Hi all! This week I'm looking at one of the greatest ever punk songs, though it's a track which isn't anywhere near as well known as it should be. There don't seem be many proper tutorials for this on YouTube so I thought I should probably have a go. It's straightforward enough to play so I've kept this video concise. But there are a few nice details in there - there tuning and the use of open stings - which it would be easy to miss.

Hope you enjoy it - everything is tabbed out below. There are a few ways I could have written this one out, but I decided to tab it at the 5th fret in the key of A. To play along to the original recording you have a couple of options - either tune up a whole step - which is probably how it was done on the record - or play every thing 2 frets higher (also using a capo if you want to get those open string notes in there).

Speak next week,

Adrian

oh yes! I love this! and it's my skill level !

Jared

Thanks! I love the Saints. Any chance of a backing track in A?

Mike Williams

Didn’t they also do This Perfect Day..?

Tony Brown

They did, it is on their Eternally Yours album 1978. Another of many great songs they put out.

Thanks Adrian, I have seen Ed play many times over the past few years. Can't wait to try this one. Watching the original video for this, I love the energy Ed puts in.

Thanks so so much Adrian. I grew up and spent most of my life in Brisbane Australia and used to go to parties at "Club 76 ", the house the Saints lived/rehearsed/played in before they left Brisbane. It was loud and all a bit of a late night/early morning haze. They inspired so many of us to form or join Bands with a DIY ethos of write your own songs. I was so lucky to have been around during this time and was one of the crowd that saw them Live back then. I remember the night a friend of the band ran into the local Pub waving the first Fatal Records Single I'm Stranded/No Time and yelling they did it. l still have my copy. I got to admit while "I'm Stranded" got all the Music Media attention I preferred the "B" side No Time. Check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmQ2FH90CHg Latest "Saints" news, is that Ed Kuepper has put together a Band to do a "Saints 73-78" Australian Tour November 13th-30th 2024. Alongside Ed will be, fellow Saint Ivor Hay drummer from the single and all three Albums, Mick Harvey (yes that Mick Harvey) on Guitar, Peter Oxley, "The Sunnyboys" Bass player and Mark Arm from Mudhoney on Vocals. Sadly i can't make it. Cheers Pete

Amazing, thanks for this! Babylon’s Burning by the Ruts would be a nice surprise one day in the future.

Angus Kingston

Thank you. I am seeing The Saints ( '73-'78) this week in Adelaide as they start the Australian tour. It's with original members Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay along with Mark Arm on vocals, Mick Harvey (Bad Seeds), Peter Oxley (The Sunnyboys). I'll let you know what position Ed plays it in. A few months ago Ed Kuepper offered he 'old' pedals for sale on his social media including the distortion pedal used on I'm Stranded. Amazing.

There is an article in the uk press in The Guardian online about their comeback.

Angus Kingston

I can confirm seeing them last night that Ed uses a capo at the second fret and plays it on the fifth and seventh frets as Adrian deduced. Good show. Loud! Ed played his SG with Bigsby with a Marshall JCM.

Jeffrey Cereghino

Thanks for turning me on to Saints. what fun band and great punk song

anyonecanplayguitar

Amazing thanks for the info Angus. Jealous you got to see them, what a great lineup of fabulous musicians!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Pete. Yes, I did Babylon's Burning a while back - brilliant track. If you search the posts it should be there.

anyonecanplayguitar

Wow, brilliant story Pete, thanks for sharing. By all accounts the recent gigs have been awesome. Really hope they decide to come to the UK at some point!

Thanks Jared. Unfortunately I didn't make backing track for this one. Maybe there are some available online? Otherwise you might be able to use some kind of app to change the key of the original to enable you to play along.

Peter Healy

Cheers Adrian. That's what I heard about the current Tour as well. I just saw a short clip of them at the first show and they did sound great. Apparently Ed was on fire. Back to my own playing. Stay Safe

Thank you. I found in the archives from a couple of years ago, which is before I started learning. It’s a good finger workout for a beginner.

Medium Al

Can't believe you found and covered this gem ([I'm] Stranded)! As an Ozzie, I feel honoured that you gave it the attention it deserves. As history has shown it is now, both seismic and yet underrated - a rare beast indeed. Thank you for your brilliant teachings.

Pete Nothing

My guitar teacher a known punk rocker of note liked your tab when we went through it yesterday.
