Hi all! Let's go jazz this week. I wanted to look at one of the first jazz solos I ever learned note for note. At the time, I found it hugely beneficial to my playing and understanding of jazz. It's an approachable, perfectly-formed piece which contains many of the key elements of a good jazz solo.

There's no backing track to this one, but I have written out a simple rhythm part in the tab below, so it shouldn't be too hard to put together a quick backing of your own if you want to give the solo a bit of context.

Hope you enjoy it. I'm actually going to be away next week. I'm currently on a trip to the US and will spending be Thanksgiving with some friends. Normal service resumes the following week. And pretty soon Christmas will be upon us once again - Xmas Special lesson suggestions anyone?!

And if you want more Charlie Christian, I recommend checking out my guide to his guitar style, and also a lesson I did on his slightly more advanced solo, Rose Room. Both videos can be found here if you search on the homepage or the library section.

Speak soon,

Adrian

A long long time ago whilst learning how to play some Ventures tunes, a family friend had asked if I knew Charle Christian. After having said no I was quickly greeted with a cuff to the back of the head. It was the best music lesson I could have hoped for. Good for you Adrian for spreading the gospel.

Nice. Really NICE! Feeling jazzy now. Neck pick-up permanently engaged. Thanks! For an Xmas special idea, would love to see you take on 'I Believe in Father Christmas' (Greg Lake)

For Christmas, a more recent one I like is Christmas is going to the dogs by the Eels.

I hope you enjoy your visit to our insane country. If you ever make it to Southern California, we have a spare room and a spare Tele . . .

Thank you Adrian. Another great lesson. Enjoy the holidays.

NB

Really appreciate these jazz lessons Adrian - how about a jazzy Christmas number.

Yes, I've done a couple of jazzy Christmas things before, always works well!

Haha, yes having fun here. I'm on the East coast, but would love to make it to Southern California at some point, might have to take you up on your kind offer!

Thank-you! Yes, the Greg Lake song is a classic. Might be an interesting challenge to come up with a guitar arrangement of that.

anyonecanplayguitar

haha! Yes, CC is definitely an important part of anyone's guitar education.

Another great lesson. I have spent ages with your Rose Room lesson from years ago. Great to have another CC lesson. This tune sounds so rockabilly to me.

Alex

Thanks, Adrian, for reminding us how important CC is for us who want to understand jazz— he is foundational in that he straddles swing and bebop.

Yes I loved the 2019 "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" ... anything like that is always a winner!
