This is the regional trial for the All-Japan Figure Skating Championships. The top five skaters per group from each region qualify for the national finals. Ema competes in another region; she took skating grades here with Inori only due to schedule conflicts. Inori and Hikaru are both from the Chubu region, and Hikaru is the leading elite skater in local Junior A. The championship is divided into Junior A, Junior B, Youth and Senior groups. The elder female skaters in this episode belong to the Youth and Senior divisions, separate from Inori’s group. A common unwritten rule in figure skating: the first performer often gets suppressed artistic scores to avoid score inflation, which would disrupt later judging. Starting first is stressful and unfair; skaters have to perform exceptionally well to reach their regular level. Drawing a near-last spot like Inori is also disadvantageous. Ice gets cleaned only after a full group finishes skating. Later competitors face rough ice full of pits and scratches, which can easily spoil their whole routine.

i didn't expect to tear up in this episode, because i did not when i watched it the first time, loved Sarah's comment on coaches not being acknowledged most of the time since they work behind the scenes, i saw Adam misty eyed too! haha, anyway, Inori is wildin out here already on episode 1!
