I love a birthday, and I love how Frieren was the one who knew what day it was, and was ready to celebrate 🥹🤩 Maybe not the gift I'd select, but she's making progress haha

The lessons in these episodes are sooooo good, and I think we will be seeing the sword again...

Fern and Stark are near or of the same age! They're around 18 in this episode I believe.

Don't let Fern's maturity fool you, she's actually the youngest member of this little party XD Loved this episode from start to finish, I could literally spend an hour gushing about every single scene.

there’s a theory within the fandom that frieren is always tired/sleepy because she’s always suppressing her mana! so rather than being near her end, she’s most likely chronically tired from the centuries of constant exertion

I don't think the sword is going to show up again or at least not based on the meaning of the episode. One of the points they were trying to make is that you are a hero because of your actions and not because of things like being chosen by the Hero sword. Himmel saved the world with a Replica sword. Someone made a comparison between the replica sword and the Hero sword. In Himmel's funneral, the replica sword looked shiny and well-mantained. Meanwhile, the "Hero Sword" looked rusty and not only that, it wad causing problems to the people by attracting monsters. This episode is really trying to tell you that the Hero Sword doesn't matter, that's why we don't get a scene of Stark trying to pull the sword, because there's no point to it. He already has proof that he is a true warrior.

I think with the context of the show after you have watched most of it makes the flashbacks earlier on hit you harder. Sarah might struggle more so on a re watch haha

Frieren is such an interesting series in that many, many people when they start watching it (and even some who finish it) don't notice how much impact the series has on them until the end, or even some time after finishing it. I would bet that you would cry more with repeat viewings after finishing the series and having processed some of the impact it had on you. The amount of valuable, non-fiction life advice that this series has is impressive. I am actually amazed that this was written by one person, who I assume is young due to being a mangaka. It truly is a gift to be able to translate feelings so well to communicate them and impact others. Doing this so many times, on so many core life aspects, is like a gift to the power of another gift. The fact of Himmel not being able to pull the sword, being told in the future when we know he saved the world, is amazing story telling by itself. Then we compound this with a line highlighting that people build on heroes' legacies so much, that nothing is left of the original. In most other stories, this would seem like trying to tick all the boxes of "impactful story lessons", but the way it is told here, it is both seamless and effective. Stark's brother not caring about the cape, and nurturing Stark without (to our knowledge) seeing him as particularly special in the "anime protagonist" way, also takes focus from the "chosen ones" to show the value in the average ones. Of course, we do know how strong Stark is now, but we didn't see any indication in the flashbacks that his brother noticed something in him aside from persistence. He just seemed to be genuinely trying to help his brother, without expectations. As a side note, one other anime that is not fantasy, but hit many people hard as well, is "A Place Further Than The Universe".

I think that Stark didn't try to pull the sword because he doesn't feel like he is a hero. Watching the sword, Stark has a brief flashback of his older brother, who he considers the epitome of a true hero, so he probably feels like he can't compare to someone like him. At least, that's how I've interpreted that scene.

Fern is only 17 I believe

“Fake Hero” Himmel the fake hero who wields a fake Hero’s Sword. But he becomes The Hero because he believes in himself and he acts heroically. While Stark feels that he is a fake hero, yet he acts heroically.

"A Place Further Than the Universe" is so good. Agreed with your other comments
