OK, so the title's a bit of an exaggeration, but really not by much. For a recent series of gigs I had to learn a whole load of country tunes (the majority of which were completely unfamiliar to me) at very short notice.

This video details my process when confronted with a massive amount of new material that I need to get to grips with very quickly. I talk about how I figure out chord progressions, write charts for tunes, hear the harmony, learn arrangements, and work out specific licks and solos.

Hopefully this stuff will be useful to anyone who needs to learn new music, whether you're playing casually with friends or in a live gig situation. Oh, and keep watching til the end if you want to learn to play Achy Breaky Heart.

For those of you who are interested I'm attaching a few Nashville numbers style charts below. Maybe a full video on the Nashville numbers system would be a good idea?

Tuscany Workshops Update

In other news, I’m really excited to be returning to Tuscany in May for another round of workshops. It’s going to be so great to get out of the studio and do some in person teaching and jamming at such an incredible location. The playlist of tunes we'll be working with is finalised and it's a killer section of blues, punk, surf and indie.

It’s nearly sold out, but there are a couple of extra spots still available. Dates are May 10-16, or May 17-23. (The original workshop post can be found here.) Please message myself or Richard - PBworkshops@mail.com - if you’re interested and would like more information.

I need to learn 30 songs in one day

For a recent series of gigs I needed to learn a whole bunch of songs at very short notice. In this video I talk about various strategies for getting to grips with new tunes - figuring out the chords, hearing the harmony, memorising the arrangements, and learning specific parts. This stuff is essential for anyone playing in a band or with other people. Fascinating, Adrian. A great insight to the way your mind works!

Gutbucket

It takes me 30 days to learn one song.

This is a great, very helpful lesson. I think you could at least one more on the same lines - working on a big batch of songs - that was devoted to how you might quickly work out guitar fills based around arpeggios, triads and 6ths - and even a third video about quickly developing solo ideas or talking about your guidelines for improvising a solo. You touch on these things in this one, but there’s a lot more you could offer around the same challenge. Good luck with the gig!

Yes - A video on the Nashville number system please. I would be very interested in your approach to that.

This is great, thank you Adrian. Hope the gig goes well.

Thanks Adrian - this was helpful to see your process.

Thanks! The gig actually already happened. I survived, and it was great fun!

Haha. No shame there though. Sometimes you just need to take your time if you want to really get to know a song thoroughly. To be honest I was winging it somewhat with quite a few of these tunes!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes I think it’d be an interesting video to make. I’ll see what I can do later in the year.

Yes some great ideas there Hugh, thanks! The gig actually already happened. Was really fun!

Is there some Utube vids where we can see you playing ?

Love your tutorials! After a nearly 35 year break (yep, 35 years), your lessons have really helped me get back into guitar again. Is there any chance you could have a look at Blondie's 'I Know But I Don't Know'? I can handle the basics of the riff and chords but Chris Stein's solo in the middle is driving me nuts! Again, thanks for the great tutorials. Kenny

Thank you very much. You mentioned the importance of ear training. Can you recommend a method? Or maybe even make a video about it? I haven't found one on your channel.

Speaking of learning songs.... would you consider putting out a lesson on The Byrds "My Back Pages?"
