Hello all! It's that  time of year for a goth-rock Halloween special. This has long been a favourite track of mine. We have a couple of easy barre chord riffs and lots of crazy atmospherics. There's some spooky silliness, but also some serious stuff about how to approach playing in a textural kind of way. Hope you enjoy it.

Here's the link:

And I've tabbed out the basic riffs below.

Have a great weekend. Speak next Friday,

Adrian

This was the first song of Bauhaus I heard and of course it was in a goth disco. After that I got addicted to them... so more Bauhaus? Yes please! What about "God in an alcove" or "Passion of lovers" Thanks for your excellent lessons and the always surprising music selection.

I knew Bauhaus only by name, but I'll go listen to some of their stuff. One of my greatest musical revelations in years was discovering Godspeed You! Black Emperor last year when I saw them play in San Francisco. One of those guys also played with a screwdriver. (I had considered asking you about covering something by them, but their tunes are all epic thundering drone-fests, and not easily adaptable to a single guitar. Had I asked, I was going to suggest a bit of East Hastings, which was popularized in the soundtrack to a zombie movie called 28 Days Later. That's a pretty simple but great melody, but I wasn't sure how it would hold up by itself. Regardless, if you don't know them, check them out, and by all means see them live if ever again possible. Truly epic, loud shows with haunting 16mm film images throughout.)

Yas! Thanks for covering this one.

Yes, I enjoyed rediscovering Bauhaus whilst putting this video together. God in an alcove seems like a popular choice - might well try and look at that later this year or early next.

Yes, I am aware of Godspeed... A while ago I got really into their album Lift your Skinny Fists etc...But I've not really explored any go their other stuff. Will check out East Hastings. I've heard their live shows are truly spectacular - I must try and catch them next time they come to the UK.

Another excellent choice, Adrian! And since you asked, yes more Bauhaus would be most welcome. And while we're plumbing the gloom, something (or many things) from Killing Joke would be a worthy addition.

Thank you! It’s like you’ve been reading my mind!

Great guide. But one question.. Is it possible to do this with an analog delay ped. I have the Memory Boy standard from E Harmonix. I cant seem to get the right fx.. Any tips? Maybe its time for another pedal..?

anyonecanplayguitar

The Memory Boy is a great pedal. Not too dissimilar to my Belle Epoch Deluxe, so you should be able to make it work. All delay pedals will have a slightly different character, but it's often more about how you use them. you might just need to experiment with the settings. Keep the mix and feedback quite high and play with the delay time as you're playing. Hope that helps a bit!
