Hi everyone!

This week, I'm looking at the beautiful song Sin City by the Flying Burrito Brothers. I begin by looking at the basic acoustic chords, which are pretty straightforward. Then I get into my own arrangement where I translate the vocal harmonies onto the guitar, and also do a bit of country soloing.

I had a lot of fun putting this one together - hope you find the video helpful and interesting!

Below you can find a basic chord/lyric chart, and also a more detailed tab of my arrangement. On the backing track the arrangement is what I play at the start of the video - intro/verse/chorus/solo.

Chuck

great tune! i don't see the tab, etc. here though.

Lol, on the shredding. I prefer the melodic country any day

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, think I agree. I know I gently mock shredders from time to time, but when it's done well, with a bit of style I think shredding has its place!

Thanks Chuck. Tab hould be there attached under the post - it's showing up on my computer, but if you're having problems let me know and I'll try and help further!

Chuck

It's there now. Thank you. I really enjoy your lessons/videos.

Roberto Carraro

love the song, the whole album and your rendition too!

Thank you, Adrian, for a beautiful take on this tune. And for including the volume swell pedal steel licks!

PS, It's not my day-to-day thing, but I'd totally take a shred lesson, especially if its over something nice and heavy like the riff in Darkthrone's Quintessence or more Sabbath-ish

Charles Cluck

Another great song choice - I just wish I could learn as rapidly as you churn out these stellar lessons ... I'll never get caught up.

With all due respect to those who dig shred metal, my vote is for no standard shredding there's a ton of that on the net already although I'm sure you'd bring something new to the table. Taste is what is missing from net based guitar instruction—great and varied taste is what makes you awesome. Your choices and instruction always brings unexpected and insightful discovery, so if you go shred, make it left of the dial! I for one will probably skip a Malmsteen, Vai or Satriani vid. Can't get enough of what you do now however, you be you! If you had to go shredded solo, I'd very much go for more Johnny Greenwood, perhaps some of his solos could sneak in the door as "shred"? ;) Queen of Stone Age Little Sister? Fripp's solo on Bowie's Fashion? Mike McCready Evenflow or Alive? Tom Morello? Or a 70's left turn...Bill Nelson's No Trains to Heaven? Blue Oyster Cult's Dominance & Submission end solo? Bowie/Ronson Moonage Daydream? I'd even be into Van Halen's Panama solo, the tune is cool if trad rock solo is the thing. It's even got a little bit of tapping in there if you wanted to introduce that to the tribe.

Adrian, your musical taste is amazing. I don't know where else I'd get Bowie, Iggy Pop and then Sin City(one of my favorite all time songs.) I saw the Burritos play this at the Whiskey A Go Go right when they released this album. (I was 19 at the time and 74 now) They were warming up for Van Morrison. I hadn't heard of them, but when I saw Hillman and Parson walk on stage I knew I was in for a treat. I saw them a few weeks later at a small club in San Diego. Nobody knew who they were and their were literally about 25 people there but they played a great set and took requests. Thank for the great lessons.

Christopher Houlihan

Thank you for this, one of my all-time favorites - and that Tele sounds like heaven.

There goes the weekend. Again! This is my kind of shredding. Thanks Adrian.

Great stuff. Looking forward to learning this. I think I read somewhere that Pantera spent a season in the South of France recording an album with Parsons hanging around as a babysitter/dealer for the band and that's where their sound really changed.

Song request. Zappa's Watermelon in Easter Grass. Just watched the documentary Zappa. You might check it out. I've always liked his work, though I've only a few of this recordings. Weasels Ripped My Flesh found me when I was young and I now can blame FZ for my current predicament. I can understand the critics who complain that his stuff is a bit cold (though it's also really funny). But it sometimes feels like he's working out a composition problem and you can listen if you want ... or not. But the closer on the video, Watermelon in Easter Grass, I can't get out of my head. There are live and studio versions –all interesting. Zappa's Maggot Brain.

Lovely. You're on the bridge pickup but it doesn't sound harsh or ice-picky, do you have the tone knob rolled back at all, or is it just a nice sweet pickup...?

Talk about kismet. An old song I've always loved and used to play popped into my had last week: the cover by The Flying Burrito Brothers of the Merle Haggard chestnut "White Line Fever." What are the chances a band from my youth would be front and center from two different angles all these years later? Hope to learn your Sin City arrangement to help me add some fills to my own take on Haggard's great song...Thanks!

Treden Wagoner

This was fantastic! I am going to spend a few weeks with this.

hugh hales-tooke

No shredding for me thank you. Keep doing this. Great video!

This is a fantastic lesson. It's so tasteful and so widely applicable. It's not just a lesson about a particular song, or even country, more widely about that, it the perfect song to illustrate how to embellish a strictly I IV V song.

BooFro

Great Job as usual. Have you got room for one more Gram Parsons tune? I know you've done quite a few lately, but I would be in 7th heaven if I could ever learn to properly play the licks in Gram Parsons' Ooh Las Vegas. https://youtu.be/kZ1X1lBTn2g?si=KutaXNf1pNoaa4yM If you don't have a place for this great song in your weekly tutorials, I would gladly commission you for a private lesson someday (if you ever start to offer such sessions again...)! BTW heading to Sin City this Summer. Maybe I'll busk it on a corner outside Vegas' "Cowtown Guitars" just to see what happens!

El Scotto

I'm so far off being able to play this, it makes me cry

CC

I’m a bit behind on lessons, this was quite the pleasant surprise. Thanks so much.

Hi. Is anyone having issues printing off the sheet music for this or is it just me? Bit of a technophobe so probably something I doing wrong 😬

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Brian, it should just be a question of clicking on the PDF attachment under the post, which on a desktop computer will save it to your downloads folder. You can then open it up and print. On a phone, the PDF opens straight away and you can print from there. If you're still struggling, let me know and I'll try and help further!

Al

Thanks for this lesson. I've had fun with it the last couple days. Can anyone point me to the backtrack MP3 file and if its been posted yet?

Al

Thanks Adrian! I'm new here and getting used to how things are arranged. Al
