I'm trying to cover as many different techniques as I can in this series, and something I've not yet looked at is sweep picking. This is a somewhat tricky technique, and not something I would ever claim to have mastered myself, but this is a great exercise to get you started.

Have fun, and see you tomorrow.

Yep … never really tried sweep picking so this will be an adventure - thanks for such a comprehensive compilation of exercises Adrian.

My favorite lesson so far - and no shredder am I. This was completely new to me as an idea and I really like the sound of it. As you point out, it's used in Gypsy Jazz . I love the way Django uses it and never twigged that this is what he was doing. Most important, I think I'll try to incorporate it into my playing - both rhythm and soloing. You have already inspired me to make more use of arpeggios and triads as the basis for soloing and this is obviously an addition to that approach. Terrific. Thank you!

Every once in awhile I’ll drop in a little sweep instead of alternate picking my way across the fretboard but I always feel a bit guilty. Thanks for sorta legitimizing my laziness. I’ll work on the muting though, for sure.

This is something I've been working on. It's been a lot of years since Jerry C first introduced his rock version of Canon in D, basically Canon Rock. There are a lot of YouTube hotshots strutting their stuff with that one. I'm learning it now, years later. There are some vicious sweep picking parts as well as tapping, etc. It's quite a wicked song to learn as it's very long and I really have to memorize it. There's too much flying around the fretboard for me to be reading the tabs as I play. I don't like to stare at the fretboard, but at first, this is one I need to watch my fretting hand with. The trick for me with rapid sweep picking is to minimize the fretting finger movement. It's very difficult to move the fingers while sweeping the strings quickly and keep everything in sync. It's taking some work. I'm just not that good but it sure is fun to work on it. These old fingers are not happy with my enthusiasm for stuff that's out of my league.

Day 24 Into the unknown here. This is where my lack of speed in my fretting hand lets me down. I suppose this exercise will help on that front. Cheers Pete
