I think Sarah mentioned last episode that Haikyuu is great at showing different kinds of athletes and Kinoshita is another case of that. Even if you're not a starter. The simple fact that by helping your teammate get better, you're making the overall team better.

Next week is going to be a big one. Sarah's most Iconic reaction to the series is coming up (if you know you know)

Ayan

i always think about that reaction and wonder if the same thing is gonna be repeated this time around lol

Ayan

i don't think atsumu is particularly harsh on osamu if that's what you guys were implying, he just has that attitude 24/7. one of the first things he says when his character is introduced at the youth training camp is that anyone who can't hit his sets is a scrub, and right before this karasuno vs inarazaki match started he was telling kageyama how he absolutely hates playing against people who suck. he just has high standards for everyone. but yeah, he's generally more polite when it comes to people like kita and aran cause they're older and have seniority (plus he's afraid of kita 💀)

For me, this is Miya Atsumu’s breakout episode as a character. And also for me, he’s a top 5 character in the series. His ideology and ego are something that Haikyuu has generally avoided up to this point. He’s able to carry around this cocky persona because he has put ample amounts of time into training and understanding the strengths/weaknesses of his teammates. While it can come off confrontational, Atsumu himself is actually the most “selfless” with his goals and motivations toward Inarizaki. When he says “anyone who can’t hit my tosses just suck”, it’s an honest statement because he has already put extensive measures into preparing the ideal set for them. And although not directly shown, it’s implied that Atsumu is much tougher on himself than anyone else, even his brother. Super interesting philosophy for a sport like volleyball, and I love the similarities revolving pride between Atsumu and Kageyama/Hinata. Episodes 22-24 are my favorite stretch in the entire show, looking forward to seeing both of you react !

I know when Sarah is going to start crying lol cuz i know I'm going to start crying too 😭 lol

Yes these group of episode in the latter half of this season are all bangers. Love the Kinoshita/Noya moments and the hilarity that is the twins sibling dynamic. 😍

The thing about the twins’ backstory that i love is the line at the end of it about Osamu not loving volleyball as much as Atsumu. They’re twins and genetically identical, and it’s stated that their skill is equal. This shows that what got Atsumu to the top wasn’t talent, but his love and passion for the sport, despite Osamu actually being more naturally gifted initially. This ties into previous messaging in the Aoba Johsai v Karasuno rematch, kind of answering Oikawa’s talent vs hard work struggles. There’s a place for everyone, regardless of initial ability, and the catalyst for success is actually hard work and love. Atsumu is a character foil to Kageyama and was written to be abrasive, so naturally he’s a pretty polarising character. Personally, he’s my favourite character, there’s just something about flawed but genuine characters that really speaks to me. He has very high standards for his teammates, but it’s shown that he also imposes those standards on himself. He goes above and beyond even when he doesn’t need to (the set at the end of the episode). He gives the absolute most he can so he expects the same in return. Out of everyone in Haikyuu (except maybe Hinata and Kageyama), I feel his character most represents a pure love and dedication for the sport. The way he’s so genuinely happy about being able to say “I’m a setter” at the end just melts my heart. Apologies for the essay if anybody actually read this far 😂

Such a great episode :'). Leaving a comment that made me cry from @TrianaNero under Sarah's original reaction to this episode: "Never fails to make me emotional that the chapter with Aran and Miya twins' backstory is called "Love" in the original :") And I love how some of the little bits, like Atsumu being somewhat isolated due to his attitude, help see the difference between him and Kageyama despite both being fairly demanding and intense — like Aran said, it's exhausting when everyone hates you, but Atsumu had this "blessing" in Osamu, which gave him the luxury of not caring about what anyone else thought. And Osamu made sure to include him in his own (often violent lol) way, like when he spiked into his head when Atsumu was sitting away from everyone all by himself. Kageyama, while having a similar approach, didn't have that same luxury, so it took a much bigger toll on him."

“The biggest blessing that Atsumu has isn’t his physique or his various talents. It’s actually Osamu. No matter how fast they run, if no one else can catch up, they’ll always catch up with each other.”When I first saw this sentence, I almost burst into tears. How fortunate it is! You're right, Atsumu is very much like kageyama in junior high school, both in personality and in his position within the team. But Atsumu is luckier than Kageyama because he has Osamu, so he didn't go through what Yagami did. My biggest dream since childhood has been to have a twin (though it's impossible now). Imagine feeling your twin before the concept of "being alive" even existed. My friend described them as "two souls so close, soaking in the amniotic fluid for ten months, and coming into the world one after the other." Oh my, that's so well put.

Lemon

By the way, although I said all those things, the twins are still two different people. Osamu's last words made me think for a long time. I think he is different from Atsumu. He is the kind of person who likes to explore his inner self and seek the answer within before declaring a conclusion. But then again, since they share the same DNA, their ways of thinking should be quite similar. Atsumu is "intuition + sensibility", while Osamu is "intuition + rationality". Both of them have the intuition to know exactly what they want at once, but Atsumu is like "This is it, this is it", while Osamu is more like "This is it, is it really this? Yes, this is it."

I cant believe theres only 4 episodes left

My favorite moment including Hinata is coming up

This chapter is one of my favorites. The context of the twins goes beyond what is shown. I sense a certain dependence, attachment, and rivalry. With the phrase "Atsumu's greatest blessing isn't his physique or his talent, but Osamu. Even if no one else can run as fast as him, they always chase each other." It's very accurate to say that Atsumu is similar to Kageyama during high school, but unlike him, Kageyama was completely alone, his existential problems on and off the court, something Atsumu didn't go through since he was always by his brother's side. Even if his brother didn't have any friends, having Osamu was more than enough. Something I can perceive by reading the manga and the anime I can say that for Atsumu, although many classmates pushed him away or spoke badly of him, he did not care for the simple fact of having volleyball and his brother, although, between them there was a rivalry and Aran mentions that Osamu is more talented than Atsumu, but when comparing what Osamu says, although they both like volleyball, Atsumu loves volleyball a little more. Another thing I can mention is how Atsumu reacted to Kita's concern when he gets sick, since he is not used to the concern of others besides Osamu. Atsumu has a brusque, somewhat self-centered personality, he was very direct and honest, without measuring the consequences of his words and had enough skill to ask for the same, he was always someone who gave 200% and wanted the same from his teammates and was clear in saying that if one of his spikers could not spike, he was of no use to him, this caused him many problems so it was seen that he had no friends beyond Osamu, but he did not seem to care much, so he was always next to his ball practicing, this helped him a lot, since over time he improved his skills a lot, even surpassing many, where I can perceive that effort exceeded talent. Something that made me really love Atsumu is how he fell in love with the Setter position and his devotion to the position, although he mentions his way of perceiving the game, and how the results were everything, he was the most devoted person to his teammates, giving a pass with his fingers and not a low one, since he can have contact with the ball with more parts of his body, because he is a setter. He is never satisfied with the first thing he sees or learns, his hunger for volleyball is very great, his love for volleyball goes beyond, his ambition for the sport is something part of him and his person. Osamu seems to me to be someone similar in terms of personality, but unlike him, he was more aware of what others think, so he was kinder, polite and careful with what he said, showing this detachment from a young age. Even so, Osamu never left him alone, always bothering him and spending time together, so that he was not alone, (Atsummu sitting alone, while the others are in a group and talk about Atsumu and Osamu hits him) Showing how on and off the court he tried to include him, but yes, when Atsumu went too far with his words or actions, he was always there to correct him.

I love Kageyama saying he's glad to have come here too after seeing Atsumu's set, mirroring Hinata after seeing Hoshiumi play up-close. They both found players who inspire them to get even better! Also interesting that Kageyama and Atsumu have pretty similar "my sets are good, so why aren't you scoring?" mindsets in middle school. But they differ in that Kags didn't realize how his attitude was affecting other people until the big fallout, Atsumu knew and just didn't care lol Atsumu is crass and demanding and doesn't care if his harsh attitude causes others to dislike him. His only focus is playing volleyball and he expects his teammates to meet him at his level. Osamu sees the friction this causes in Atsumu's relationships and decides to be mindful of his attitude and how he talks to others, because he does care about what people think of him. He still loves volleyball, but not to the extent of disregarding everything else like his brother.

Judy

if there's anything i love as much as watching your reactions, it's reading the comments on everyone's perspective and how each scene affected them ❤️. Haikyuu is just a gift that keeps on giving! Im devastated that it's almost over 😭

Lloyd Fouchea

I would go as far as to say if Atsumu didn't have Osumu he would have definitely ended up in a similar situation to Kageyama in middle school.

Trysh Ong

If Atsumu didn't have Osamu, I think the team might stand up to him and ignoring him no matter how good he is, mirroring Kageyama situation. But it also depends on the coach

LP

That line "Because I'm a setter" coupled with Atsumu's wide grin always makes me tear up no matter how many times I've watched the scene. Just, the absolute pride and joy in committing fully to his role as a setter. The most dedicated and considerate to his teammates indeed. He doesn't pull off that amazingly difficult set because he wants to show off, despite how easily flattered and distracted he is by the opposing players' cool feats. His teammates may dislike him all they want, but when they're on the court, Atsumu will do everything in his power and beyond to help them get the ball over, not only because he's competitive as all hell but also because he genuinely loves the sport and loves playing as a setter.

LP

I'll be honest, the unfortunate unholy timing pause the first time round still haunts me to this day.....

minnie

this episode always gets me too!! i think every athlete & former athlete (esp former benchwarmers like me!) relates to that feeling of disappointment when you've been working and practicing hard and it feels like it doesn't show up in your performance in a game when you get a chance. kinoshita & kita are really beautiful examples of how hard work ALWAYS shows up somewhere even if it feels like it's going unseen and unshown

bungi

ATSUMUUUUUUUUUUU MY LOVE he is a bit crazy tho lol

Sarah

I swear I didn't make the same mistake again... but in my defense, HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW??!!

Sarah

I don't know.... I understand what you're saying, but there's something about that edge/ego type of statement that is incredibly off-putting to me

Sarah

I feel like my passion for Kageyama and what he represents is a big reason for why I struggle to like Atsumu. Kageyama and Atsumu are similar but VERY different, and I can relate more to the Kageyama side of things than Atsumu's. I feel like they are both flawed but genuine (as you mentioned Atsumu being) but Kageyama doesn't seem to have as much of an ego (unless he's talking to Hinata)

Sarah

Lydia always surprises us haha

Sarah

I knowwwww!!! The comments are soooo good!!

Sarah

That Kinnoshita moment will get me every time 😭

Marshal Childress

Okay. Now bring in a 3rd person so adam can have his second watch thru

Tiffany Chang

I just think it's incredible Haikyuu takes the time to highlight Kinoshita's "hero" role in this way. Love the twins backstory!

绮慧 丁

Oh Sarah! I feel the exact same way!! What made me fall in love with Kageyama at first wasn’t his strength or his genius—it was how openly jealous he gets whenever someone else plays well. He’s SO real for that honestly. And he was the first one to recognize Hinata’s insane athletic talent, even when Hinata was just a total newbie. That’s such a core part of who Kageyama is—he respects anyone who takes volleyball seriously, no matter how good or bad they are right now. Like Furudate said, in volleyball, Kageyama treats all of humanity as his rivals lol. And when it comes to Hinata… yeah he doesn’t wanna lose to him, can’t lose to him, so of course he’d never say nice things out loud. But deep down? He is absolutely one of the people who believes most in Hinata’s potential.

Vivek Parimi

I love that Ukai is shown as appreciating Atsumu as a former setter himself. I recall feeling emotional seeing that and hearing everyone appreciate Atsumu’s set and the purity of Atsumu saying "Because I am a setter"
