I absolutely love the hamburger steak scene. To take something so simple that does so much for so many characters. Of course, what it means for Eisen, making it for everyone and that beautiful dialogue 'everyone who works hard is a warrior', and him making it to Stark, recognizing his effort *also this is another instance where we see Eisen failing to communicate his feelings properly with Stark* Then, what it means for Frieren and her progress, doing something like that for Stark's birthday. What it means for Stoltz, who despite what his own father and everyone else in the family seemed to think about him, recognized his brother's effort. And of course, what it means for Stark. I just love how many connections you can draw from a hamburger steak of all things ❤️😭

Also, this is just my take on it, but Stark not even trying to pick up the Hero's Sword is perfect to me. There is no such thing as 'a fake hero' or 'a chosen hero'. Himmel was unable to pick up the sword, but he defeated the demon king and saved the world alongside his friends. Whether Stark becomes a great hero or not, is not something for an ancient sword buried on a stone to determine. It's up to him. He doesn't need to pull a legendary, mystical sword to validate him and be a true hero. A replica worked just fine for Himmel. Now, as for Stark not even trying to pull the sword, I think you can look at it from two sides. One, he has such low self confidence and thinks so little of himself, he didn't even try to pull the sword because, if Himmel couldn't, why could he? Or perhaps, even if he was able to pull the sword, that'd be like invalidating Himmel in a way. So he is the Chosen Hero, then? Almost as if proving Himmel was a fake hero in the end. Perhaps it's a little bit of both. In the end, I think what's being said is that you don't need a magical, legendary sword to be the hero. It was Himmel, Eisen, Frieren and Heiter who saved the world, and they didn't need a mythical item or prophecy to do so. I also find it very heartwarming that upon viewing the Hero's Sword, Stark's mind immediately flashes to his brother as well.

Sarah lmaooo Fern is a year younger than Stark. She's oly 17

Travis

Lol they about the same age, if not I believe Fern is younger by a couple months or a year at most

FullHeart

Its actualy wild to me Adam hasnt seen that Sword in the Stone movie because he seems like the type that would have loved it. It's older than Sarah thought though - it came out in the 60s

Flor Chieli

Loved your reaction, guys, and congrats on your bebe! :D <3

For me it's the context that, like, Stark isn't *just* a coward. He runs from conflict because he was explicitly told to, so that fear is the last gift his brother gave him - that need to survive. It also means that any time he faces his fears to fight he's putting the importance of that ahead of himself and his brother.

bukuwawa

That ring shows frieren pauses to look at in her suitcase shows up three times this season. this is the second.

Kosumi

I believe Stark did remember that his brother told him to run, maybe not the exact words, but thought he was told to run because he was too weak or cowardly. I think learning about the meaning of the Hamburg steak let Stark understand the real reason Stoltz had him run away.

I think I cried harder on this second watch with you guys. To me, the little flash back scene with Stark staring at the Hero's sword is him remembering and honoring his brother. He was thinking that his brother might be able to pull out that sword if Stoltz is still alive😭That's why he didn't even try to do it himself.

Sam B

I think you nailed it. Stupid awkward Eisen, if he would have filled Stark in on the meaning of the steaks, he may have let go of some baggage earlier. Love Eisen still though haha.

Sam B

My take was that he didn't try to pull the sword because he was scared of what it would mean if he actually succeeded. He ran from that as he felt he has been doing with other things all his life.

This is one of my favorite episodes. 🩷 Stark's backstory is so great. I think I cry every single time I watch it. 🥹

Sarah's sWord is my favorite this episode. jk

Himmel wasn’t chosen to be a hero — he chose to be one. In my opinion, that’s the main message of the first half of the episode. Because of that, I actually think it would be more meaningful if Stark decided not to pull the sword from the stone, since you don’t need validation from a rusty sword to become a better version of yourself :) Also, I feel like Fern might secretly be the biggest perv of the group! She’s always accusing others of being perverts, but she’s the one who used the clothing spell to see both Frieren and Stark naked — and then poured the clothes-dissolving potion on Frieren instead of just pouring it on the ground! 😅 And sorry for the small correction — there’s no way Fern is in her thirties. She’s about half a year younger than Stark, so she’s around 17, almost 18. She often seems the most mature because she took care of Heiter in his old age and now looks after Frieren, who doesn’t really bother with everyday life. But deep down, she’s still just a teenage girl :) When I was little, I used to rewatch the tape of The Sword in the Stone over and over again, so Sarah’s words really hit me with nostalgia 😅 Thank you so much for sharing your reaction!

so frieran falling asleep serves as a couple things: - stark passed out in the cold because he’s a human teenage boy who has never experienced this weather before. but by frieran passing out, it shows that she, despite her long life and myriad experiences, ends up doing the same thing. i.e, to show the severity of the weather. but then when fern asks her if she can walk, frieran says no and allows her 17 year old student to carry her instead of weathering the storm herself. it’s a parallel to say that she’s acting like a child. stark even tells her after she commands him to kill the lord and could’ve been killed by it jumping down on him, “can’t you treat people better?” - it shows that stark is a good-natured, pure intentioned guy who earnestly wanted to help frieren. he even offers to take her so that fern can rest. - fern repeatedly refuses to let stark take frieren because she thinks that he would take advantage of the situation for self-serving means. but when she calls him a pervert he’s totally floored and confused because the thought didn’t even cross his mind. tldr; fern is protective, mature, and cautious, stark is naïve, innocent, and virtuous, and frieren is selfish, childish, and kind of lazy (calling back to a few episodes before, fern, who was still a child, literally had to dress her every day, feed her, and wake her).

i love frieren though pls don’t misunderstand 😭 that’s my goat

I think he simply didn't believe himself worthy. At this point he thinks himself weak and useless and worthless. He looks at the sword and thinks of his brother and my take is her thought "maybe HE was worthy, but definitely not me" and never tries.

Frieren, and Fern, both sometimes fall asleep because they are both constantly suppressing their mana all the time. It get's tiring at times and this is why both of them sometimes just fall asleep at seemingly random times. And Fern isn't in her thirties she is 18 years old in this episode. Remember that time is counted using the years after Himmel's death so it's *NOT* 29 years since Frieren has met Fern. Instead it's 29 years since Himmel death. Which means that Frieren met Fern when she was 9 years old, 20 years after Himmel's death, and so that would make her 18 years old in this episode. In fact, if you go back to episode 7 Stark made a comment about not liking how Fern calls him "Mr. Stark" and how its weird for her to call him "Mr. Stark" because they are both the same age. P.S. When you think about it the adventurers that saved the world from the Demon King were a party that consisted of a fake hero, a corrupt priest, a cowardly warrior and a apathetic mage.

Drift3r

Actually she's 18 in this episode. Freiren first met her when she was 9 and it was 20 years after Himmel's death. So in this episode it's 29 years after Himmel's death so that would make her 18 years old.

I heard baby voice.. is that your son/daughte??

So, when Flamme tells Frieren to surprised her manager for the first time she asks how long does she need to do it becase just after a minute she says it is becoming tiring. She has been doing it non stop for a thousands years. That's why she is so tired. We also met Kraft who said Frieren is still young. She may be younger than Fern at this point as far as elf years compared to human years. Similar to dog years are in the real world. Even with that said. I believe if Frieren or any elf can live forever if they don't die from a several sickness, and acident, or death in a battle.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Even if Stark wanted to try to pull the sword. He could not get into the cave. There is a barrier stopping anything from entering.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Stark is around the same age as Fern. He is a bit older. Ferns is 17 at this point

Adam Schulz

Haha yeah, well are trying g to figure out how to best react with a new little one in the house

I actually have The Sword in the Stone on VHS! 😂 Even on a rewatch, this episode still got me teary eyed. When Stark was sitting in front of the hero's sword, he had flashbacks of his brother, and when he was thinking of his brother, he had flashbacks of the sword because for Stark, the true hero has always been his older brother 😭 And I actually love the fact that Stark didn't try to pull the sword - I feel like that would have ruined all the lessons they were teaching us this episode: that what matters is your effort and actions; you don't need the "Hero's Sword" to be a hero. If Stark had pulled it, it would have felt like a slap in the face to both Himmel's and his brother's memories, like saying they weren't good enough. Also Frieren met Fern "20 years after the death of Himmel" and we're currently at 29 years after his death so Fern's also only in her late teens - it has been years but it hasn't been THAT long lol

Maximilian Sauer

The baby in the background 😍 congrats again! And I was extra surprised to hear it because you don't seem tired at all. I really wouldn't be able to tell that you're fresh parents, usually they're Frieren levels of tired. Also, I just love how every episode contains multiple moments and lines that you could put on a poster and quote all the time. It's so slow sometimes but damn is it deep and does it have many moments that make one think and/or reflect and learn.

Stonewall Hackson

A “fake” hero A “disgraceful” mage A “corrupt” priest A “cowardly” warrior The party that defeated the demon king. I think one of the messages of this show, particularly this episode, is you define your own life, no one else does. It doesn’t matter what labels people put on you, only how you choose to act will ultimately decide what you are.

Firstly congratulations on your baby!! So happy for yall!! I just wanted to say I love the symbolism in jewelry in this show. There’s an immense amount of sentiment in all jewelry given or worn in this story, we’ve seen some of it already. Fern’s butterfly hairpiece from Frieren, how Frieren wears flamme’s earrings, and now fern gifting stark a bracelet! I hope yall noticed jewelry in all its subtleties going forward :)

I'm pretty sure Fern is younger then Stark. I think she's 17, she's still pretty young. I do love this episode and the insights in it. Makes me tear up. Thanks for sharing!

About not getting too emotional in the first episodes. Go back and rewatch the first two episodes. The hit completely different after you have gotten to know the Hero's party.
