix event may force the skater to withdraw from Nationals, which can easily result from being dropped by their Federation from the Worlds line-up, even if the skater would be fine for Worlds. So when Yuuri tanked the Grand Prix Final due to the death of his dog, it is quite realistic that he did not get over it in 2 weeks and with the additional pressure from that last spot finish, he flubbed Nationals so hard (he finished 11th) that the Federation sent someone else to Four Continents and Worlds.

Ngl plutonic sent me into orbit I cantttttttttt Also brother and sister are disgusting I wish they could stop with this trope in all anime but unfortunately it’s here to stay

Haha well played. This had me laughing.

I think even the skaters in the show hate JJ, tbh. As for the siblings relationship... I doubt many people exist who don't see that as disturbing, and so ubiquitous in anime! This is not even the worst I've seen. And it always comes out of left field and mostly random, and leaves you like 'what did I just watch???' Anime has a history of inappropriate relationships. Like, Cardcaptor Sakura??? 🤢🤢🤢

The last 2 mins of this episode melted my heart 🥹 Never wanted two character to be more real than Viktor and Yuuri.

Sarah

We watched the bonus scene but our editor was not happy with us for skipping the credits, so the credits will be added to the end of episode 12!!

Sarah

I just died.... "sent me into orbit" 😂 ☠️

Sarah

This is really good info. Thank you!!

Why do they do it if so many people think it's weird? Do they think it's funny??

I'm not sure, to be honest. I've read a bit about it, through the years. From questions of bringing in and keeping audiences hooked with romantic tension or the exploration of taboos, to ideas of the Japanese family as a universe of its own, where members of the family depend on each other. I'm not sure there is a definite, single answer. This being said, I'm not an expert, so maybe someone else here or in Discord has better insight. I did read once that Japanese people are not as shocked by these taboos in anime as we are, but not because they find it acceptable. I think they might do a better job than us at separating fiction and real life. Though I've noticed in more recent animes it doesn't happen as often, compared to animes I've watched when I was younger.

For the record, regarding how the dog's still alive - they got him to a vet quickly, so there's a good chance he was already being operated on or whatever was needed while Victor was flying back to Japan. But there was legitimately the possibility of him dying, so Yuri probably insisted on Victor going back so that he could be there regardless of the outcome. It's like if someone was in a team competition in another country and got a call that one of their parents had a heart attack - you'd totally understand the team telling them to go back immediately, even if the hospital already had them stabilized. Since Victor doesn't seem to have any close familial ties, there's a good chance that his dog is basically his closest family, and Yuri of all people would definitely know that.
