Simple question... if it was so easy to clear the beach, why did it take them so long?! Why not just get it done and then hang out longer if you want to?

Now The Jorney Begins !!!

I think it might jsut be a matter of age. She doesn't really feel the need to rush anything. From what we learn later, she could probably clean that beach with barely a second thought, but she's in no rush.

I mean from the montage we can see that they were kinda taking their time and just not in a rush. They were not staying in that village just for the job, it's more like the job gave them an excuse to hangout there.

Also, these anime reactions are kinda related to this episode, to me at least. Idk about everyone else but I don't really rewatch shows anymore, reactions kinda replaced that because seeing the joy or emotions of the reactor is like experiencing the show again, something that I don't really get from rewatching it alone!

For your question, yes the pace will be normal after this, it felt slow because the first 4 episode is released as a single package and is meant to be watched at 1 sitting and basically the prologue, after the first 4 epidode it will be normal pace wise

So I have some insights into this problem. It's not that Frieren (or myself for that matter) is messy; she just has a different cleanliness threshold from Fern's and other people's. From the outside, it looks like she's not cleaning up after herself but what it really means is that it's not messy enough or hasn't been messy for long enough for her to act. You COULD define that to mean "she's messy" even though the original connotation is that "she has no intention of cleaning up after herself" which is categorically not true. Why does this matter? It's a very keen observation of elves as eternal beings. One consequence of living forever is that you lose a sense of urgency, something we've seen portrayed in Frieren over and over and over again by this point. This is thematically in line with that. Sure, cleanliness is a different sensibility, and you might say it's a stretch to connect it to one's sense of time, but I say it makes sense because Frieren is capable of rushing to meet a deadline if it's important to her (which we also see in this episode).

Although the pace does pick up (with a few slow episodes here and there) I would still say Frieren is an anime that emphasizes the beauty in ordinary things, so it’s as it’s core very slice-of-lifey, but it does have a few arcs and some action

The pace picks up a bit, but Frieren is still very much a journey over destination anime, These first few episodes were released at once and were mainly there to setup the goal and give you an idea of what it’s about, it’ll introduce the antagonists and new characters as it goes on

Ahah, regarding the pace of Frieren. It's the first anime that I have not watched prior to watching it with your reactions. I did see actually exactly these first 4 episodes and while I loved the first 2. Episodes 3 and 4 felt a bit slow, so I dropped it indefinitely. But I think the slower pace fits quite well into the 1 episode per week format. Unlike say Attack on Titan, where I want to see the next episode immediately. :D

Adam the Prophet back again! And yes the pace picks up a little bit now but overall it's still relatively slow. Instead of being action-packed it's more of a sit-back-and-relax type of show, which I can understand if it's not as exciting for a reaction

Its going to get better with the progession, just the beginning is very slow.

I find it interesting that Adam thinks that it's odd that everyone are being altruistic towards Frieren and it should have been the other way around given her life span. But in saying that, you are applying the reasoning of a mortal being to someone who is immortal. From an immortal being perspective whats the point in trying to make someone elses life better when it will be so short anyway? It's as if us human would make a tremendous effort to make a butterfly's life better, it'll die in a couple of days anyway so whats the point? And thats exactly what Frieren said about taking an apprentice in the past or when she asked Flamme why she cared so much about a tree she will never see grow. And I think this is the whole theme of the show actually. We tend to view Frieren as someone gifted because she's basically immortal and we envy her for the endless possibilities that she has, when in fact the ones gifted in the show are the others who, tanks to the fact that they know they will die soon, are able to nurture meaningfull connections with others, make efforts to do something that will only benefit the next generation just because someone else has probably done it before for them too. And also appreciate the small things in life. It's the same concept that you see in Lord of the rings and in the Silmarillion. In the LOTR Lore the elves are immortal, powerful and almost allknowing, but it's said that humans are in fact the favourite sons of Iluvatar (wich is the deity who created the world) and to them he gave the most prescious gift wich is their mortality. All of Frieren companions know that, Flamme knew that and they want her to understand it cause in fact Frierien until now as actually lived a solitary life exactly because of how long she lives.

Dozy

At the end of the reaction Sarah mentioned that it was a bit tough reacting to Frieren due to the slow pace of the show, and I can totally see where she's coming from. I think the best way to watch/engage with Frieren is by enjoying the episodes for what they are and commentating on the referential subtext throughout each episode instead. There is A LOT of hidden subtext in scenes and interactions throughout Frieren. They often reference past moments in the show and interesting topics in real life too if you look deeper into the meaning of what they're getting at. The pacing IS quite slow and remains so throughout the entire season, but I actually think that's what makes it so excellent; It gives the watcher time to breath and engage with the ideas that it's playing with.

Marshal Childress

Yeah, I wouldn't look forward to faster pacing. I think the whole point is to slow down and enjoy the company of others enjoying the beauty of the show.
