Great idea to set goals and plan for where we want to be a year from now, all the best to you and yours!!

Thanks Brian. All the best for 2019 to you and yours too! And good luck with your practice plan.

Does Adrian or anyone else here know if there's a way to get notifications when new messages are posted here? Thanks--if not, I will email the keepers.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I was wondering about that myself. I had assumed that when I posted or responded to a comment here that people would get notified but that doesn't always seem to happen. I'll try and find out! Also, I'm thinking about filming a Wire lesson or two tomorrow - I think you're a fan (as are some others here), so any particular songs you'd like to see?

Chris Kueny

Wire would be great! I tried before to think of good candidate songs, especially ones that would sound OK on a solitary guitar as I'm playing, but the eccentricity of their music makes that tricky. My first exposure was on a punk compilation including "Mannequin" which might be my *least* favorite Wire song. The first three albums, plus Send, plus Red Barked Tree all full of great stuff, and Silver/Lead was good too. There are the punk-y frenzied things, and heavy noise fests, and ballad-y stuff, and pop stuff. I'm like a deer in the headlights when I think about this question. Your taste, plus what seems suitable for lesson form, plus whatever anyone else might have requested.....

Chris Kueny

I sent Patreon a question about how to get email notifications of message posts.

Probably too late to make Wire suggestions now, but had a bunch of random choices flood through my mind this morning: Mercy (from Chairs Missing, very heavy song)? Advantage in Height? (they did very heavy versions of this live). Boiling Boy? A weird and interesting choice might be Kidney Bingos.... Blessed State, I Don't Understand, Please Take, Playing Harp for the Fishes....

Not too late Chris, all great suggestions, thanks! I've been doing a bit of listening today and will try and film something tomorrow. I might try and do a few short Wire lessons, as many as I have time for. I'm less familiar with their later stuff (should probably fix that) so will probably stick to the 3 classic 70s records. I'll probably do one or two of the poppier songs (maybe Mannequin, not a particular favourite for me either, but for a lot of people it's the only Wire song they'll know), I think Mercy will be great if I can figure it out, and maybe one of the more atmospheric things from 154. If all goes well I'll put one or two of the vids out next week.

Anything you come up with will be greatly appreciated and enjoyed! (Even Mannequin). My favorites tend toward the less poppy, but some of those might be either hard to do lessons on or hard for Wire newcomers to get their heads around. As far as your own listening goes: Wire went through many stages, but two absolutely essential later albums are Send (hyper-driven, overdriven frenetic noise, absolutely great), and Red Barked Tree (a more accessible but brilliant mix of hard driving and beautiful mellower stuff). These two stand with the 70s holy trinity as Wire's best five albums I think. FWIW, if I was going to try to hook a newcomer on Wire, I'd give them Chairs Missing and Red Barked Tree to try out. OK, sorry to go on so long, I'll stop now!
