Today a slightly fiendish stretching exercise. This is a really good way of developing your reach on the fretboard, and would also serve as a good warm up exercise. Just take it gently with this one, I don't want any injuries! Tab can be found below.

Good luck, and see you tomorrow.

Robert

Loving these challenges! You've given me a really good structure to practice for once!

Martin

Uhh, this one's definitely out of my comfort zone ...

Iain G

This one is beyond me! Can't do the stretch between 2nd/3rd fingers and 3rd/4th. Must be old age!

NB

Yep - nup - not keen on this one. I’ll definitely need to work up to this exercise!!!!

Mick Marston

yep, I suck at this, my little finger doesn't want to know. What I have learnt these last 10 days is that I'm technically very poor...;–P

hugh hales-tooke

Doing an exercise like this, I have to work to make sure that I stay upright keep breathing and not go into a defensive crouch that twists up my back horribly. I have only recently discovered that good posture is as important as good form on the neck. Watching your fingers as you do this kind of exercise makes it even worse, which is a big argument for mastering it in one position before moving down the neck so that you don't feel like you have to look.

Charles Cluck

I think I have a ukulele around here somewhere - I'll start with that.

Carl Bouthillette

I’m going to have to pace myself and get some of those pedicure spacers to help!

Charles Cluck

Yeah, just ten days in, and I've got a year's worth of work to do.

Tim Foley

Love it! Much better than adding by it to the Spider exercise which is too much stretching.

Brian West

Well I have to admit defeat with this one. In my mid seventies and some of my finger joints are not as supple and as straight as they used to be so I will just do what I can on the spiders etc and try to keep relaxed. Looking forward to Day 10 and onwards.

Scott

Be great to have a thumb ( over the top ) stretching up and down the neck exercise too!

Luca Solari

... just what I cannot do with my short fingers... but Adrian has incredibly LONG fingers... :o)

Peter Healy

Day 10 Hey Adrian, like a few others I can't do this. My small hands and short fat 68 year old fingers can't even reach from the 12th to 11th frets, lol. This is not new in my experience, it's a physical limitation I have. I can't even play with the thumb over the top technique. I just adapt my playing to make the most of the things I can do.. See you all tomorrow. Cheers Pete

Robert Bachmeier

I once paid an online instructor to make me a personal video to help me stretch my fingers on the fretboard, mainly because I wanted to learn rockabilly and I could not stretch 5 frets to play a basic rockabilly rhythm. I ended up finding a way to invert the notes in a playable position. I'm definitely going to have to work on this one, but even if the stretching is too difficult on the lower end of the fretboard, it's a great exercise to work on fingering technique to make each note sound clear. Thanks Adrian!

Lawrence Grasty

"slightly fiendish" (looks for thoughtful emoji). Great series

Steve Crockett

gah! my pinky just doesn't bend that way (yet!) LOL!

Jost

The file is corrupted, can’t be opened. Can you upload it again?

Mark Kelly

Ow Try in reverse even harder

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Jost. I just checked and both the PDF and .gp file are opening fine for me. what's happening when you try to open them? Maybe try and other device or web browser?

Jost

Thank you Adrian! All the other attachments work just fine, but this one I cannot open. Strange :-/

The interesting thing about this one is that, just by revisiting it a few times for a couple of minutes at a time over the last two or three days, I have gone from it seeming impossible to being able to do the first few frets (down from 12th). I have also been practising Mr Spock's 'Live long and prosper' hand sign (when away from my guitar) as I realised, from this exercise, that I was very poor at separating my middle and ring finger. 🖖 This series has been really good for me, thanks Adrian! I am beginning to struggle a bit to keep up though.

Tony O'Malley

Mmm loving these, but this is one I can't imagine achieving. I'll come back to it.
