Happy New Year all! It's Day 1 of this year's challenge and we're kicking things off with a classic scale sequence exercise - great for alternate picking accuracy, picking hand strength and overall hand synchronisation. If you've never done anything like this before, remember to take it slowly, perhaps working on it one bar at a time until you're ready to piece together the whole exercise. Tab can be found below. At the end of the series I will put all of the tabs together in a single PDF file. Have fun with it. See you tomorrow for Day 2!

Happy New Year! This is a great way to warm up. Thanks!

Christopher Delaney

I have just been through this and found that I could play it more smoothly and quickly if I had less of my pick exposed. Pick angle and minor adjustments to how I'm holding it makes a big difference. More efficient pick movement seems to help. Is that something to work on too?

Phil Atkin

2 dots on fret 9 - TERRIBLE guitar choice, visually :)

Dan Domaingue

it took a while to get my head around the pattern, but once I did it was ok. Bit of a stretch on E and A strings but that's part of it I guess. Looking forward to tomorrow :)

Tom Brunelle

Good stuff. You demonstrate on an acoustic. Is that your recommendation? Easier (for me) to start on my Tele and then to my acoustic.

Hari Raghavan

Thanks for this! I don't use a pick (so no up-down practice), but still find this fun and challenging and helpful

NB

More tortoise than hare on this for me at this point. But all good... once the E and A string stretch improves.

Peter Healy

Ha Ha Ha, I missed the 3 note per string statement and started doing C Major position 1, then the two dots only confused me more. So I stopped, went and downloaded the Tab and rewatched the vid twice and it made all sense. Great exercise but I think it will be one exercise per week, and that's ok with me. Cheers Pete

Happy New Year! It would help to have the entire pattern mapped out on 1 page for this C Scale Exercise.

Happy New Year John! You mean the basic scale pattern? The exercise itself should already be on a single page on the PDF.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, if you pay with your fingers this exercise can still be adapted and will still be valuable!

anyonecanplayguitar

Either is fine. For this series I'm using a mixture of acoustic and electric. But his is definitely a bit harder on an acoustic for me as well!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes these kind of patterns can take a while to click, but once it's there it quickly becomes automatic.

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha yes, I think this is a Martin thing, no idea why the markers are laid out like that. I'm looking at the dots on the side of the fretboard where there is a double dot at the 12th fret.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, everything you mention plays a part. There are so many small adjustments you can make. There's no one completely correct way as different players have found different solutions to fast, accurate picking. But certainly using the tip of the pick and keeping the down up movement to a minimum is very helpful.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, it's a bit of a stretch on the low E and A but stick with it and it gets easier.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes doing this exercise with a CAGED C major shape is possible but a lot harder. Of course it's absolutely fine to take as much time as you need with each of these exercises.

Steve Brodie

Really pleased your doing this again this year – thank you! I find the up stroke on the low F then down stroke on the low E a bit tricky and unnatural, I want to go the other way around. Trying to be disciplined about it though and playing it (very) slowly. 😆 Happy new year.

John B

I meant the visual map diagram. So I first learned this pattern using the CAGED "E" Shape. This 3 notes per string you have here seems easier to visualize. I've been "fretting" (no pun intended) over what's the better system to memorize the major scale shapes across the entire fretboard.

Erwin JImenez

Thanks for the exercises, good to start the year, the first, will take me a 2 0r 3 days to get done, will take my time, good for warm up and get speed, thanks, happy new year

Julian

For me this exercise is a stretching exercise every bit as much as it is about technique and precision, especially on the lower strings. Anyway, it's a good workout.
