This week, a classic from one of the greatest songwriters of our time, Nick Lowe. I take you through a simple acoustic version of the song, and also show you a twangy instrumental take on it, in the style of NL's backing band Los Straitjackets.

Tab and backing track can be found below. There's a full tab of the Los Straijackets version, and also a chord/lyric chart (loosely based on the Costello and Brinsley Schwarz recordings) for those of you who want to strum and sing.

Lots of options here, so I'll leave it up to you how you approach playing this great tune. Hope you enjoy it.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Hi Adrian - how about some more Los Straitjackets - typically lots of triads and double stops,,,,and of course Surf!!!

Luca Solari

yeeeh, finally something I can play!

William Langford

Great job! Love the jackets! Surfer joe also has some great retro surf songs that I like to hear you cover

Gary Johnson

Brilliant choice! Thank you for this 🙂

Tom Davis

I'm a longtime fan of Los Straitjackets and Raybeats. "Calhoun Surf" is a great entry point to their catalog.

Mark Reid

Love this!! Surf instrumentals are my current style to learn.

Jeff

This is great! Thank you. Much of the material you present is above my skill level, but I think I'll enjoy learning this instrumental version.

Peter Healy

Hi Adrian, great lesson. This is my actual Favourite song. I love every version, from this one and Nick's original to the many other takes through to Elvis Costello and the Attractions Rocker. Thank you so much. Pete

Brilliant lesson Adrian - I am so looking forward to getting this under my fingers. What a beautiful melody - you just can't help but keep on humming it! I love the instrumental chord-melody options for songs like this - particularly for those of us who don't have the vocal capability to do such a song justice with our singing (unlike yourself Adrian)! Cheers

Thanks Adrian! My college band played only two covers, and this was one of them: a little faster and punkier even than the Elvis Costello cover, and still the only song I've ever taken the solo on in front of an audience. As I slow down (30 years on!) and learn to play with more intention, the surf-inflected version seems a good next step. You always choose the best lesson material!

Eric

Oh man, Adrian. Thank you so much. Probably my favorite song of all time, by anyone. Love this version.

Scott Myers

Calhoun Surf is a classic Danny Amis tune, but I would love to see Adrian breakdown other Raybeats songs. Jody Harris is one of the most underrated guitar players of the last 40 years.

Ignatz Maus

PLEASE! Please bring on the full solo instrumental version! I was a little puzzled at the email revealing the song choice. I am a huge fan of the Costello version but all it brought to mind was Pete and Bruce's thundering rhythm section and EC's solo. Forgot about Lowe's live version.

Hey Adrian, wondering if you'll be doing another full course on your website anytime soon?

Just what I was looking for after a 6 month layoff. I just noticed a dent in your Jazzmaster face plate.
