Hi all,

Today we're looking at I'd Rather Go Blind, originally performed by by Etta James, and an all time great soul/blues track. For this video I’m taking my inspiration from the 1972 Rod Stewart recording which features guitar work from Ronnie Wood, whose playing on this tune is a masterclass in tasteful, supportive rhythm guitar.

It's a long video, and I get into lots of interesting topics - some simple rhythm, guitar approaches, adding connecting notes between chord changes, double stop fills using 4ths, 5ths and 6ths, and  I also discuss how are you might solo over these chord changes.

This is a really fun tune to play, whether as a rhythm guitarist or a lead player. Hope you enjoy it. The backing track can be found below, along with my tab which is a transcription of exactly what I played at the start of the video.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Adrian

Just in time! I have to back up a female singer in this number Tuesday night. I’ve been trying to figure out how to flesh it out as I’m the only guitar (with bass and drums). Very useful ideas here — thank you!

What can I say? Right up my street! Thanks a lot, Adrian. That's the next week or so of my life taken up!

Aldo Ferrari

Absolute classic, Thank you for your take on this song

How did your country gig go, Adrian?

Thank you for this great lesson. Another sixties great you haven’t looked at is Pete Townsend. His solos on ‘Can’t Explain’ are really favorites. His Rhythm playing on ‘The Good’s Gone’ as well as the solo is also terrific a and very much his own personal approach to the guitar (informed by Mickey Baker I believe).

Jim Moore

Great lesson. Learned a lot.

Love this one Adrian. Really useful information. Looking forward to getting this one into my play-list! Cheers

man oh man this a great way to start my weekend , blessings and thank you! I love Etta James version and this is great song.

In this and the previous video, you included ideas the lead guitar player can use behind the vocalist. These are great suggestions. In my experience, the lead guitar player too often plays the rhythm part unless there is a specific guitar solo.

Erwin JImenez

Excellent lesson and song, thanks.

Epi

Love this song, thank-you. Man that pedal sounds good.

Doc Vinegar

I particularly like this lesson! Thanks Adrian

Thanks Adrian. A masterclass of what can be down with just two chords.

John Weatherford

Adrian , as someone who’s been playing guitar for 30 yrs just a home learning songs from YT and tab apps love Ronnie woods style but there’s hardly any faces tab out there . Recently learnt ‘stay with me’ and my faces all time favourite ‘Flying’ would love to see some more faces slow stuff like this . I think this lesson may , just may make me want to improvise and change habit of 30 yrs and 170 songs learnt can’t promise as just like learning songs I love ,

Adrian sorry not great on theory or improvisation I’ve played the album version and can’t hear solo so have you just added that to play out the song ?

Paul Blagbrough

This is a fantastic version that I'd never hear before but really like.

Paul Brown

Not heard this before Adrian but really enjoyed it. You make it look effortlessly easy. Ive been practicing it for a couple of weeks now and its starting to come together. Lots of subtlety in there with the dynamics of playing the chords/notes. Thanks as always for the inspiration you provide.
