Happy New Year patrons! Hope you all had a good break. I'm kicking off 2019 with a nice bit blues fingerstyle - the great Stack O'Lee as played by Mississippi John Hurt. Link to vid, and tab below.

Today's my first day back in the studio after Xmas. After I've caught up on ton of emails and admin I'm going to get down to planning some new lessons and videos. I hope there's going to be plenty to interest you here over the coming year. As usual, if you have any thoughts or suggestions about what you'd like to see, do let me know.

Speak soon,

Adrian

This is the best version...although not guitar related. I've requested it be played at my Funeral. If it aint?...I aint urning up.

Even cranky old John Fahey loved Mississippi John

It'd been a while since I listened to MJH, so I broke out the Avalon Blues recording which includes this song. What beautiful music.

Jared

Adrian really nice selection here. I'm a huge MJH fan but have never played finger style. Makes me feel like I'm learning guitar all over again :-( My fingers just don't want to cooperate.

Hi Jared, pleased to have you here, thanks for signing up! Yes, I remember when I first tried fingerstyle I found developing independence between the thumb and fingers really hard. Take it slow and put the time in and it will happen. I'm thinking about doing a few fingertyle basics lessons at some point this year, so look out for those. - Adrian.

Hi Adrian! Big time finger style blues fan here and totally loving this video. Blues and Bluegrass are huge here in North Carolina, so I was wondering if you'd ever learned any Doc Watson?

Chris Kueny

Jared, in case it's useful, I once stumbled across a lesson on Travis picking by jerrysguitarbar.com that gave me my first handle on fingerstyle. He does mostly acoustic lessons (most paid, a few free) and his John Prine lessons were a nice starting point. I haven't masted this yet, you really do need to develop some new neural pathways/muscle memory. I just started on Adrian's lesson here, and I do believe it can be done. And such a wonderful choice of song. Just being able to hear myself play the first few notes was so exciting.

Chris Kueny

(BTW, I felt OK about mentioning the the other lesson site because I don't think it competes at all with Adrian's work here. Jerry has many excellent, very clear lessons, but his focus is very different--almost all acoustic, no overlap with Adrian in choice of songs, and his disembodied voice approach makes me realize how much Adrian's personal presence brings to the lessons here.)

Jeff Sims

Hi Jared, I'm not an expert by any means, but I find that if you can get the bass part going first - similar to if you are strumming the chords, but just play the bass parts - then work on fitting the melody parts in. Everything has to work around the pulse of the bass, and once you get used to 'meeting that deadline' it will flow better for you. Plus, it isn't easy, so don't feel there is anything wrong with you, ya just gotta practice!

Yes, Chris I've come across some of the Jerry's Guitar Bar lessons - some very nice stuff there, and all very well done. And I agree with you Jeff that's it's often best to start with the bass, get that solid and gradually get the melody part fitting in on top. I have got a few PDFs that I use with my private students which cover some fingerstyle basics. I can share them here if people are interested.

Hey Brady - pleased you're enjoying the blues fingerstyle. I will try and do more later this year. Yes, Doc Watson was a master. I've attempted a few of his pieces in the past - Sitting on Top of the World I think and a couple of others. I might see if I can remember them and do a video at some point!

Jeff Sims

Anything picking related is good as far as I'm concerned. Fingerstyle, flat-picking, rockabilly Scott Moore stylee, John Prine style, you name it, if it's picking, I'm on board!

Chris Kueny

I would be interested in whatever you care to share here, Adrian! (In response to your mention of fingerstyle pdf material.)

great choice. sweet rolling fingerstyle by hurt. well done!!

Paul C

Great video and very useful tab. Thanks for this! Keep the acoustic guitar lessons coming...

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Frederick. Yes, there will definitely be more acoustic things coming up soon!

This one is tricky for me even though I’m not completely new to finger style, so offers the perfect challenge, really. Funny how it looks a lot easier than it is, but I’m sure it will click eventually like these songs usually do. Thanks as always for these great lessons - very useful to have the tab and video to avoid falling deeply into error!

Yes, I think most finger style stuff seems effortless when it's done well, but it actually takes a lot of work to get to that stage. Just stick with it!
