Hi everyone. This week, in celebration of the genius of Ennio Morricone, I've put together a little arrangement of one of his best known pieces - the main theme from spaghetti western The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

Here's the link: https://youtu.be/bEID_VT4GFw

Plenty of interesting things to work on here - octaves, fast picking, triads, chord melody, dynamics. Music/tab can be found below. Hope you enjoy learning it!

Speak next week,

Adrian

Hi Adrian I'm about to buy a new guitar and I want to really nail the sound of this song and although I love the sound of the Jazzmaster I really dont like how it looks I prefer the look of the old 50's guitar like Gretsches archtops etc Can you please recommend something that would get me very close to the sound but with more vintage looking guitar?

Gary Johnston

Jazzmaster launched in 1958 so not exactly modern. :) Don't get too hung up on the guitar though - anything with a vibrato bridge will get you close through a twangy amp with reverb and tremolo.

Revisiting some old lessons! nice one

Marvellous stuff Adrian, will come in handy if I ever get to busker/pub playing standard! Hope it’s not presumptuous of me, but any chance you could have a look at Cherub Rock at some point, I know it’s done in octaves, And that might be something some of your other viewers might be interested in, I’m really struggling with some of the strumming myself.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, maybe. Love the Pumpkins, and think Cherub rock would make an interesting video - will add it to the list!

Thomas Simmons

Excellent stripped down arrangement. I remember hearing this song as young child and thinking how cool it was. Funny hearing your arrangement how much it reminds me of Will Sergeant.

Sara Landeau

A nice lesson in dynamics too. I feel like that's a huge part of arch of this piece. Thank you!

Jared

Keep up the good work Adrian. Great lesson.

Chris Kueny

I'm only a little through this, but I quickly realized how much this piece depends upon feeling. It seems like it leaves all kinds of space for expressiveness. (Not sure I'm finding the right words here, but anyway....)

Chris Kueny

Great lesson! I always wonder what's coming but never would have anticipated this one. Great choice, great arrangement; it has some really nice bits for challenge, and sounds killer when done right. I got a new amp a while back and have been fiddling around trying to get it to sound right, and I think this was the first time I was hearing something out of it that made me totally forget the equipment and just love the sounds I was making (well, actually Snowblind did that on the amp's dirty channel; this was the first time that I reveled in the clean channel.)

anyonecanplayguitar

Interesting! Been listening to a bit of Will Sergeant lately, so maybe that crept in there somehow. I really must get round to doing a Bunnymen lesson soon.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I definitely tried to bring out the dynamics and expression here. With the guitar can sometimes be hard to play dynamically, particularly when you're in a band setting. But with a solo piece it seems to come a bit more easily.

Thomas Simmons

A big thumbs up for that. The guitar sounds on "Crocodiles" are bit of a mystery to me. Live back in the day I seen he played Fender Twins, but the first album sounds different like maybe it was a Roland Jazz Chorus with some kind of drive pedal to get that great sound.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I might well try looking at something of that record - the guitar work and sounds are amazing.

terence wilson

Very simply put so even I can understand the instruction. A testament on how well Adrian knows his subject!

Simon Doyle

Finally got around to checking this video out today. Thanks for sharing this Adrian. It's a very understated piece IMO and there's so much to take out of this.

Gordon Oliver

Bravo Adrian! Brilliant interpretation and arrangement. this combines massive reverb and tremolo and some tricky parts....Perhaps a lil tongue in cheek when you said that '...the only technical part...' I m enjoying the pieces of the puzzle, and overall is very challenging to this intermediate guitarist! Cheers Adrian.

anyonecanplayguitar

Cheers Gordon. Glad you enjoyed this one! Thanks very much for signing up and for your support on here.

Thanks Adrian ..enjoyed your interpretation..and a good lesson to learn
