Unbelievably I think this is the first time I've properly tackled any Clapton on my channel. Hideaway was originally a Freddie King tune, but in this video I'm looking at Clapton's take on the tune from the 1969 John Mayall/Bluesbreakers 'Beano' album, which is probably my favourite Clapton record.

The approach I take in the video is to go through the main riffs and signature parts in a bit of detail, and then skim through some of my highlights from Clapton's soloing. There's loads of great stuff to dig into here - feel free to learn everything or maybe just a lick to two.

Tab and backing can be found below. It's an epic tune to transcribe and tab out. I've done my best with it and hope that the tab is broadly accurate, but I'm sure that were I to spend a bit more time on it I'd tweak a few things here and there.

Hope you enjoy it.

Speak next week,

Adrian

I bought the album in the 1960s not knowing what to expect. It’s still one of the first albums I play thank you so much for your thoughtful interpretation.

Bryan S

Excellent! From one of my favourite albums. I've learnt bits of this tune over the years. This will spur me on to learn more.

Derek Roczen

I would absolutey love something by Mick Taylor, like the Outro Solo of Sway for example. Thank you for your great work..

KEITH MCMILLAN

I'm looking forward to this one alot thanks Adrian. I tried once by dropping the needle on poor record dozens of times whilst slowing the turntable speed. Found it the easiest to learn on the album. Anyone want to by a perforated Beano?

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha yes I remember well how hard it was to learn things before computers and the internet. I used to use a 4 track cassette machine to slow things down.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Derek. Great suggestion, would love to look at some Mick Taylor in the future.

Mark

I love the confession. Don’t put yourself down lad. Your a star

Dave Knowles

More Clapton blues! Clapton is God afterall.

Chris Sehnert

Thank You, Adrian!.....I love this content....can't get enough classic blues......longtime subscriber / fan of yours....I would request some Elmo James (take your pick ...it's all great!)....thanks again...keep up the good work....I've learned loads and loads from your efforts!

Steven Romalewski

This was a terrific video/tutorial. Inspired me to reup my Patreon subscription. Thanks!

Stefano Biondo

Freddy King put in a Peter Gunn break.

NB

Brilliant lesson Adrian - really wonderful to have all these insights. Greatly appreciate all the effort you put into these breakdowns - would love more blues for sure!!! Cheers

Brendan Tindall

Hey Adrian Random question, I remember years ago you had a version of cocaine blues on YouTube, I can’t find it, is it still up Thanks Brendan

rbd

Great lesson, epic tab. Thanks Adrian! Maybe an odd gear question: is that a drum throne you're sitting on in the video? I could really use a good chair recommendation.

Fabio Punk

one of the songs I tried to learn on my own years ago ... much too difficult for me at that time. This is a good chance to try again - thanks Adrian!

Jacques Martin

Brillant as always ! Thank you, Adrian, for sharing these jewels !

Christopher Delaney

Fantastic lesson full of great ideas that can be reused in other songs. A Mick Taylor lesson would be awesome. His playing on live versions of Gimme Shelter and Sympathy for the Devil is staggering!

Jerry Goldberg

Adrian, how do you use the UA Ox box? Are we hearing it in your videos?

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Jerry. I'm definitely using it in this video. There are a few ways to use it. I generally just put it between the amp and speaker to attenuate the volume slightly, then record the amp with mics on the cabinet as normal. I'll often do this with my Marshall as it's a pretty loud amp. Less often with my Fenders as I usually run those clean and use pedals for drive sounds. It's a way of pushing the amp hard to get the desired tone without massive volume which is a lot more practical in my little studio. There's also an option to record directly out through the Ox box bypassing the speaker entirely which I occasionally do.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Chris! Yes, excellent Mick Taylor suggestions, will see what I can do!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, definitely - other than some of the flashier soloing bits, a lot of this tune is quite approachable. Just work on it in sections and take you time!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks! Yes, it is a drum throne. Initially I got it for drumming but it was so comfortable that I ended up using it in my videos. It probably looks better on screen too than my old wooden chair. It's a red Roc n Soc throne. Very comfortable and encourages good posture too which is important if you're putting a lot of practice time in.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I think that was a long way back before I started my own channel and decided to test the YouTube waters with a few videos. I'm honestly not sure if it's still out there. I'll have to see if I can find it!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, love to do some more Peter Green. I'm getting a video unavailable message when I click on the link, what's the track?

anyonecanplayguitar

Yeah! This is great. Will definitely consider looking at it. Thanks Eric.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes indeed! Enjoyed putting this video together so may well do some more EC soon.

anyonecanplayguitar

haha cheers Mark, yes I think maybe it's a British thing that I'm sometimes heavy on the self-deprecation!

David Bullivant

Sorry about that ! It’s “Drifting” from “The Original Fleetwood Mac” Album.

hugh hales-tooke

This lesson is so widely applicable and there's so much in it. It will become one of your lessons that forms a permanent part of my practice routine. I really appreciate the vast amount amount of timer you must put in. Slightly different tack here - how about a patreon only video where you keep the camera rolling where you are setting up and working at getting the sound? Perhaps also when you are listening to something and figuring out how to transcribe it? Do you have a lot of formal music education? Do you use anything that helps you notate the music?

John Grefenstette

Hi Adrian, what software do you use to create the score/tabs?

Iain G

I would think it's Guitar Pro 8.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, that's right. GP8 which I think is the latest version. There are a few options out there for creating tabs etc. but for me this is the most intuitive and user friendly.
