Hello all,

This week, another loosely Halloween-themed video: Nosferatu Man by Slint. Again, this is a band I was planning on taking look at sooner or later anyway. This is a fascinating track, with tons of interesting things going on: drop D tuning, odd time signatures, harmonics, weird and dissonant chords. Here's the link:

If you're unfamiliar with Slint, do check out their album Spiderland, and you might also want to watch the documentary I mentioned in the video:

I'm attaching my tab below. It's a bit of a conundrum how to notate some of this stuff. I wrote the bridge riff out in 6/4, but there might well be a better way of doing it? I'll edit the transcription here if I decide to make any changes.

Have fun with it. Speak next week,

Adrian

I totally forgot about Slint. Spiderland is great, I'll have to dig that out again.

Hello Adrian. This may not be the right place to post this comment but I’m a just-joined and don’t know where to make requests. I have enjoyed your free lessons for a couple of years and learned a lot. I thought it was time to acknowledge your generosity so have dipped my toe in the Patreon business, which Ive never done before. Like you I greatly admire James Burton, and was amazed how much I learned (and still am) from that tiny little solo on Streets of Baltimore that you put out recently. My request is for you to shed some light on a couple of Jerry Garcia solos, particularly the ones on Me & Bobby McGee and Candyman. I know JG could be very variable, but he played an awful lot. I think it probably depended on what state he was in, which could be said of many of us. Its all a long time ago, I know, but I’m 72 in December so thats my excuse.

Thomas Oldenburg

Awesome, Good Morning Captain please (if you ever run out of ideas for a lesson)

Paul Shakesby

Fantastic lesson! Love me some Slint. David Pajo's been a long time favourite guitarist, his Papa M projects are well worth checking out as well (Live from a shark cage). Some really interesting tunings he uses. Along the same lines as David Pajo that would be wild to get some lessons on would be two fellow Tortoise guitarists, Doug McCombs (Brokeback) and Jeff parker. Really appreciate the broad range you dive into!

I came of age watching Slint play Tewligan’s Tavern in Louisville. Thank you Adrian, for another amazing choice, well done in figuring it out as well, sounds like the original.

Lots of requests get made here, Laurie! Welcome!

Yes. I'd not listened to it for a long time myself until this week. Still sounds fantastic!

Hi Laurie. Welcome, and thanks so much for the support on here. Requests are always very welcome - quite a high proportion of my videos come about through requests either here or in the YouTube comments. I do like a bit of Grateful Dead from time to time. And I agree, Garcia could be variable, but at his best he could be stunning. I think American Beauty is my favourite Dead album, so I might well try and take a look at the Candyman solo. I'll take a listen to the Me and Bobby McGee solo too. Is that a live recording - there seem to be several versions - which is your favourite?

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Paul. Yes, I must check out some of the David Pajo's other work as I'm not very familiar with it. Tortoise would certainly be interesting to look at too - will see what I can do.

Laurie Rousham

Ah, thanks Adrian for your reply. Yes, American Beauty has to be my favourite too, though Workingman’s Dead and the 1971 ‘Skull and Roses’ albums definitely have their moments. The version of Me and BMG that I was thinking of was not a live version, but from Skull and Roses. Quite apart from the solo, I love the little fills and licks Garcia used in the verses, particularly the first verse, and would love you to shed some light on those. And that ending lick!

Sounds great - I will check that out. I've heard the album before I think but never got into it very deeply - will take a proper listen this week.

Is the backing track available for this??
