I've been meaning to take a look at this one for years and I'm very glad to have finally made the video. This is of course an all-time classic. And on the whole it's a quite beginner-friendly tune (though the strumming pattern might take a little bit of work).

Tab and backing can be found below. (The backing is just verse and chorus X2, no bridge).

A few of you have mentioned the intro on the Rock n Roll Animal recording. I did talk about that in a video I made last year on harmony guitar parts. Check that out here, if you've not seen it - https://www.patreon.com/posts/guitarmony-126942839

Hope you enjoy the video.

Great job Adrian! There is also. Live version with a fantastic into by Steve Hunter on Rock N Roll Animal. We used to crank this song before lacrosse games. Please consider doing Hunter’s intro. It is a classic in fact it is in the same class and statue to of the classic intro to the live version of celluloid heroes by The Kinks. Please consider doing celluloid heroes and the famous live intro. Thanks, Adrian and thanks for all the work you do.

Don’t know why my message showed up twice

Axe-llent Adrian - I was just looking for a tutorial on this a few weeks ago! Thanks

Mick Marston

Love this – what do you think of the (allegedly) added on noodly intro and can we have a bonus lesson on that bit please;–)

Bruce Arthur

Cool. Was just listening to the Rock N' Roll Animal version last night.

I saw Phish play this album as their Halloween costume in 1998. Made me realize what a great album it is and I have been listening to, and playing songs from it, ever since.

James Blundell

Probably sacrilegious but The Blue Aeroplanes cover is in my opinion, an even better version!

NB

Love this … so simple but not. It is an addictive riff!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, exactly. Seems like it should be simple, but actually a bit of a challenge to get just the right feel.

anyonecanplayguitar

Totally sacrilegious, but it's certainly a great cover, I'll give you that!

anyonecanplayguitar

There's footage of this on YouTube which I just watched - brilliant! They even manage to replicate the weird introduction you hear on the original. I must give Phish a proper listen, one of those bands I've never really gotten into though they're undoubtedly great.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I thought about looking at that intro, then decided against it because I wasn't sure what was happening! It sounds like some kind of trickery manipulating the tape speed for high pitched guitars? Anyone have any ideas or info on this?

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Bruce. I did play the Rock n Roll Animal intro last year in a video I made on harmony guitar parts. Check that out if you've not seen it. I'll post a link here. And Celluloid Heroes is a great idea, I'll make a note of that and try to look at it in the future.

Great information on a great song. I was just playing this last week.

Hi Adrian, it would be great if you publish traditional guitar tabs on the chords. Not everyone can read traditional sheets

Awesome...

Phish has to be the most boring band I've ever heard. I saw them at a three day event of theirs years ago in Northern Maine. I was talked into it by a younger guitar playing friend who knew that I was an old time Dead Head. Man, all their 'songs' sounded the same and didn't really contain any worthwhile lyrics. I paid $175.00 for three days of torture. At least they could have invited other bands to break the endless noodling. My wife played oboe with the Plattsburgh Symphony Orchestra at their first big show in '98 at the closed Airbase in Plattsburgh and she thought they were very mediocre and couldn't figure out what all the hoopla was about. We heard all about them having lived a few miles outside of Burlington VT where they started out. Hey, don't waste too much time trying to figure them out as all their stuff sounds alike. Good luck !

I would love a lesson on the Intro to Sweet Jane. I think it is a sleeper that not enough people know of.
