I love this athlete's pledge!! Is this a real thing they do in figure skating in general or is it Japan-specific? I'm obsessed.

Best girl has entered the chat. Let's just say that. Not saying who cause it'll be a while to get there. But great start to the season

This isn’t really something unique to figure skating. It’s actually a very familiar part of Japanese sports culture! In Japan, we have a school sports festival called undokai, which is held once a year and involves the entire school. Students spend about two months preparing for it, practicing sports events, dances, cheers, and so on. There’s always an athletes’ oath during the opening ceremony. A student representative usually pledges to compete fairly and honorably in the spirit of sportsmanship. They also talk about how everyone has worked together toward the event and express gratitude for being able to hold it. This kind of sports festival is a normal part of school life in Japan from elementary school through high school. So when I saw the oath in Medalist, it didn’t feel particularly “figure skating” to me—it felt very familiar, like something I’ve seen since I was a kid. 😂

Thanks for the insight. I had never seen this before.
