"For them, words are a means of deceiving humans..." 👀 Verrrrry interesting. I like where this is going.

Fern and Stark are around 17/18 at this point in the story

J-or-Dan

Fern is at most 16 and I think for most people when they meet frieren that they take a stance of oh you kind of look like the mage in Himmel's party. That plus the fact that Frieren herself doesn't ever seem to make a big deal about it can add to that.

bukuwawa

yes, this. the time measure that pops occasionally is from Himmel's death, and Frieren first met Fern as a child 20 years after that. So "28 years after the death of Himmel the Hero" puts Fern around 17ish.

The way I think about frierens view on demons is imagine a shark with chatgpt in its brain. It only wants to live, something that is a very light spoiler youll learn in the next episode or 2, and kill/devour humans. Any response it makes is just the response it thinks will give it those things in that order.

Yay, love this arc, so fun. Some little notes as they come up: Frieren and the heroes' party defeated the demon king 80 years ago. For perspective, 80 years ago from this year was 1945, the end of WWII. That's a really long time , so I don't blame anyone we see that doesn't recognize Frieren. Granted, it's a little grating that the old guy is talking to Frieren in front of a statue of her, but you also don't expect to see a war hero spoken about in stories on your way home, you know. Most people now are born into an era where the demon king was already dead and most places live in relative peace. Lugner, the long-haired demon, has the same voice as Victor from Yuri on Ice! I love the little flashback of the heroes' party. We see there that Frieren has the same opinion, going to kill the demon before the village chief and Himmel stops her. It shows us that it wasn't a time that changed Frieren's opinion about demons to be more negative. I've always interpreted it as remembering the last time she was proven right in her assessment of demons. Without spoiling much or getting too much into it, I must point out that Frieren did not carry the Heroes' party on her back. They were all equals.

I am DYING with how many times Sarah had to suffer and correct Adam 😂🤣

It's funny how in modern media, the idea of "demons being evil" has become the subversion — since demons are now so often portrayed as good, misunderstood, or just a different kind of human. That’s why it’s really refreshing to see more traditional, classic demons. They have a completely different set of values that fundamentally clash with humanity itself Of course, "evil" is in quotes here, because as Adam pointed out, it’s not really about good or bad. These demons just can’t coexist with humans (elves, dwarves, etc) because of their very nature Also, funny bit of foreshadowing from the middle of the episode to the end: Lügner means “liar” in German 😅 Thank you for reaction!

The only thing funnier than "seclusive" indeed being a word, is Adam using it perfectly lol.

I’m actually dying from Adam this episode I cantttt, great reaction guys

I do see it as an important distinction to make, which I think you both already see anyway with regard to the demon child, but just that while what occured in the flashback did happen because of the demon's misunderstanding, that misunderstanding was not a moral one. The demon child believed that the mother's desire to kill it could be resolved by replacing the child, but that's not the same as thinking and understanding that it has committed a moral offense and then concluding in error that providing a new daughter would right that wrong.

Such an interesting take from the show. Being able to speak and being able to communicate with one other are two different things. Even among humans communication is difficult enough. We speak the same language, have the same basic needs and live in the same way (in families and communities), but often don't have enough common ground to coexist peacefully. What connects or alienates human societies is a share of culture. Demons in Frieren don't have societies or culture, they are just psychopathic predators motivated 100% by immediate personal gain. Wild beasts that immitate human speach is the correct description.

Lügner, the name of the demon group leader, is the german word for liar by the way.

Yes, the seclusive content is here! It looks like the demons stole Adam’s ability to speak this time around. Introducing demons and showing how badass Frieren is. Yes. So much yes.

I think shared culture makes it easier, but I also think anything that gives you common ground as a window to coexist will serve. I have been to other countries with different cultures and language, and I have been able to laugh and gotten help from people without sharing an ounce of language and culture just because of shared experience or human situations that resonate, and I am not even that social of a person. I once tripped with my mom, who was in a wheelchair at the time, in Japan and 3 japanese guys came to help us. They got confused because I was laughing as I was trying to lift my mom, but once they saw my mom was also laughing to they started laughing while helping us up. In my defense, we tripped because my mom had a bad idea and I implemented it on her request. She thought I didnt need to slow down on a small bump and to speed up. I figured it was going to end up bad, but I decided to try her idea out and we ended up in the floor, no injuries. I thought the whole thing ridiculous and hilarious so I had to laugh. Maybe because I am less social my treshold is lower of what is a good social connection 🤔. My point is, I dont think culture differences is necessarily an issue. Maybe clashing values or clashing survival needs?
