EDIT 3 (Feb 23): Another update on this one with a mumbly verse! (Never Go Home 4.wav) Lemme know thoughts :)

EDIT 2: New version uploaded with different drums and a few other additions. Let me know what you think! (Never go Home 3)

Hey gang,

New demo here - been experimenting with strings, guitar harmonics and different types of vibes. Lyrics are just blah blah atm but the vibe is there. Also new youtube video almost done! Yahoo

Uploading to patreon doesn't work again so uploading as attachment. Gonna report it to em! Sorry about that

EDIT: Already switched out the drums! Agreed they were a bit much.

Comments

Cas

I really like the orchestral feel of this one. It adds to the emotional impact. New YouTube video soon! Outlook!

Airyckah Lane

Oohhhh I love this…. I do wish the drums didn’t come in as strong at the beginning.. it was kinda jarring from all that buildup and kinda seemed out of place with the entrance of the words… like they were a bit too early maybe… and it feels like it was about to lead into a prechorus/hook with lots of longer helps words before a faster chorus… just saying how my brain kinda kept it rolling… I wanted more

naschpanda

You had me in the first few seconds but as soon as the drums set in it kinda killed the vibe for me.. I don't like that hard cut from beautiful and soft to suddenly super busy. But that's just my personal preference.

emy

Favourite thing is that you are writing for strings!! 🎻 Also the idea that home = people resonates strongly. Looking forward to where this goes cause i feel like it’ll be super moving. Thanks as always for sharing yer stuff with us

Mari

I'm really into this. I think maybe the drums need to be slowed a bit, but it's pretty solid so far 💛

Roomie
>>102538836

Yeah transitions are usually the last thing I work on in songs, like to get the big parts done first. So imagine like, a drum fill and some kinda sweep I guess lmao

xtina 🖤

i think it’s beautiful, also like the lyrics so far

naschpanda
>>102538836

Alright, thanks for the clarification. I'm sure you're making the best out of it 😊

CK DeP

So far, I'm absolutely enjoying these types of demos, etc. Amazing job Joel! Yayy, can't wait to see what you have planned for vids!🙂🎵🎸💖

loonylovesgood

Welp. This is right up my alley. I’m a sucker for strings. This might be my favourite of your demos so far! P.S. Super excited for the video. It’s been very strange not seeing any Roomie uploads in my feed. ☺️

CK DeP

Idk if I've said this in comments on Patreon before but you can certainly check or correct me if I'm wrong or have said this before, but how is your song "Early Days" - as in like is that the "final , finished" look or are you still in progress with it , is it going to be a full length release/version, final cut for like Spotify or something or keep it as is on Patreon? Loving it btws! I kinda wanna do an analyzing of it like what the chords are/is and how it's made, kinda like last year you showed us on how your track to one of your "new" but unreleased songs was on a stream or something and posted on here on how u broke each part down, tbh I thought that was spectacular! Haha yeah, I'm a music nerd too Joel haha! Keep it up!😂🎵🎼👍🎸

CK DeP

Digging this by far! Even if it's not an downloadable version, huhh kinda weird how it's doing that lol has that ever happened with your Demos, songs , etc. For Patreon? Or is their a new update perhaps?

JustSomeJK

I liked it a lot, very beautiful start 💙 For some reason the vibe and the lyrics led my brain to thinking about someone loosing a parent and that the childhood home doesn't feel like home anymore or something and that got me really sad. But yeah very nice and a little bit different with the strings than what we have heard before 😊

CK DeP

Kinda lame question to ask this but going to anyways lol , but how is your song "Don't Know What I'm Doing" "So Selfish" "Bit By Bit" going? Is their going to be fuller versions or final cuts for those and many other demos you have? Like for Spotify, YouTube, etc. Or just keep it on here on Patreon? Whatever you choose, I'll still love & support no matter what!👍🙂😂

CK DeP

I have a funny feelings that this video you're talking about, ... if I may guess it, is that the voices video that you have "promised" us? Or did work on with Jonas & August awhile back? Orrrr... a songs that doesn't work together but do or something. Am I close?😂

Becky Lorion

This is very much my kind of music. Love the softness of the strings but still manages to sound up beat. Can’t wait to see where this one goes!

Lisa Jasperson

Backtrack is totally my vibe I love this

Melinda Young

That is a nice chill vibe. I like it

Courtney Walker

Love how chill the vibe is on it! Definitely something I'd turn on when just relaxing at home or while driving.

CK DeP

Tbh I do feel like I could/can just put this song on and just relax and do my yoga, exercise, writing meditation/methods (for stress free energy, environment, etc.) Plus I feel this one lol But those drums tho lol I mean don't get me wrong love it , ik ur still experimenting with sounds, etc. Which is completely fine , but I felt like it was kinda weird, a bit too much but yet I like it at the same time.😂🎵🎼🎸🎹🎶 This kinda reminds me of when you made your "Breathe" song & video using those aero drums, btws - do you still have or own a pair of anything aerodrums or anything, or did you lose them or not pack them for L.A or did you simply gave them away. I have always wondered what's like to play "drums" with those but without having actual drums lol haha , idk if they still make or sell them?

Misty Gerkman

Very chill! I like it so far 💕

Helga 🦊

Overall I like this demo, I love strings and guitar harmonics 🧡 But I can’t believe I’m saying that but I don’t like that drum beat that is too much in my ears and absolutely distracts me from a song 😑 (I’m huge fan of drums but not this one, sorry)

CK DeP

Really taking a toll for those lyrics mannn, lol tho I kinda keep getting lost in those drums but idk maybe I'm soooo used to it so my mind doesn't hear them "as loud or annoying" to me imo! But yeahhh, digging both lyrics, storytelling vibes , beats, absolutely killin it Joel! Gosh, I didn't even know that there's MANY songs that you've written that I seem to really enjoy, jam with, relate or just put on and relax , chillin in my room or doing chores or whatever I'm doing your music always helps me. Okay, I know I'm started to sound a bit off , weird or clingy/cliche like but it's the truth 😂🎶 Keep it up Joel!!🙂👌

Mari
>>102539484

Joel, come here, I'm gonna let you in on something. Next time? Just don't. 🫠🤦‍♀️

CK DeP

Okay now this is definitely a song I can just play in car or whatever, and maybe have my cat or dog dance with me (coz I have no dancing buddy) 😂😂😂 Unless there's anyone here who would like to volunteer in being my dancing buddy for this song?😂🎵🎼🎶 Overall - Amazing job Joel!

Alle Engdahl

Save some talent for the rest of us man. 🤣 Another great demo, excited for the final version! 😍

Aubrey Danielle

That musical intro bit is really nice! Hope you’re doing well 😊

Trushakes

It's giving me nostalgic vibes 😉

Helga 🦊

And this comment won’t be about the demo but it’s just pure curiosity here…How many unfinished demo do you have? And do you prefer to finish one song and go to the other demo or you like to work simultaneously on couple of demos? 🤔 You’ll make me happy if you find time to answer this one 😄

Mari
>>102541479

From the timeline of his previous songs, it seemed he was working on Bit by Bit and I Don't Know What I'm Doing simultaneously, so I would assume he bounces around from each song.

Annelies

Love the relaxed vibe. Great to hear so many different styles of songs. 😀

Ave Castruita

Smooth! I really like it, good job.

Clair (Teampanda)

Do you write lyrics and then sit on them until you come up with a melody or do you do it the other way round? You have such different vibes across the melodies that I can see you searching through lyric notes to see if you have something that fits. I used to write Christian songs for school/church and I always found it easy to come up with a melody after, but I always figured that was because the lyrics were samey (same lyrical theme).

Magalie Leplus

That's awesome. It's somehow a bit different i think and the drums got me for sure.

Sarah

I love the strings, but I'm not sure about the drums.

Elke

Chill vibe, I like it! 😊 Big fan of the strings.

Calize

Loving the summer vibe

Dorie

You’re killing me with this. The vibe and your vocals are really hitting me. Loving the strings. Glad you’re pulling back on the drums. Can’t wait to hear more of this one.

Elke

Drums in v3 are a better fit indeed ☺️

Calize

I like it when the strings start.. I feel the intro is too long though, I probably wouldn’t get to the song with my attention span 😅

Becky Lorion

Really liked it before but this is even better!

JustSomeJK

New version with softer beat sounded good 😊

Jen 🦙

New softer drums definitely more fitting, it's giving summer drive vibes 🙂 Also, that choice of key and soundscape hits right in the feels!

Mari

YASSSS the updated one is so, so much better. #Nailedit 💛

Hayley

Maaan, your vocals are beautiful in this 😍 Honestly though...I'm not mad keen on the lyrics so far...not trying to be negative or rude, and it sounds a bit like a contradiction but it's just not my kind of vibe...That said I would be really interested to see where you take it lyrically, I think there's a couple of directions it could go in like maybe make it a more upbeat song with 'never going home/seeing you again' being a positive thing like moving on/being better, that sort of thing rather than it being about loss or heartbreak? Just a thought...I'm off to work now myself, feel free to come at me and tell me how to do my job better 😂😂 xx

Melinda Young

Wow that made such a difference. Sounds so good

CK DeP

Yayy, thanks so much Joel for making two versions of this song! Now I can hear the differences between these two!👍🎵🎼🎶😂 Why does the backing track sound alot like an morning alarm going off or is that just me? 😂😂💗

MediocreAtBest

I'm late to the party as per usual. Listening to both versions, v3 is good though the instrumental is still a bit overpowering in some way to me. Pretty song, interested to see where this one goes, bit of a different vibe from the other demos. Also, new YouTube video in the near future!?!? Yes! :D

Cas

Better. It is fun to learn how you change the music and how it affects the vibe.

Brandt

This is so Nice, melancholic and dreamy 😊. And I think the new version is better.

Dannielle O'Neill

What a nice way to wake up 🥰. (Missed out by attempting to sleep. Lol) It would definitely be nice to have something soft in the playlist, for sure. Definitely a good call on the drums. Excited for the new video! Hope you're doing well.

Amber

I really enjoy the vibe of this song! I am loving the demos you have been posting, they are all really good and I’m loving how unique each are :)

Airyckah Lane

That’s the build I was talking about!!! Second verse going to build up more.. and then drop to something slower/emotional for the bridge? Or keeping second verse similar and have the bridge be more explosive?

Aubrey Danielle

WOAH! The update is so beautiful. A little haunting too 😊 love it 👏🏻

Dorie

Wow. This is beautiful. 😘

Becky Lorion

This just keeps getting better and better…such a dreamy feel to it ☺️

CK DeP

EDIT: haha I should've commented on when it was 3 versions haha! Overall again amazing, l love the different ones! But the instrumental to me imo it really speaks to me, aswell for the lyrics, story telling I enjoy it too.🎶💗🎼🎵👍🥰

emy

Weird question but sir have you been listening to country music? 🤠 There’s something country about these melodies. And that little bit of twang in the way you sing ‘home’ is real satisfying too

Arinion

Sorry but the beginning of the song sounds like those melodies that are pre saved in phones. I am not trying to bring the song down but I wasn't sure I played/downloaded the correct song until the singing came in 😅

Annelies

I love how the dreamy vibe still remains in all versions 🧚‍♀️Also funny to really hear how you start writing a song , I mean with the few real words in the mumbling 😆 (I have just recently become a patreon member)

Mari

Damn this is a proper Simlish hit you got here sul sul 🤭

Clair (Teampanda)

Hey Joel Boel, I love the strings, it makes the verse lyrics more profound but I don't like the beat of the song. I think it needs proper percussion to give it a heart beat, could it be toned down with a drum brush style beat? Why do I always have to go against the grain?? 😔 Sorry x

Roomie
>>102602236

Thanks! This is actually quite uncommon for me, I usually start with real lyrics but I made a conscious effort with this one to prioritize vibe instead of melody/lyrics initially. That's also why the melody is quite a bit lower in registry than other songs I'm making, since the key was set by what the instruments sounded good in, not my voice. I like how it pulled out a different vibe in the singing too!

Roomie
>>102601256

I do like some country! Good catch! I think the kind of double-tempo vibe also reminds of country a lot, I even added some folk/country guitars quietly in the background. Makes me think of the avicii/aloe black country songs in the 2010s a little bit, though I'm not headed into that EDM territory as much

Roomie
>>102602571

I understand the idea, but the beat to me is the main thing at the moment making this sound relatively current and not like something that could have come out in 2005 (ie something like"3x5" by john mayer that has a somewhat similar vibe and a brush beat). Nothing wrong with that but there's so much music already made with that instrumentation, I wanna try and fuse stuff more

Clair (Teampanda)
>>102602571

I get that, thank you for explaining your logic. I think I just find it jarring because I hear it above everything else, but as the song develops it will melt in well with everything else. Also I think you may have called me out for being old ha ha ☺️ 🤣

Bookdragon 43

Love the song!! 💟💗I can't wait for the new video on yt👍👏🎶

MediocreAtBest

v4 mumbly verse is what happens when you've only heard a song once but it came on the radio and you really wanna sing along anyways XD It reminds me of something in a way that a dubstep drop might be coming. Enjoying the updates and seeing (hearing) the progression.

Dannielle O'Neill

Definitely enjoying this one. Now, the weird thing (bc I always have one to share lol)...it has "bubble bath and candle by oneself" vibes. Do with that information what you will. Lol

Lianne Conroy

I prefer your voice in this lower registry. Right now this sounds like someone listened to a song twice and got the chorus and tried to do a cover and hide the fact that they don't know the words but I kind of love it and I know it'll sound better once it's a real song

Cas

Upside down song. Verse is more catchy than chorus. Time to work on lyrics. How do you know how to have the lyrics hit properly when the !usic demands it unless you do both together? I'm obviously not a music nerd! Keep improving it. I like it!

Gayle

The #4 with ascending/descending strings is really a good contrast to country vibe. Mumbling is a little distracting, but the melody is catchy. Thank you for sharing. The vibe is constant throughout out. The added up and down is just really nice.

Amberlash

I like it, definitely would be interested to see where it goes. It's actually giving me just a little bit of an oldschool vibe like "The Boys Of Summer" by Don Henley. I really like your vocal tone at the beginning, sounds very honestly sad/longing. Good job so far. :)

Gayle

Joel, I had to relisten. There is something so complex and just on the tip of my tongue. This is just, it really floats on a level above all the other songs right now. Not so much country, forgive that quick assessment. It is a symphony of breathing, anxiousness, nervousness, and I can almost hear the words you are trying not to say. The more I hear this, the more beautiful it sounds to me. You are so amazing, I've been waiting for this kind of music from you. You are delivering, a meal to the senses. I would love more. There's no such thing as too good to be true. There's always a catch. I'm not perfect. My running joke is, "I don't know anything". One night at band camp ....

JustSomeJK

This just keeps on getting better and better! I love this song already 🎶🥰 Your vocals on the parts that u aren't mumbling are awesome 🤩 Such a sing along song and I like the sad soundscape it creates. In my head there's a music video for this song where someone is driving a car and wiping tears 😅 I hope you decide to finish this one, can't wait to hear the rest of the lyrics 🙂I hope u are ok and have a great weekend 🙂💙

loonylovesgood

I think I’m in the minority but the first version you uploaded is still my favourite. Overall, I really like the song, I’m interested to see how it turns out!

naschpanda

This last update is amazing. I really really like it. The build-up is so much better, the drums are not too distracting. Also love the melodies and the soft tone of your voice. Can't wait to hear this with proper lyrics 😊

Jen 🦙

Yeeees, this is a vibe and a half! 👏🏻 Definitely something I'd listen to when I want to empathically reflect on life and allow myself to feel everything 🙂

JustSomeJK
>>102620865

😂 Yeah that's a good joke Aubrey 🤣 I want Joel to succeed in his career, so I'm pretty sure there is way better people to give him advice on music videos than me 😅😂 But I appreciate your supportive thoughts ☺️

Adina

Yay a softer voice song, it sounds really good, hope you keep working on it

Calize

Edit 3: the melodies are on fire! 🔥🔥🔥 I miss the drums that come in on the first chorus now and from the verse it all sounds a bit the same. Maybe fall back in intensity in the verse en keep the chorus as focal point?
