Morning all. We're getting funky today with a funk rhythm exercise. It's a simple, quick workout which is easy to incorporate into you practice routine. But it does really work wonders for you feel and groove.

Here's a link to the video:

The tab is attached below. I've written it out using a single E9 shape, but feel free to use any E7/E9 type chord you like.

On the backing track there's a 2 bar drum intro. And I've looped it so you'll be able to play the whole exercise twice.

Have FUN with it!

Speak next week,

Adrian

This was useful. I've been meaning to tackle 9th chords again after being beaten down by them before, and meanwhile was needing to work more on rhythm, so this was just what the doctor ordered. Very simple (except for the bending the finger over backward part), but trying to play along well to the backing track with all the variations is a very good exercise. And although my 9th chords aren't perfect yet, I seem to have gotten ove my fear and was actually making some OK sounds today. Thank you!

Yes, think this is one of those simple, but hard to do well exercises. Well done with the 9th chords. A lot of people struggle at first with that particular grip, but it's one of those chords that is so common and useful that there's really no avoiding it!

Also this lesson made me return to your Blues series where 9ths had frustrated me before, and it all was far less intimidating now. I picked up your set of backing tracks on Bandcamp to go along with that series, again very helpful for rhythm development. I'm really appreciating all of your lessons right now; several that didn't grab me the first time I'm now returning to and finding them very helpful.

Agreed, spot on as usual Adrian. I've been neglecting practicing rythmn of late and also am not super comfortable with that particular 9th grip. And as you point out, its such a useful chord I may as well make friends with it, and this will definately help!

Thanks David. Like Shuggie Otis, but don't really know that album - will check it out this week, thanks!
